Chapter 2 - Chaos

"Where the fuck is my phone? Damn it" Kaia growled, kicking a pebble below her feet.

Her face lit up with joy. The pebble had revealed her phone, perfectly positioned where it landed, just waiting for her to grab it.

Just as she reached for her phone, a bike sped past and crashed into it, shattering the device into pieces.

"Damn, what's going on with my luck today?" she growled, cursed and stomped her feet, gathering the shattered pieces around her. "There's no way to fix this now." She shouted in frustration, directing her anger at the biker who had sped away, completely oblivious to her plight...

"Well.... fuck you!" She cursed, showing a middle finger to the direction where the biker fled.

She wasn't sure of her fortune today and was expecting a major misfortune awaiting her. It was as if the god was giving her signals.

As she was about to turn back, she saw a little girl holding a balloon. It was only for a mere second when Kaia caught a glimpse of her talking to a man and then following him, letting go of that balloon. The girl's eyes darkened and her grip to the balloon lose after that guy said something to her. Strangely she didn't even look back at the balloon flying away.

It was odd, definitely odd for a child. Kaia was getting a bad feeling for it when she already walked past off and kept thinking about the girl.

Kaia clenched her fist and finally took a sharp turn and went into the alleyway where that man had gone with the girl earlier.

She peeped, hiding behind a trash pile. The man appeared to be pale and thin, he was wearing a hood.

"It is such a pain walking among those humans." He said looking at the girl, "Damn those Apostles, how am I supposed to live like this?"

"What is he blabbering to her and why at such a deserted place?" Kaia suspected,

Kaia's heart nearly stopped as the man in front of her shifted—his body stretching, cracking, his face contorting into something… wrong. Fur sprouted from his skin, and his jaw—God—it split, opening wide enough to swallow a person whole. "How is this brat....grrr... going to m-make up for my luuunch?"

She barely caught her breath before her instincts kicked in. Without thinking, she scooped the girl into her arms and bolted.

The creature hesitated, confused for a split second, giving Kaia the window she needed. Her feet pounded the pavement, her pulse like a drumbeat in her ears. But the monster was quick to recover. A low, terrifying growl echoed behind her, making her blood freeze. It was coming for them.

In a burst of pure panic—and maybe stupidity—Kaia threw a glance back and shot the monster the middle finger.

"Yeah, I'm definitely dead now," she muttered under her breath.

The monster roared, a bone-rattling sound that seemed to tear through the air itself. It wasn't just chasing her anymore—it was angry, and Kaia had made a serious mistake. Two kilometers, relentless and fast. She was barely staying ahead.

The weight of the girl in her arms dragged her down, her legs burning, but Kaia pushed through. Just a bit more.

The streets around her were a bizarre mix of chaos and apathy. People were standing around, staring at their phones like they were watching some kind of insane livestream, their faces illuminated by the glow of their screens. A few screamed and ran, but most just… watched.

One guy, who looked like he had just stepped out of an office meeting, clutched his chest and froze—either in shock or maybe trying to pretend this was just a bad dream.

Cars were wrecked, debris scattered everywhere. She dodged the wreckage—shattered glass, twisted metal—and wondered if anyone had gotten hurt. But there was no time to check. The monster was still coming. fuck

She tripped.

Kaia crashed to the ground, her ankle screaming in pain as she struggled to push herself up. Not now... Her hands scrambled for purchase, fingers slipping on the dirt. She forced herself forward, each movement slower than the last, the weight of panic clawing at her chest. The girl was so close—she couldn't stop now.

Her breath hitched and her eyes widened in horror as she felt the heavy panting of the monster above her. Gasp

Kaia quickly shielded the girl with her body, barely sitting up. No no no.....She was too terrified to even look back, the disgusting sounds of panting, his saliva dropping ...the smell of his mouth was enough to make her frozen.

But then,

She felt empty…..empty around her stomach?.....Why was it so….? She slowly looked below, down at her stomach, her eyes widened in shock as she realised that there was blood…. a lot of blood!

And also..... the monster's claw? Which was piercing through her stomach. Why didn't she notice it? Was she in so much fear of the monster being right behind her that she didn't notice it? She started panicking and hyperventilating, she soon felt a pain, the pain was indescribable and unimaginable.

It hurts…..it hurts…hurts…hurts .....she wanted to scream, crying her lungs out but she didn't. Everything slowed down as if time had stopped, maybe it was only for her? And then..... she saw the claw piercing her body, slowly reaching to the girl.

With all her leftover strength, She grabbed the claw with her hands stopping it from reaching the girl. I can't… I can't let the girl die! the words kept repeating in her mind. She gritted her teeth as it was becoming more and more unbearable to hold on to it, her hands were bleeding and shaking because of the sharpness of the nail of its claw. She spat blood.

Then her vision darkened as something blocked her view, and chills went down her spine as soon as she realised that it was... its mouth, devouring her from her head and then reaching for her whole body to swallow her.

No this can't be....
