Chapter 2 - A Turning Point

Hard Work

After a few years of staying with Otto, the boys were now 15. Lucian had become strong and dependable and had learned cooking. He had gotten skilled enough to survive anywhere alone. But of course, he wouldn't leave Viril's side no matter what.

Viril had also grown into a smart man with high intellect, able to talk anyone into anything. His skills had improved vastly, but so had something that Lucian didn't really like—Viril's desire for riches had grown a lot.

Lucian was sometimes concerned about him, but Viril seemed to manage just fine, and they didn't get into trouble that often. Otto had now grown older, in his 50s. But he still had stories for them, and they still harbored the same excitement for them as they did years before.

Otto's Legacy

Otto gained more fame due to his work, food, and the two orphans he nurtured. Otto's became a place known to the rich, too. Hearing about the famous Otto in town, the Minister of Information and Intelligence decided to give the place a visit.

Otto had local diplomats over, but a minister was unexpected, and he did not have any prior information of the visit. Otto, with Lucian's help, worked every step of the way.

Otto was tired from the long day and nervous, but Lucian was determined to make something special for Dorian. He poured his all into baking, and Dorian witnessed his determination firsthand.

His movements were precise, distracted by none. Even the oven's heat couldn't break his firm will. Every movement had a purpose and resolve behind it. The minister had never seen such determination.

Meanwhile, Viril kept Dorian engaged with his smooth words, never allowing him to notice the time slipping as Lucian worked.

Finally, the special cake arrived. The cake looked splendid—pearl white with purple accents and decor.

"A cake made with such determination and precision," Dorian said. "How can I possibly eat such an art?"

"We shall make you splendid cakes whenever you want, Minister," Otto said, with Lucian nodding in agreement.

Bitter Offer and A Tearful Adieu

Dorian tasted the cake and was delighted by its exquisite flavor. He even offered a slice to Otto. Otto was happy to see that the parts Lucian made were perfect.

Dorian and Otto were in a separate room, one reserved only for VIPs. Dorian offered Otto to work as his personal chef, but Otto humbly refused as he was getting older and wished to just continue with the bakery. Dorian understood and respected his wishes.

Otto said, "Sir, I may be getting up in years, but Lucian, the boy who helped me make the cake, is still young and quite good at cooking. You surely will love the taste of his food. Unlike me, he will improve over time and is good at things other than cakes, too.

"The cake you had was also partly made by him."

Dorian was impressed and wanted to have Lucian under his wing—not just because he was a good cook, but because of his determination. He asked Otto if he had no problems with him taking Lucian, as he was Otto's helping hand.

Otto assured him that he had no problem and could manage the work. He said he would be happy to see Lucian grow.

Just as the conversation was progressing, Lucian and Viril walked into the room. Otto told them to come sit with them and taste the cake they had worked hard to make.

They sat and tasted the cake. It was good, and Lucian was proud of his work. Viril was also surprised at how good it was. Otto then brought up the conversation he had with Dorian earlier.

But Lucian was hesitant, as he had years of memories with that place, Otto, and Viril. His absence would increase the workload on Otto, too. But saying no to a minister wasn't easy for him.

Otto comforted him, saying he could manage the work and had Viril with him. He wanted Lucian to go farther and grow rather than be confined here.

Lucian understood what he meant and agreed to go with Dorian. Dorian was happy but also apologized for separating him. Lucian packed his stuff and left with Dorian. "Mr. Otto, Viril i will be successful and come back one day" lucian said bidding a tearful adieu to Otto and Viril.
