Chapter 16 - Chapter Fourteen: Turning the Tables

Adrian's promise to protect Mia and the boys took on a new urgency after the second note. He decided it was time to involve Clara, who had a knack for investigative work thanks to her no-nonsense attitude and resourcefulness.

When Adrian and Mia met Clara at her small café downtown, she listened intently as they recounted everything—the letters, Adrian's confrontation with Elena, and the latest note.

"This is getting out of hand," Clara said, her brow furrowing. "We can't just sit around and wait for this person to make their next move."

"What do you suggest?" Adrian asked, leaning forward.

"We need to figure out who's behind this, and fast," Clara replied. "The handwriting on the notes—have you noticed anything familiar?"

Mia shook her head. "No, it's anonymous, and I don't recognize the style."

Clara pulled out her phone. "I'll call my cousin. He works in law enforcement and might be able to analyze the handwriting. If this person has a record, we might get a lead."

Back at home, Adrian set up additional security measures. He installed cameras around the house and made sure the locks were secure. Though Mia appreciated his efforts, the tension in the house was palpable.

That evening, as the boys played in their room, Adrian sat down with Mia at the kitchen table.

"We'll figure this out," he said firmly. "I'm not letting anyone hurt you or the boys."

Mia sighed, her fingers tracing the edge of her coffee mug. "It's not just about the notes, Adrian. It's about trust. You being here—it's bringing up all these feelings I thought I'd buried."

Adrian reached across the table, covering her hand with his. "I know I hurt you, Mia. But I'm here now, and I'll spend the rest of my life proving to you that you can trust me."

Her eyes searched his, and for the first time in years, she allowed herself to believe that maybe he really had changed.

The next day, Clara called with an update.

"My cousin ran a preliminary check," she said. "No matches in the system, but he did suggest looking into anyone local who might have had access to your house or workplace."

Adrian and Mia exchanged a look. "Could it be someone from the school?" Mia asked, her mind racing.

"It's possible," Clara said. "Think about anyone who's acted suspiciously or shown too much interest in your life."

Mia thought back to the past few months. There were a handful of parents and colleagues she interacted with regularly, but none who stood out. Except…

"There's a parent—Mr. Hargrove," Mia said slowly. "He's always lingered after school events, asking personal questions. I thought he was just overly friendly, but now I'm not so sure."

Adrian frowned. "Do you think he could be behind this?"

"I don't know," Mia admitted. "But it's worth looking into."

---

That evening, Adrian decided to confront Mr. Hargrove after Mia mentioned she'd be seeing him at an upcoming parent-teacher conference.

As Mia focused on her meetings, Adrian waited in the parking lot, scanning the crowd for Hargrove. When he finally spotted the man, Adrian's protective instincts flared.

Hargrove was a tall, wiry man with an air of nervous energy. Adrian approached him calmly, but his voice was firm.

"Mr. Hargrove, can I have a word with you?"

The man blinked in surprise. "Of course. Is something wrong?"

Adrian folded his arms, his gaze piercing. "You've been asking a lot of personal questions about Mia. Why?"

Hargrove's face flushed. "I—I didn't mean anything by it. She's just such a kind person. I guess I was curious."

"Curiosity doesn't explain sending threatening letters," Adrian said, watching the man's reaction closely.

Hargrove paled. "Letters? I don't know what you're talking about."

Adrian stepped closer, his voice dropping. "If you're lying, I'll find out. And if you're behind this, you'd better pray the police get to you before I do."

Hargrove stammered something unintelligible before retreating quickly to his car.

Adrian returned to Mia, recounting the interaction. "He seemed scared, but that doesn't mean he's innocent," Adrian concluded.

Mia nodded, her expression troubled. "We can't be sure it's him. But at least we're narrowing it down."

---

As the days passed, the tension remained, but Mia and Adrian found comfort in each other's company. The boys noticed the change in their dynamic and often teased them about being a "team."

One night, as Adrian tucked the boys into bed, Liam asked, "Are you staying forever now, Dad?"

Adrian's throat tightened. "I'm trying, buddy. I want to be here for you and your mom."

"Good," Liam said sleepily. "We like it when you're here."

Adrian kissed the top of his son's head, a newfound resolve settling in his chest. He wouldn't let anything—or anyone—tear this family apart again.

---

The following morning, another letter arrived. This time, it was taped to the front door.

You've been warned. Stop digging or face the consequences.

Mia's hands shook as she showed it to Adrian. "This is getting worse."

Adrian's eyes darkened as he read the note. "Then it's time to stop playing defense. We're going on the offensive."

Mia's fear mingled with a growing sense of determination. Whoever was behind this had underestimated the strength of a family united.
