"Are you afraid?", James had asked
" I am never afraid." , Marvin had answered with a wink, trying his best not to sound weak.
It was both a lie and a truth. Marvin was indeed never afraid of anything except for the first time when he was standing in front of the goblin's cottage alongside James.
'For something this precious you need to pay a price.
Nothing can calm my hunger, not even a thousand bowls of rice.
I feed on emotions, I feed on feelings.
One of you may remember while the other should forget.
This will be the only price for the things you wish to possess.'
They stayed there for what felt like years, completely still, not being able to look each other in the eyes.
Marvin was the first one to break the silence. "You can be the one to choose." , he had said without lifting his head.
"Oh! So we do have to choose? Can't we just kill the goblin and steal the stones?", James had asked Marvin but his distant expression told Marvin that he was aware that what he was asking for was impossible.
They had to complete the task, that was the only way for them to finish their mission.
James had grazed his hand softly on Marvin's cheek, he had been shaking and his eyes were red and teary. " Please Marv, let me be selfish one last time, please let me choose first, I will be the one to remember, you can be the one to forget, it would be easier that way, please."
Marvin had nodded his head obediently as they had kissed, tongue on lips and teeth on tongue. After a few hours of them kissing and hugging eachother Marvin had made his way inside the cottage to trade with the goblin.
"I will come and find you and I will make you remember, I promise.", he could hear James shout from the outside.
Marvin shutted his eyes closed and took a deep breath, "I am ready to make the trade.", he wispered in the empty hall.
"And how would you like the conditions to be?" , replied a grumpy old voice, the goblin never showed himself to anyone and deep down Marvin was thankful for that, he had not wanted anyone to see him that broken.
"I will remember and he will forget.", Marvin let out slowly.
"Oh my, my, my, are you sure boy because your companion out there wanted the complete opposite." , the goblin had asked him with amusement.
"Yes, I am sure"
The goblin had laughed then as the cottage turned to dust and Marvin had found himself standing in utter darkness with the three shining stones in his hand.
When he had opened his eyes again, he was back at the headquarters, his brother had asked him about what went down since James didn't remember anything about the mission.
So Marvin told him and told him and told him about how everything had turned from heaven to hell for him inside that forest.
"So will you tell him, make him remember?", his brother Sebastian had asked him.
"No, I don't think so. It won't be the same, things were different when we were inside the forest but now that we are out and he isn't even aware of what went down, I don't think telling him would do us any good.", Marvin had wanted to sound brave but Sebastian always knew what was going on inside his head and worse inside his heart.
"It's alright Marvy, I got you." , Sebastian had told him with a tight hug.
And for the first time in years Marvin had cried hot tears down his brother's shoulder.
'I am sorry Jamie', was all he could think about.
