Chereads / Quest App: From Sloth to Sage / Chapter 8 - The Unexpected Encounter

Chapter 8 - The Unexpected Encounter

Alex stretched his arms above his head as he strolled through the dimly lit streets, the faint hum of the city filling the air.

It had been another chaotic day with the Quest App, and while he appreciated the progress, he couldn't shake the feeling of exhaustion creeping in.

"Explore the Unknown," he muttered, staring at the glowing directive on his phone.

"What's that supposed to mean? Could've just said 'go outside,' but no, it has to sound all mystical."

He stuffed the phone back into his pocket and continued walking aimlessly, hoping the app would somehow nudge him toward whatever it wanted him to find.

His feet led him to an unfamiliar part of the city—a quiet stretch of tree-lined streets dotted with small shops and cafes, most of them closed for the night.

The glow of a neon sign caught his attention. A tiny diner with a retro aesthetic stood at the corner, its lights flickering slightly.

Feeling a sudden pang of hunger, Alex pushed open the door, the bell above jingling softly.

The diner was nearly empty except for a lone figure sitting at the counter. The man looked to be in his mid-thirties, dressed casually in a leather jacket and jeans.

There was nothing particularly remarkable about him—no flashy aura, no golden glow—but something about his presence felt heavy, like he commanded the room without even trying.

Alex slid into a booth, trying not to stare. The man seemed oblivious to him, focused instead on his plate of fries and a thick shake.

"Welcome, hon. What can I get for you?" The waitress, a middle-aged woman with a warm smile, handed Alex a menu.

"Uh, just a coffee for now," Alex said. "Thanks."

As she walked away, Alex couldn't help but glance at his phone again.

The Quest App remained unchanged, the same cryptic prompt staring back at him. He sighed and set the phone on the table, drumming his fingers against the edge.

"Looking for answers?" a deep voice said, startling Alex.

He looked up to see the man from the counter standing beside his booth, holding his plate of fries.

Without waiting for an invitation, the man slid into the seat across from him.

"Uh, can I help you?" Alex asked, immediately wary.

"Maybe," the man said, popping a fry into his mouth.

"But I think I'm the one who can help you."

Alex frowned. "Do I know you?"

"Not yet," the man said, smirking. "But I know you, Alex."

Alex froze, his mind racing. "How do you know my name?"

The man leaned back, gesturing casually. "Relax. You're not exactly hard to spot. That app you're using? It has a way of leaving… traces."

Alex's heart pounded. "You… have it too?"

"Had it," the man corrected. "A long time ago."

Alex blinked. "Had? What do you mean, 'had'? You can get rid of it?"

The man chuckled. "Not quite. Let's just say I outgrew it. Reached a point where I didn't need its guidance anymore."

Alex stared at him, struggling to process the revelation. "So, you're saying you're like… what? A graduate of the Quest App Academy?"

"Something like that." The man smiled, but there was a hint of pride in his expression.

"And before you ask, no, I'm not here to give you a pep talk or recruit you into some secret club. This is just a coincidence."

Alex narrowed his eyes. "You expect me to believe that? You just happened to run into me while I was out 'exploring the unknown'?"

The man shrugged. "Believe what you want. I was here first. You're the one who wandered in."

Before Alex could respond, the man reached across the table and grabbed Alex's phone.

"Hey, what are you—"

"Relax," the man said, holding up the phone. "I'm not stealing it. Just making a point."

With a flick of his wrist, he tossed the phone into the air. For a brief moment, it hung suspended, spinning slowly.

Then, to Alex's shock, it froze midair, surrounded by a faint golden glow.

"What the…" Alex stared, his jaw dropping.

The man grinned. "This? This is what happens when you stop playing by the app's rules and start bending them."

With a snap of his fingers, the phone floated gently back into Alex's hand.

"That's… insane," Alex said, his voice barely above a whisper.

"It's just the beginning," the man said. "The app is a tool, but it's not the endgame. If you push yourself far enough, you'll realize it's just a stepping stone."

Alex swallowed hard, his mind racing with possibilities. "So, you're like… superhuman now?"

"Something like that," the man said, finishing the last of his fries.

"But it's not all sunshine and rainbows. There's a price to pay for power, Alex. The app doesn't give you anything for free."

Alex frowned. "What kind of price?"

The man's expression darkened slightly.

"That's for you to figure out. But trust me, you'll know it when it comes."

He stood, tossing a few bills onto the table.

"Consider this a friendly heads-up. Don't get too comfortable with where you are now. The real challenges haven't even started yet."

Before Alex could say anything, the man turned and walked out of the diner, leaving Alex alone with his thoughts.

His phone buzzed again. He looked down to see a new notification from the Quest App:

"Uncover your potential."
