Chereads / The Man from The Cult (Devil) / Chapter 4 - New Guy

Chapter 4 - New Guy

The first years of working in this office, were just like any other office. Going to work in the morning, and going home in the evening. The days went by like that, until Irina forgot about a building that she often passed. Maybe because now the building was quiet, and Irina started to get busy with her never-ending work. "Psssttt!" Irina's two eyes with curly eyelashes glanced towards the source of the sound. Lucy, the woman who used to look at her cynically, was now her close friend. More precisely, her best friend. She and Lucy were the only office employees who always ate lunch outside, unlike everyone else who brought food from home. Lucy pointed to the wall clock, the time was starting to show break time in a few minutes. The woman signaled for them to immediately look for lunch because her friend loved food so much, but Irina shook her head. Deborah was a rather fierce boss who couldn't tolerate anything, including working hours even for a second. Lucy, who understood Irina's rejection, could only sulk at her desk. Irina smiled at Lucy, honestly her stomach was also churning. But Irina wanted a good career and a clean assessment from her boss, she had to be an exemplary employee so that she could get a raise or promotion quickly. Irina's work was done, she waited for lunch while sitting there staring at the clock on the wall. There was no chat between fellow workers because Deborah was always monitoring them with her ears, and it seemed like the people in this office were working too hard. Checkle... The main door to this office suddenly opened. A man entered the room alone without anyone behind him, Irina had never seen this man before even though she had worked here for several months. His body was tall, wrapped in a suit and coat and shiny black shoes. His steps were so calm that everyone was hypnotized to look at him, and there was one thing that felt strange to Irina. There were several people who stood up from their seats, even though they were focused on working. Then they bowed when the man walked past them, of course it made Irina and several other people surprised and confused. As if the man was so respected and known by several people in this office, Lucy even looked at Irina. Oddly, Irina didn't take her eyes off the man. Meanwhile, the man's gaze was only straight towards Deborah's office door, but he glanced towards Irina's desk, until finally the man opened Deborah's office door. "Ir.... Irina?!" Lucy exclaimed who was already in front of Irina, as if she had just realized. "Let's have lunch! I've been calling you since earlier, but you were just daydreaming." Lucy snapped. "Really? How long?" Irina asked, oddly her heartbeat felt faster than usual. "Quite a long time, it seems like you've been hypnotized by a handsome man who has a high position like a CEO, like in famous novels." Lucy teased, Irina didn't answer. They finally went out to find lunch, although Irina glanced at Deborah's closed door. "Did you see that?" Irina asked as if she was still under hypnosis. "What?" Lucy asked, the two of them entered a fast food restaurant in front of the office. "Everyone bowed as if saluting, do you know who he is?" Irina asked while waiting for their order. "I don't know, I've only been working for three years and I'm not a babygirl who has connections with bosses in ties." Lucy was still indifferent even though they had just experienced something strange. "Actually, not everyone, just a few people. And as far as I know, those people are old people. So it's natural that they know who that man was." Irina listened to Lucy's explanation, now they were sitting opposite each other while eating lunch. Well, maybe Lucy was right. Maybe Irina was just too paranoid about little things since her ex-husband's affair, she continued her lunch without thinking anything else. "That's not the first strange thing I've experienced." Suddenly Lucy spoke up, Irina who had just tried to think positively, immediately pulled the chair she was sitting on to get closer to Lucy. "Have you ever experienced other strange things?" Lucy asked enthusiastically, the woman nodded while chewing her fries. "I've only been working there for a year. By the way, I was able to work there because of my friend's recommendation." "Oh, really? How did your friend know about that company?" Irina asked back. "I don't know." Lucy shrugged her shoulders indifferently. "The most important thing is, I'm working now." "Then, where is your friend?" Irina asked again. "He passed away, two years after helping me get a job there." Lucy answered, Irina was silent this time. Her brow furrowed as everything became stranger to her. "Uhm... then, what strange thing were you talking about earlier?" Irina tried to change the topic because she felt uncomfortable when she heard Lucy mention her friend's death. "That night, I still had a lot of work. Deborah even nagged at me because my work was not finished until nightfall, even though it usually was. That woman always told her subordinates to work overtime, but that night, it was strange." "... until finally, exactly at ten at night. Deborah told me to go home and do my work at home, of course I was happy at that time. But..." Lucy stopped at the end of her sentence which made Irina even more curious. "Suddenly when I wanted to leave the building, the elevator had just opened. There were many people coming to the building, none of whom I knew. I thought they were the top brass of the company or business partners, investors or something." "I went out of the building, looked at the top floor right where our office is, because all the outer walls are made of glass. So I can see clearly from down there." "But did you tell anyone? This is just our secret, because if it gets out, Deborah might fire me!" Irina took a deep breath, Lucy stopped telling her story. "Yes, I won't talk about this to anyone." Irina replied. "Okay, that night was very quiet. There was no one, only the security guard on guard downstairs, and from downstairs, when I walked home. I saw a dark red light right in the office where we are now." Lucy said, Irina shuddered in horror. For some reason, there was no ghost in Lucy's story. But the red light.. "Was there a meeting?" Irina asked trying to think positively. "A meeting with red lights? Do you think I'm stupid? In a company that big? And there's still Deborah up there." Lucy said while pointing towards the office building where they worked. Irina looked back at the office building, there was nothing strange and scary when seen from the outside. In fact, it looked more modern than the buildings next to it, but after hearing Lucy's story. Irina became even more surprised, because from the beginning Irina became friends with Lucy, the woman never seemed to lie. Lunch time was over, Irina and Lucy had been in the office before Deborah started her nagging. No one was allowed to come late and go home early, Deborah was very disciplined. No wonder Mr. Darren always relied on Deborah, and other strange things. Deborah seemed to never be sick. Never took leave, never asked for permission, never missed work. As if the woman had no family and other priorities besides work. Lost in her own thoughts, Irina did not realize that there was already someone beside her. Since earlier she had only looked towards the glass looking at the skyscrapers in this city. "Mrs. Irina?" Irina was surprised, hearing the voice until finally she turned to the right and saw that Deborah was already beside her with both hands on her hips. Lucy who was watching from a distance could only rub her forehead seeing her friend was unlucky, since earlier Deborah was beside her calling Irina. But Irina was like a princess who was looking at the beautiful scenery outside. "Eh, Miss Deborah!" Irina smiled awkwardly. "Can I help you?" Irina asked trying to be professional, but strangely Deborah never scolded Irina. "Yes, can you come to my room for a moment? The audit team is already inside waiting for all your data for almost a year of work." Deborah said. Irina swallowed her own saliva, in the world of accountants and administration, the audit team is like the angel of death. If there is the slightest mistake, your job will be lost and your career will end. And always, the audit team comes suddenly. That clarified the man who came suddenly this afternoon. "Okay, Miss." Irina answered, lowering her voice because she herself did not dare to face the audit team. Deborah entered first, Irina adjusted her clothes and appearance because it seemed like there were many people in Deborah's room. She tied her straight blonde hair to make it look neater. Before Irina finally knocked on Deborah's door, for the first time Irina stepped into this room. The room was so cold, maybe because it was only occupied by one person unlike Irina's office where there were many people. The room temperature also affected body temperature, plus in Deborah's room there were already several men sitting there. Including the man who glanced at Irina this afternoon before he entered Deborah's office. There was a desk in the corner of the room that seemed to belong to Deborah, and there was a long table that was usually used for meetings. That's where all the men sat in a row facing Irina who was still standing waiting for further orders. "You may sit Miss Irina!" Said Deborah who was at her desk. Deborah nodded as she pulled out a chair, causing a fairly loud squeak in this quiet room. She sat with an awkward feeling, facing four men who she said were the audit team. While the man who had been sitting at the end of the audit team this afternoon. Didn't look at Irina at all. "Miss Irina?" Said a man who was right in front of Irina. "Yes?" "Only, Irina?" Ask the man again. "Yes, sir!" Irina replied. "We are not here to ask about work, because we know you are the best graduate in your campus. And it is very inappropriate if we who are here doubt your abilities." He said at length. Here Irina felt very confused, whether to be happy and big-headed or otherwise. This was Irina's first job, in her heart she wondered if work was always like this? Irina who could not answer just smiled awkwardly. "On the contrary, we just want to ask a few questions considering this is your first year working, and you will continue your contract, is that right?" Asked the man again. "Yes, sir!" Irina nodded. "Okay, I hope you will not get bored working here, Miss Irina!" Irina shook her head, she really liked her job of course. Both of her parents also fully supported Irina's desire to work. "What is your life's foundation, Miss Irina?" Asked the man, at first Irina thought this was just a psychological test question asked when applying for a job. And in fact, if Irina wanted to answer honestly. She had no life foundation at all. Maybe it was just luck.. "Do you believe in God, Miss Irina?" He asked again, as if he knew that Irina could not answer the first question and just kept quiet. This time Irina nodded. "Yes, sir! I believe in God." Irina answered even though she herself was not a religious woman. "It's good, if you believe in God and are not a liberal or an atheist. That means you believe in heaven and hell, while life in this world is just a passing thing." Irina began to knit her eyebrows together as confusion began to hit. Who knows, since childhood Irina was a good girl who came from a good family. Becoming a wife who was devoted to her husband, until finally that belief faded since her husband betrayed her. Irina is now on the verge between still believing in the ideology of faith or just continuing her life. "Honestly, I am not a devout person, sir!" Irina answered, everyone in the room including Deborah and the man immediately looked at Irina. Digging deeper to make sure Irina's expression was not lying. "Too bad, we prefer devout people. But you must have your own reasons why you are far from God." Said the man who had been asking Irina questions. "Desperate, depressed, no faith in humans?" "Yes, all of that, yes." Irina answered immediately without a pause, the man was so calm while asking Irina questions. "Regret can make anyone distance themselves from God. That's why there is a term, if you are close to God. Your life will be given more trials." The man said, of course it made Irina think. Could that be why her life is now better than before?
