Chapter 2 - Reaction Second

Reaction Second

It was like a small flicker of hope for the frog's baby when it saw Mia walking down the pebbled path, radiating a strong scent of roses.

Mia bounced down a rocky stone, only strolling along a dry, infertile path, carefully avoiding grass.

The baby frog scrambled away, having been an eye witness to the power those odorous soles, or socks, possessed.

"Prick, Prick, Prick. I will be your needle. Softly and I will plead you. Kill, still, fill, and I will free you," Mia crooned out her liked song, one her father used to make her drift into slumber at exhaustingly late nights, all worn out and cuddled up in the bed with the three of them together.

And now it was just the two of them.

"Stick, I'm sad, I'm happy, I'm tracked! Oh help me God, I'm there only, for this, and for that, I will treat, treat, treat, I will meet you. I will sink, sink, sink, sink into those pretty links..." her pouty lips dwindled into a silent, limpid hum. She had forgotten the lyrics after that.

It wasn't a surprise. She forgot most of the things. That is why she carried her father's journal in a small pouch hung low over her hips everywhere she went, tied stiffly into the belt of her gauzy gown.

Uncle Heavy was flailing his fumbling arms up and down the castle gates, trying to get rid of that irky little black speck on the rather smooth and rich gold... Oh, imperfections, they just keep bothering you, no?

Mia shivered with ideas, her left eye twitching as she threaded her way towards the untouchable gates and smuggled through the wicket gate noiselessly.

She had learnt that from her mother. Never make a sound when you are about to do something conventionally bad, though Lory had never actually said that. It was very subtle, but it was there.

And Mia was learning to lie. It was a significant phase in life - when you learned to lie crimelessly, like adults.

Adults lied more than adoloscents. They just had a giant ego they wanted to protect by accusing kids all the time, maybe not all the time.

Where do you think kids learn from?

Poor things, Mia smiled softly as she trampled intently over all the blooming lilies.

She looked up and saw some adults staring right at her, dressed in uniforms meant for servants, or slaves, neither cared.

"Hello! How is everyone's mornings going?" Pausing innocently, she took her time to look at all of them, one by one.

The adults exchanged emotionless, weary looks. One female adult, with furrowed eyebrows and tainted red lips stepped before her and shook her head faintly. "Little one, who let you in here? Who gave you permission?"

"Uncle Heavy did," Mia lied just as quickly as her mommy did when she had asked her about what the noose in the drawer by the bed was for.

"Oh, I swear, I'll get the man fired someday, for Lavi's good," a male adult standing way behind the female one muttered. "The dwarf can't even carry his own fat..." the man continued.

Mia listened intently. She was learning new words very quickly, indeed.

"That's okay, little girl. We'll punish the man for letting you in. You just go back to your mummy now, okay?"

Nodded Mia.

"... Go?"

For a moment, a brief minute, the adults froze, and went strangely stiff, as if they had died while simply standing.

"Perfect!" Mia squealed, her cherub-like face jiggling softly. "Killing the frog was a success after all."

And her pure hands slithered into the pockets of their uniforms, fishing out gold, silver coins.

"I really hope Lace is watching right now," breathed Mia, a bit enthusiastically.

And for whatever silly reason, the three souls crumbled into nothings.
