Chapter 37 - chapter 37 The Aftermath of Light

The Shadowfang floated in the stillness of space, just beyond the edge of the Vexis Nebula. The crew gathered in the ship's common area, their faces reflecting exhaustion and a shared sense of relief. Despite their victory, the air was thick with unspoken questions.

Iris sat at the table, her posture slumped. Her tattoos were dim, flickering faintly like embers that refused to die. She held a steaming cup of tea in her hands, though she hadn't taken a sip.

"Alright," Kairo began, breaking the silence. "We need to talk about what just happened back there."

Kyra raised an eyebrow, her arms crossed. "What's there to talk about? We fought the Architect, won, and pulled Iris back from the Nexus's clutches. End of story."

"Except it's not," Luna interjected, her tone sharp. "The Nexus is still out there, and it's not going to stop coming for her—or us."

"She's right," Arkan said, his voice calm but firm. "The Nexus isn't just some enemy we can defeat in a single battle. It's... something bigger, something we barely understand."

Iris sighed, setting down her untouched tea. "It's not just the Nexus," she said, her voice low. "It's me. The Architect wasn't lying when they said the Nexus and I are connected. I can feel it, even now."

"So what does that mean?" Kairo asked, leaning forward. "Are you saying you're one of them?"

"No," Iris said firmly. "But I'm not sure I'm entirely... human anymore."

A Fractured Crew

The weight of Iris's words settled over the group like a storm cloud. Kairo leaned back, running a hand through his hair.

"Great," he muttered. "So we've got a living, breathing Nexus shard on board. That's not exactly comforting."

"Kairo," Luna snapped, glaring at him. "She's our friend."

"She's also a ticking time bomb," Kairo shot back. "What happens if the Nexus decides to take over again? What happens if next time, we can't bring her back?"

"That's enough," Arkan said, his voice cutting through the tension. "Iris isn't the enemy. We wouldn't have made it this far without her."

"And we're not abandoning her now," Kyra added, her tone icy as she shot Kairo a pointed look.

Kairo raised his hands in mock surrender. "Fine. But don't say I didn't warn you when things go south."

A Glimmer of Hope

Later that night, Iris found herself alone in the ship's observation deck. The vast expanse of stars stretched out before her, a stark reminder of how small she felt in the face of everything that had happened.

Arkan entered quietly, standing beside her without saying a word. For a while, they both simply stared out at the stars.

"Do you think it's true?" Iris asked finally. "What the Architect said about me?"

Arkan glanced at her, his expression thoughtful. "I think you're more than what they said. More than what the Nexus wants you to be."

Iris let out a bitter laugh. "Easy for you to say. You're not the one with a cosmic parasite in your veins."

"No," Arkan admitted. "But I am the one who'll stand by you, no matter what."

Iris looked at him, surprised. "Why? After everything, why would you still trust me?"

"Because I've seen who you really are," Arkan said simply. "And that person is worth fighting for."

For the first time since their escape, Iris smiled—a small, fragile thing, but real.

The Nexus Stirs

Unbeknownst to the crew, the Nexus was far from dormant. Deep within the void, its energy coalesced, forming new constructs and spreading its influence across the stars. The destruction of the Forge had only angered it, and now it sought to reclaim what it had lost.

In a distant system, a lone planet glowed with Nexus energy. On its surface, shadowy figures gathered, their forms indistinct but brimming with power. At their center stood a new figure—a being more terrifying than the Architect, its body a fusion of Nexus light and living metal.

It spoke, its voice resonating across the galaxy. "Iris Veyra has defied us long enough. The time has come to bring her into the fold—or destroy her."

The Nexus's campaign of conquest had only just begun.

Preparations for War

Back on the Shadowfang, the crew was already preparing for their next move. Luna sat in the medbay, running tests on Iris's blood samples. The results were unlike anything she'd ever seen—fragments of Nexus energy intertwined with Iris's DNA, forming a unique, unstable bond.

"This isn't just a mutation," Luna murmured to herself. "It's evolution."

Kyra, meanwhile, was in the armory, sharpening her blades and testing new weapons. She had no intention of being caught off guard again.

Kairo was in the engine room, tinkering with the ship's systems. Despite his earlier skepticism, he was determined to ensure they were ready for whatever came next.

Arkan reviewed star charts in the cockpit, mapping out potential Nexus hotspots. He knew their mission was far from over, and the stakes had never been higher.

As for Iris, she stood in her quarters, staring at her reflection. Her tattoos glowed faintly, a constant reminder of the power she carried—and the danger it posed.

"I don't know if I can do this," she whispered to herself.

But deep down, she knew there was no turning back.
