Chapter 17 - Mountain

As Ezra, Thalion, Elara, and Liora made their way toward Valsenna, the desolation wrought by the Void became increasingly apparent. The once-lush fields were now barren, the skies dimmed with an unnatural gray haze. Every so often, Ezra would activate his Voidbreaker Slash, a faint pulse of energy rippling through the air, as if to ward off the creeping shadows.

It wasn't long before they reached a small village perched precariously on the edge of a rugged mountain range. The village, Greystone Hollow, was eerily quiet, its once-busy streets now filled with the hushed whispers of despair. The air was thick with tension, and the group quickly realized that the Void's influence had touched even this remote settlement.

A Fateful Encounter

The four entered the village square, observing the nervous glances of the villagers. Ezra used Identify to assess the people and surroundings. It didn't take long for him to notice a pattern many of the villagers bore faint traces of Void corruption.

"Something's wrong here," Ezra muttered, his eyes narrowing as he approached a trembling elder seated near a ruined fountain.

The elder looked up at him, eyes filled with a mixture of fear and desperation. "Y-you're not from here, are you?" the old man stammered. "Please, you must help us."

Ezra knelt before him, his tone firm but reassuring. "What's happening here? Why is this village so affected by the Void?"

The elder sighed heavily, glancing toward the mountain looming in the distance. "It's the mountain… The Void has been seeping down from its peak. Strange creatures emerge from the caves at night. They've taken our livestock, our food… our people."

Before Ezra could respond, the familiar chime of the System echoed in his mind:

---

New Side Quest: Restoring the Mountain

Objective: Collect the scattered World Runes to restore balance and cleanse the Void's influence.

Progress: 0/5 World Runes found.

Reward: Increased XP, artifact-grade items, and a restored Greystone Hollow.

Penalty for Failure: Greystone Hollow falls completely to the Void.

---

Ezra shared the prompt with the others, who listened attentively. Thalion rubbed his temples, a frown deepening on his face. "World Runes… I've read about them. They're fragments of the planet's essence, used to maintain the balance of life. If we can find even one, it might be enough to weaken the Void's hold here."

"Then we don't have a choice," Ezra said decisively. "We're doing this."

---

The Search for the Rune

The villagers directed them toward the mountain caves, where the Void's corruption was said to be strongest. The journey up the rocky paths was perilous, with faint traces of Voidlings lurking in the shadows. As they climbed, Ezra used Identify frequently, scanning for anomalies.

Near the entrance to a particularly large cave, Ezra's skill revealed something unusual: a faint, pulsing light emanating from within.

"That must be it," he said, pointing toward the cave. "Something's in there."

The group ventured inside cautiously, encountering swarms of Voidlings that attacked relentlessly. Ezra activated Warden's Resolve, his enhanced strength and endurance allowing him to cleave through the smaller foes with ease. Elara supported with precise magical strikes, while Thalion manipulated time to slow their enemies' movements. Liora, with her expertise in dual-wielding weapons and precise attacks, kept the group's rear secure.

At the heart of the cave, they found the source of the light—a fragment of a World Rune, glowing faintly in defiance of the surrounding darkness. As Ezra approached, the light grew brighter, almost as if recognizing him.

The Encounter

Before they could claim the Rune, a Void-touched guardian emerged from the shadows a hulking beast with tendrils of darkness spilling from its form. Its roars shook the cavern, and the group immediately sprang into action.

Ezra charged forward, combining Voidbreaker Slash with Celestial Leap to strike the creature from above. Thalion used his time magic to create openings for Elara, whose precise blasts of arcane energy chipped away at the creature's defenses. Meanwhile, Liora unleashed a flurry of rapid strikes, targeting the guardian's weak points with pinpoint precision.

When the guardian seemed to gain the upper hand, Ezra merged his skills seamlessly, using Sanctum Aegis to shield his allies while simultaneously buffing their strength. The fight was intense, but through their coordination and Ezra's skill stacking, they emerged victorious.

With the guardian defeated, Ezra approached the glowing Rune, carefully lifting it. The System chimed once again:

---

World Rune Acquired: Rune of Restoration.

Progress: 1/5 World Runes found.

Returning to Greystone Hollow

The group descended the mountain with the Rune in hand, its light already pushing back the Void's corruption. The villagers gathered in awe as the Rune was placed in the village square, its energy radiating outward to cleanse the area.

While the immediate danger had passed, Ezra knew their journey was far from over. As they prepared to leave, the elder approached once more, tears of gratitude in his eyes. "You've given us hope," he said. "Thank you."

Ezra nodded, his resolve stronger than ever. "This is just the beginning. We'll find the other Runes and end this for good."

After securing the Rune of Restoration, Ezra, Thalion, Elara, and Liora sat around a campfire outside Greystone Hollow, processing the magnitude of their discovery. The soft glow of the Rune illuminated their faces, casting flickering shadows across their somber expressions.

"This changes everything," Thalion began, his voice steady but tinged with concern. "The World Runes weren't just scattered remnants of balance—they're tools. Tools that can stop the Void's advance."

Elara nodded, her blood-red eyes reflecting the Rune's light. "If this one Rune can push back the corruption in Greystone Hollow, imagine what all five could do together."

Ezra, seated cross-legged with the Rune in front of him, tapped his chin in thought. "That means we need to find the others. If this can shield an entire village, maybe all five together can shield the continent."

"I've heard tales of the other Runes' locations," Liora added, sharpening her blades with deliberate strokes. "But the problem is, they're scattered far and wide. And not all of them are going to be easy to get."

---

The Five World Runes

The group discussed their options late into the night, piecing together fragments of lore and rumors:

1. Valsenna: A Rune was rumored to rest deep within the royal archives of the capital. "It's probably still there," Thalion mused, "but with the Void creeping closer to the city, it won't stay safe for long."

2. Marveil: The Rune that once belonged to the continent's wealthiest region had already been taken by the Void Archmage Varathiel. Its retrieval would mean confronting the Archmage directly, a task that would require far more preparation.

3. Verdant Dominion: A lush and mystical land teeming with ancient life, guarded by sentient flora and ferocious beasts. "The Verdant Dominion is sacred," Elara warned. "If the Rune is there, the forest's protectors won't give it up easily."

4. The Freeholds of Ardyn: A chaotic region where city-states operate independently, often at odds with one another. "No one's in charge there," Liora said grimly. "If the Rune's in the Freeholds, it could be hidden anywhere, and no one will willingly part with something so valuable."

5. Aelden (Restoration): The Rune they had just retrieved in Greystone Hollow, now safely in their possession.

Mount Kabunian: A Key to Salvation

The following morning, the group decided to investigate the nearby Mount Kabunian, a revered peak known for its spiritual significance and rumored to hold ancient secrets. Ascending its rocky trails, they eventually came upon an ancient, rune-inscribed dais carved into the mountain's peak.

The Rune of Restoration began to glow faintly as Ezra approached the dais. "It's reacting," he murmured, carefully placing the Rune into one of the five grooves etched into the stone.

The Rune slid into place effortlessly, its light intensifying before stabilizing into a steady glow.

"It fits," Thalion said, awe in his voice. "This dais… It's a conduit. A shield for Aelden."

Ezra studied the other four empty slots, each marked with symbols corresponding to the other World Runes. "If we can collect and mount all five Runes here," he began, "the Void's interference on this continent could be completely blocked."

"But only on this continent," Elara reminded him. "The Void has already consumed six of the seven continents. Even if we shield Aelden, the rest of the world remains at risk."

"I know," Ezra said, determination hardening his voice. "But one step at a time. We need to secure Aelden first. If we can shield this continent, it'll give us a base of operations to strike back against the Void."

---

A New Mission

The group descended Mount Kabunian with a renewed sense of purpose. Each Rune presented unique challenges, but they now had a clear goal: collect the remaining four World Runes, mount them on the dais, and protect Aelden from the Void's encroachment.

"I'll say this," Liora remarked with a wry grin, "at least we know what we're up against now."

"And we know where to start," Thalion added. "Valsenna. It's on the way, and it'll give us the chance to gather allies and resources."

Ezra glanced back at the mountain, the light of the Rune of Restoration still faintly visible from their position. His mind raced with possibilities and strategies, but one thought stood out above the rest:

"We have to succeed," he said softly, his voice resolute. "If we don't, Aelden will fall like the rest."

With the mountain behind them and the path to Valsenna ahead, the group's journey was far from over. Their next steps would be to navigate a world teetering on the edge of destruction.
