Chereads / Quest App: From Sloth to Sage / Chapter 7 - Breaking the Cycle

Chapter 7 - Breaking the Cycle

The early morning sun streamed through Alex's curtains, nudging him awake far earlier than he would've preferred.

Normally, he'd groan, pull the blanket over his head, and drift back into slumber, but the Quest App had other ideas.

[Daily Quest: Begin your day with a 20-minute walk.]

"Walking? In the morning?" Alex muttered to himself, rubbing his eyes.

Dylan, who had somehow commandeered Alex's couch as his new semi-permanent residence, cracked an eye open.

"What's with the monologue? You got another quest?"

"Yeah, it wants me to walk."

Dylan chuckled and rolled over. "Good luck with that. I'll be right here, dreaming of pancakes."

Alex sighed but dragged himself out of bed. This whole self-improvement thing was starting to feel like an elaborate prank, yet he couldn't deny that completing the tasks felt... good.

The air outside was crisp and cool, a stark contrast to the stuffy apartment.

Alex stuffed his hands into his jacket pockets and started walking, letting his feet guide him down familiar streets.

The city was just waking up, with joggers, dog walkers, and coffee-carrying commuters filling the sidewalks.

As he walked, he couldn't help but notice how alive everything felt. Birds chirped in the trees, cars honked in the distance, and the smell of fresh bread wafted from a nearby bakery. He'd lived here for years but had never taken the time to appreciate these little details.

The app buzzed after 20 minutes, declaring the task complete. Alex checked the reward: +1 Health.

"Not bad for a stroll," he said to himself.

When Alex returned home, Dylan was sprawled on the couch, still in his pajamas but now fully awake.

"You're back already? That was fast," Dylan said, flipping through channels on the TV.

"It was only 20 minutes," Alex replied, heading to the kitchen for water.

"So what's next on the self-improvement agenda?" Dylan asked.

Alex checked the app. [Next Quest: Declutter your living space.]

He groaned. "It wants me to clean again."

Dylan laughed. "Your apartment does look like a thrift store exploded in here. Maybe the app's onto something."

"Very funny," Alex said, eyeing the pile of clothes on the floor and the stack of old magazines on the coffee table. "Fine. Let's do this."

Cleaning wasn't exactly Alex's forte, but he was determined to tackle the task head-on. He started with the easiest part: the clothes.

Most of them were either unworn or hadn't been touched in years, so he decided to donate anything he didn't see himself using in the next month.

Dylan, of course, turned the whole thing into a game. "This shirt? Keep or toss?" he asked, holding up a hideous lime-green polo.

"Toss," Alex said without hesitation.

"Bold choice," Dylan said, tossing it into the donation pile. "What about these shoes? They scream 'midlife crisis.'"

"Keep. They're comfortable," Alex said defensively.

"Comfort over style? Who are you, and what have you done with my friend?" Dylan teased.

By the time they were done, Alex's apartment looked significantly less cluttered. The floor was visible, the shelves were organized, and the donation pile was impressive.

The app buzzed: "Task Complete: +1 Creativity."

"Creativity?" Alex said, confused. "How does cleaning make me more creative?"

"Maybe it's because you had to imagine your life without all that junk," Dylan said with a grin.

"Or maybe the app is just making this stuff up," Alex muttered, though he couldn't deny the small sense of accomplishment he felt.

The next quest popped up almost immediately: [Challenge yourself by trying something new: Attend a yoga class.]

Alex stared at the screen in horror. "Yoga? Seriously?"

Dylan burst out laughing. "Oh, this I have to see."

"Do I look like someone who does yoga?" Alex asked, gesturing at his lanky frame.

"No, which is exactly why you should do it," Dylan said. "Come on, I'll go with you. We'll make a day of it."

"Fine," Alex said reluctantly. "But if I embarrass myself, I'm blaming you."

The yoga studio was intimidating, to say the least. It smelled like lavender and was filled with people who looked like they stepped out of a fitness magazine. Alex felt out of place before the class even started.

"Relax," Dylan said, patting his shoulder. "Just follow along and try not to fall over."

The instructor, a cheerful woman named Zoe, greeted them warmly and assured Alex that beginners were welcome.

The class started off easy enough with basic stretches, but things quickly escalated.

Poses like "Downward Dog" and "Warrior II" had Alex wobbling like a newborn giraffe. Dylan, naturally, was doing just fine, much to Alex's annoyance.

"Breathe through it," Zoe said, noticing Alex's struggle. "It's not about perfection; it's about progress."

By the end of the session, Alex was drenched in sweat and his muscles ached in ways he didn't know they could.

"Well?" Dylan asked as they rolled up their mats.

"I feel like I just went through boot camp," Alex said.

"But you survived," Dylan said with a grin.

The app buzzed: "Task Complete: +1 Dexterity and +1 Health."

Back home, Alex collapsed onto the couch, exhausted but oddly satisfied.

"You know," he said to Dylan, "this whole thing isn't as bad as I thought it would be."

"See? I told you," Dylan said, tossing him a bottle of water. "You're turning into a whole new person."

Alex laughed. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves. I've still got a long way to go."
