Chapter 52 - Forehead shadow

After an investigation conducted by our technical department, it was discovered that the phone number belonged to a nun from Kangcheng Orphanage.

Could it be that Shanya Yun is hiding at Kangcheng Orphanage? My God, I never expected it to be there. I was planning to set off, but at this moment, Li Siqi became even more hysterical. She seemed deranged, constantly scratching at her neck and arms.

Xiao Yuande said fearfully, "Captain He, please bring her back to normal! If this continues, something terrible will happen to her!"

I immediately struck Li Siqi on the back of her neck with my palm, causing her to pass out. I applied some medicinal liquid to her nose, and after a while, she woke up. She opened her mouth and said, sobbing, "How could this happen? I feel so sorry for Shanya Yun!"

"I understand, but that can't excuse her actions as a murderer!" I replied. I advised Li Siqi to rest, and with Gao Qiang accompanying her, she left the basement and exited the hospital. We quickly left the hospital as well.

The next destination was Kangcheng Orphanage. How strange—several cases seem to lead us here. Is this just a coincidence?

When Xiao Yuande, Zhang Wang, and I arrived at Kangcheng Orphanage, we found that the director had been replaced. To our surprise, it was none other than Sister Zhong, whom I had met before. I remembered her name was Zhong Bailan.

"Hello, Zhong Bailan. Congratulations on becoming the director here!"

"You're too kind. Officer He, what brings you here today?"

I asked, "Has someone named Shanya Yun recently arrived here?"

"Shanya Yun? She's not new here; she often comes by. She's adopted several girls from here."

Oh! Just as I was about to ask where Shanya Yun was, I saw several children in the distance gathered around a woman playing the game Plants vs. Zombies. The children were having a great time, and the woman had a radiant smile on her face.

Although the children were treating her as if she were a zombie, chasing and attacking her in the game, she was still full of joy. That woman was none other than Nurse Shanya Yun, the person we had been searching for all along.

When we approached her, she paused her game with the children and let them continue playing on their own. I said, "Miss Shanya Yun, we suspect you are involved in..."

Before I could finish, Shanya Yun interrupted, "I knew you would come looking for me!"

"You actually hid here, in Kangcheng Orphanage," Xiao Yuande remarked.

"Hide? I never intended to hide. Do you think I'm unaware of the police's capabilities? I knew I'd be discovered sooner or later. I just wanted to visit these children before you arrested me."

"It seems you do have some compassion. But how could you bring yourself to harm those women? They, like you, are women with families!"

"Let's not talk about this here. I'll go with you," she said.

It seemed Shanya Yun didn't want the children to know what she had done, so I agreed. As we were about to leave, Zhang Chunxia, whom I had previously brought to the orphanage, appeared. She saw me and grabbed my hand, saying, "Brother He Sheng, you're back again!"

I stopped and didn't get into the car. I asked, "Don't you hate me?"

"No, I don't. Although you arrested my uncle, you didn't harm my aunt or sister. Besides, I know it's not your fault. You were just doing your job. I've been wondering when my uncle will be able to come back."

I replied, "Soon. When you grow up, work hard, and earn money to take care of them."

I gently looked at her, took out two pieces of Alpenliebe candy from my pocket, and placed them in her palm, saying, "Go back and study hard!"

"Thank you, Brother He Sheng," Zhang Chunxia said before skipping back into the orphanage. I then escorted Shanya Yun to the police car.

Soon, we brought Shanya Yun to the interrogation room. I asked her, "Were you the one who poisoned and killed those women?"

"You've already found the basement, haven't you? Why bother asking?"

"Fine. Since you've confessed, sign this document," I said, handing her a file. However, she suddenly said, "You can't imprison me! I'm pregnant!"

Her words stunned me. It seemed to be true. According to the court's regulations, pregnant criminals cannot be incarcerated. But that's for the courts to decide. We still needed to complete the arrest procedures.

I said, "You can explain this to the judge. For now, since you've confessed, can you tell us why you did it?"

Shanya Yun sneered, then her emotions gradually darkened. She seemed to be recalling everything from her past and began to tell her story.

She explained how the scar on her forehead had led to her being mocked with various nicknames throughout her life: zombie, corpse, headless duchess, and even hag. These experiences made her deeply insecure and perpetually gloomy.

She thought her life was ruined until one day she was admitted to Haigang City Medical School. After graduating, she worked at Zhenxi Hospital, where she met Dr. Xu. She said that while everyone else despised her, Dr. Xu would smile at her, polite and cheerful.

Shanya Yun quickly fell in love with him. But over time, she noticed Dr. Xu frequently interacted intimately with other women. Seeing this broke her heart and filled her with anger.

One day, Dr. Xu returned to the clinic looking distraught. He asked Shanya Yun to undress. She thought it was finally her chance and did everything she could to please him. But the next day, Dr. Xu acted as if nothing had happened and ignored her.

Knowing Dr. Xu would never truly love her, she began observing the women around him. Using her medical knowledge, she started poisoning them, killing any woman who got close to him.

I asked, "Did it work? You should know what kind of person Xu Haorang is."

"I don't care. No matter what, I had to kill them. Even if it meant killing every woman in the world! As long as no one else liked him, he would be mine!"

"How naive. You've been blinded by love," I scolded.

Shanya Yun shook her head. "I'm willing to give up everything for Xu Haorang!"

"I don't know what place he holds in your heart," I said.

"He's my god, my everything," Shanya Yun said with a look of bliss. But I thought to myself, he never cared about her at all. Although she was pitiful, her actions had violated the law, and she must bear legal responsibility for them.
