Chapter 16 - Thoughts

As the teleportation spell landed them in Everhearth, Ezra stood motionless for a moment. His gaze was fixed on the horizon, the place where Marveil this worlds home of knowledge, commerce, and the heart of the guild had once stood. Now, it was nothing more than a memory, burned into the collective consciousness of those who had witnessed its fall. It was a loss that echoed deep within him.

Guild Master Aleric stood beside him, his face grim. His usual confident demeanor had been replaced with a solemn weariness. The people they had saved now in Everhearth were shaken, but they were safe for now.

Ezra turned to Aleric, his mind still racing with the horrifying implications of what had just transpired. "I can't understand it. Why would Archmage Varathiel do this? Why betray everything he stood for? And how did he know what we were doing? He knew my name. He knew everything."

Aleric placed a hand on Ezra's shoulder, offering what little comfort he could. "The Void is insidious. They have their ways of finding out things, of twisting even the purest hearts. But there is something more. Someone must have been feeding him information. Someone close to us."

Ezra's eyes widened as the thought struck him, and his mind reeled. He recalled the moment when he had been in Everhearth, right before the fight with the Guild Master the receptionist, the one who had seemed so eager to help him. She had been so friendly, so helpful. But the way she had acted after the fight... the strange way she had looked at him.

Then, it clicked.

"The receptionist," Ezra muttered under his breath. "She was the one who was recording the fight... She could've been the one feeding information to the Void Borns."

The realization hit him like a jolt of electricity. But there was more to it more spies hidden in plain sight. This wasn't just one isolated incident.

"Could there be others?" Ezra asked, his voice filled with the weight of suspicion. "If the Void can infiltrate like this... they must have more agents, more spies working against us."

Guild Owner Thalion nodded gravely, rubbing his chin as he thought. "It would be foolish to assume that the receptionist was the only one. This goes deeper, much deeper than we've realized. Varathiel... he must have been using the spy network for months, if not years. All of our plans, our movements... they were being watched."

Ezra's mind was spinning with the weight of these revelations. The Void wasn't just a distant, creeping force it had already infiltrated their ranks. Archmage Varathiel's betrayal had only scratched the surface of something far more insidious. It was a sobering thought. They needed to act quickly.

"We need to find out who else is involved," Ezra said with a newfound resolve, turning to Thalion. "I'll stay with you and plan what's next. But we need to move fast. There's no telling how deep this goes."

Aleric nodded in agreement, his voice calm yet filled with determination. "I'll stay behind in Everhearth to protect the people. I'll keep their spirits strong, and I'll fortify the village into a town as much as I can. You and Thalion should make for Valsenna. We may need to involve the King and secure more allies for our journey. The more people we have, the stronger we'll be. We have to be ready for whatever the Void throws at us next."

Ezra nodded, appreciating the wisdom in Aleric's words. But one thing still nagged at him.

"What about the Archmage's Apprentices, Liora, and Elara?" Ezra asked. "Should we bring them with us?"

Thalion hesitated for a moment, his expression unreadable. Then, after a pause, he spoke. "The Apprentice is the key. They know things we don't. They were trained by Varathiel, after all. If we're going to stand a chance against what's coming, we'll need all the help we can get. Take them with you. But keep your guard up. We don't know if the Apprentice has truly turned against us."

Ezra glanced over at Elara and Liora, the Archmage's Apprentices, who had been quietly standing nearby, listening to the conversation. Elara's and Liora's face was a mixture of confusion and sorrow, sorrow for the fate of their mentor, Archmage Varathiel, but also a sense of resolve that echoed Ezra's own. They had no choice but to move forward.

"I'll head to Valsenna," Ezra said, his tone firm. "And we'll uncover the truth, even if it means breaking the Void's grip on this world later than planned."

Thalion nodded solemnly, preparing the necessary arrangements for their journey. "I'll gather what resources we can, but be warned, the road ahead will be difficult. There are many that would see the Void's influence spread across this continent."

As Ezra and the others made their way toward Valsenna, their hearts were heavy with the weight of the looming war. But they had a clear goal in mind: stop the Void, uncover the spies, and put an end to Archmage Varathiel's plans before it was too late.

Ezra, though weary from the battles fought and the loss of so much, knew one thing for certain: they couldn't afford to hesitate now. The future of their world rested on the choices they made in the coming days.

And so, they began their journey toward Valsenna, with hope as their guide and the darkness of the Void at their backs.
