After reading about characters like this for a while, Tom made a promise to himself that no matter what happened, he would never lie to himself. He could lie to the whole world but never to himself.

Many times people would try to play a character that is simply not theirs, like wearing clothes that are bigger than you. After a while and without noticing you might adapt to these clothes by growing in size.
The idea here is that a person must be careful while choosing which mask to wear. Because without knowing, this mask might become your new face.
