Chapter 13 - Chapter Eleven: Steps Forward

Adrian's consistent presence began to weave itself into the fabric of Mia's life. He attended school events, offered to help with chores, and even managed to organize a surprise Saturday outing to the zoo. The boys adored him more with each passing day, and even Mia had to admit that having Adrian around made things easier.

But easier didn't mean uncomplicated.

One evening, after a particularly hectic day, Adrian stayed to help clean up after dinner. As Mia washed the dishes, Adrian dried and stacked them beside her. The silence between them wasn't tense, but it carried the weight of words unsaid.

"You've been quiet lately," Adrian remarked, breaking the stillness.

Mia glanced at him, her expression unreadable. "Just tired. Life doesn't slow down."

"I could help more," Adrian offered, his voice earnest.

"You're already doing enough," she replied, handing him another dish.

Adrian paused, searching her face. "Mia, when will you let me in? Really let me in?"

Her hands froze, water running over her fingers. She looked down at the sink, the words forming in her mind before she dared speak them aloud.

"It's not that simple," she said finally. "Trust isn't something I can hand over like a plate. It has to be built."

"And I'm trying to build it," Adrian said softly. "But I can't do it alone."

Mia sighed, turning to face him. "Adrian, it's not just about the boys. It's about me. I'm scared. Scared that if I let you in, you'll leave again."

Adrian reached out, gently placing his hand over hers. "I'm not going anywhere. Not this time."

His touch was warm, steady, and Mia felt her defenses cracking. But before she could say more, Liam's voice called from the hallway.

"Mom! I can't find my blanket!"

Mia pulled her hand away, retreating to the safety of her role as a mother. "I'll be right there," she said, leaving Adrian alone in the kitchen.

The next weekend, Adrian suggested a family picnic at the park. He packed the basket himself, filling it with sandwiches, snacks, and the boys' favorite juice boxes.

Mia watched as he carefully folded a blanket and placed it into the car. His attention to detail was surprising, even endearing.

At the park, they found a shaded spot under a large oak tree. The boys ran off to play soccer, their laughter carrying on the breeze.

As Mia and Adrian sat on the blanket, sipping lemonade, the quiet between them felt less strained.

"You're good at this," Mia said, nodding toward the boys.

Adrian smiled, his gaze following them. "I'm learning. They make it easy."

Mia picked at the edge of the blanket, her mind drifting. "You've changed."

Adrian turned to her, his expression serious. "I had to. Losing you—losing them—was a wake-up call. I'm not proud of the man I was, but I'm working hard to be better."

Mia met his gaze, her heart tugging in two directions. "I want to believe you, Adrian. I do. But I've spent years trying to protect myself and the boys from this kind of hurt. It's hard to let that go."

"I know," Adrian said, his voice gentle. "And I'm not asking you to let it go overnight. I'm just asking for a chance."

Mia's eyes softened, and she nodded slightly. "One step at a time," she murmured.

Adrian smiled, relief washing over him. "One step at a time."

As the sun began to set, the boys collapsed onto the blanket, their energy spent. Adrian pulled out a bag of cookies, handing them to the boys with a wink.

Mia watched the scene unfold, her heart swelling despite her reservations. For the first time in years, she allowed herself to imagine what a future with Adrian might look like—a future where they were a family, whole and happy.

But even as hope began to take root, a shadow of doubt lingered. Could she truly trust Adrian to stay this time?

Mia didn't have the answers yet. But as she sat beneath the fading light of the day, surrounded by the people she loved most, she decided she was willing to find out.
