Chapter 32 - chapter 32 The Shattered Promise

The Shadowfang cruised through the debris field of what was once the Vow's central stronghold. The stars outside gleamed coldly, indifferent to the galaxy's upheaval. Inside, silence hung heavy over the crew. Victory had come at a cost none of them were ready to face.

Iris sat alone in the observation deck, her Nexus-infused tattoos faintly glowing in the dim light. The swirling patterns on her arms pulsed rhythmically, mirroring her heartbeat. She clenched her fists, her mind replaying the final moments of the battle with Darius. The memory of his words lingered.

"You think you've won? The Nexus will devour you piece by piece until there's nothing left. Just like it did to me."

The hiss of the door broke her reverie. Arkan stepped in, his usually stern face softened by concern. "You've been sitting here for hours. The crew is worried."

"I'm fine," Iris replied without looking at him. Her voice was calm, but it carried the weight of a storm brewing beneath the surface.

"You don't look fine." Arkan walked closer, his boots echoing softly against the metal floor. "What happened back there—what you did—it saved us. You need to stop carrying this alone."

She finally turned to him, her glowing eyes meeting his. "You saw what happened. I wasn't in control. I almost—" She stopped, biting her lip. "I almost became what we fought to destroy."

Arkan placed a hand on her shoulder. "You didn't. That's what matters."

Elsewhere on the Ship

The rest of the crew gathered in the common room, their moods ranging from tense to restless. Kairo tinkered with a damaged drone, his usual smirk absent. Kyra leaned against the wall, cleaning her knives with practiced precision, while Luna sat cross-legged on the floor, her eyes closed in meditation.

"She's brooding again," Kairo muttered, breaking the silence. "Why am I not surprised?"

Kyra shot him a glare. "Give her space. She just killed a guy who turned into a god. That tends to mess with your head."

"Mess with your head?" Kairo scoffed. "She nuked an entire city block with her mind. If that's what the Nexus does when she's holding back, what happens if she lets loose?"

"She won't," Luna said softly, her voice steady. Her eyes opened, glowing faintly with the same ethereal light as Iris's. "Iris is stronger than she realizes."

"Let's hope you're right," Kyra muttered, sheathing her knife. "Because if she loses it, there won't be anyone left to stop her."

The Nexus's Whisper

Back on the observation deck, the ship's lights flickered. Iris stiffened as a familiar sensation crept over her—a cold, electric tingle running up her spine. She closed her eyes, gripping the railing tightly.

"You've tasted what I offer," the Nexus whispered, its voice a seductive blend of curiosity and malice. "Why do you resist? Together, we could reshape this galaxy."

Iris gritted her teeth. "I'm not interested in becoming your puppet."

"Puppet?" the Nexus purred. "You misunderstand. I don't control—I empower. The Vow was weak. Darius was weak. But you, Iris...you could be unstoppable."

The tattoos on her arms flared brighter, and the room's temperature seemed to drop. Arkan stepped back instinctively, his hand moving toward his weapon.

"I don't need you," Iris growled. "I can protect this galaxy without losing myself."

"Can you?" the Nexus mocked. "Or will you watch as everything you care about crumbles under the weight of your limitations?"

The whisper faded, leaving Iris trembling but resolute. She turned to Arkan, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her. "We need to keep moving. The Nexus shards are out there, and if anyone else finds them..."

Arkan nodded. "Agreed. But don't forget—you're not doing this alone."

The Mission Resumes

The Shadowfang descended into chaos as alarms blared. Luna appeared in the doorway, her expression unusually grim. "We've intercepted a distress signal. It's...different. An energy signature similar to the Nexus."

"Where?" Iris demanded, her exhaustion vanishing in an instant.

"Near the Exora Outpost," Luna replied. "But there's something else. The signal isn't just a warning—it's a message. It's calling for you."

The room fell silent as the implications sank in.

"Set a course," Iris said, her voice cutting through the tension. "We can't ignore this."

Closing Scene

As the Shadowfang roared toward its new destination, Iris stood on the bridge, staring into the swirling void of hyperspace. The Nexus's whispers had quieted, but she knew it was far from gone.

For now, there was a mission—a purpose to anchor her. But deep down, she couldn't shake the feeling that the Nexus wasn't just calling to her. It was waiting.

And whatever lay ahead, it would change everything.
