Chapter 6 - A Journey Begins

Back to Halcyon

After the party, Lucian set out for Halcyon.

Halcyon was the most peaceful place in all of Civitas. It was also the least monitored by the government due to its reputation for tranquility.

Excited to meet Mr. Otto and Viril again, Lucian wrestled with whether to keep his plans to himself or confide in Viril. He decided to tell Viril some parts but keep the ring and his memories a secret, knowing Mr. Otto might worry too much and try to stop him.

Throughout the journey, his thoughts revolved around Automara. The recent incidents had left a mark on his mental state, adding urgency to his mission.

A Warm Welcome

Upon arriving in Halcyon, Lucian found it unchanged, though Otto's bakery had become the pride of the city. Its reputation had grown so much that visitors from other cities sought it out, thanks to the minister's praise.

When Lucian reached the bakery, he pretended to be a customer and ordered pudding—a dish absent from the menu and a shared favorite with Viril. Soon, Mr. Otto burst from the kitchen, yelling, "Lucian...!! You're back!"

He hugged Lucian so hard he could barely breathe.

"You'll kill him, old man," Viril teased from behind, only to receive a sharp "Thwackk!" from Otto.

"Ow! Ow! Ow! You'll kill me, Mr. Otto!" Viril yelped.

"Disrespectful brat," Otto retorted.

Lucian couldn't contain his laughter.

"What's so funny?" Viril asked, mock-offended.

"Nothing. I missed you, buddy," Lucian said emotionally.

"Me too," Viril replied, hugging him back.

Catching Up

"You must have stories and things you learned over there," Viril said. "Tell us all about Civitas Primus and your experiences!"

"Sure, but tend to the customers first. I'll help too," Lucian replied.

They worked swiftly, and as the day ended, they gathered to chat. Lucian shared tales of Civitas Primus, its towering buildings, and the government's stronghold.

A Shocking Revelation

"So, what brings you here?" Viril asked later that evening.

"I'm quitting," Lucian replied.

Both Viril and Mr. Otto were stunned.

"Did the minister treat you badly?" Viril asked, anger flashing in his eyes.

"No, he was kind to me," Lucian assured them.

"Then why?" Otto asked.

"I want to travel, explore, and learn new things to improve my cooking," Lucian explained.

Otto nodded in approval. "If that's what you feel is right, then go. You're young and have much to experience."

Though their support comforted Lucian, guilt gnawed at him for hiding the truth.

Later, Lucian confided in Viril.

"I actually want to go to Automara," he admitted.

Viril's eyes widened in shock. "That's too risky! Why do you want to go there?"

"There's something I need to find," Lucian said, his determination unwavering.

Seeing Lucian's resolve, Viril knew he couldn't stop him. "Do you have a plan?"

"Yes. I'll return to Civitas Primus, then head to Ironclad, Ashen Ridge, and Sylvara to reach the dome," Lucian explained.

"I'll meet you in each city. Write me a letter when you can," Viril offered.

"No, that's too much. Stay here and help Otto," Lucian insisted.

"It's nothing. I'll visit whenever I can," Viril said firmly.

Lucian felt lighter knowing Viril supported him.

A Day in Halcyon

Lucian spent his remaining time in Halcyon visiting its famous spots with Viril, savoring dishes and recipes. They laughed, reminisced, and shared heartfelt moments.

That evening, they joined Otto for dinner, chatting until their hearts were content.

A Bittersweet Farewell

The day of Lucian's departure arrived. Otto, despite his reluctance, encouraged him.

"Always remember you have a home here. Come back anytime," Otto said.

Lucian teared up. "I will be back," he promised.

As he set off on his journey, he felt a mix of excitement and sadness, knowing he was leaving behind the comfort of home for the unknown dangers ahead.
