The tension between the two friends ever since the discovery was very evident. Eva sat on her bed, staring blankly at the wall. The events of the previous day replayed in her mind like a broken record. She had tried to shake off the image of Sade and Theo, but it lingered on, eating at her insides.
Why would she do something like that? She was better than that.
She thought.
Just then, a knock on the door shook her from her thoughts.
"Eva, can we talk?" Sade said in a muffled voice.
Eva hesitated. She knew she had been avoiding her since then. But Sade's persistence was too demanding. Left with no other choice than to oblige her friend, she opened the door.
Sade stood there, her eyes looking like she cried the balls out. The sight made Eva uncomfortable, but she quickly reminded herself against displaying any signs of sympathy.
"What do you want this time?" She asked, her tone was harsher than she'd intended for it to be.
"I want to talk about what happened." Sade replied, stepping into the room without waiting for an invitation. "You've been avoiding me ever since, and it's eating me up!"
"I haven't been avoiding you, Sade." Eva shot back defensively. "I just... needed some space."
"Space? Or are you just too ashamed to face me?" Sade cried out, her voice building gradually. "You caught Theo and I having sex, and now you're acting like I'm some kind of monster."
"Stop making it seem so simple, Sade. Theo is your ex, and you're very much aware he's still with that girl. How do you think she'll feel when she finds out, huh? How disappointing!"
"You're hanging out with your ex who treated you like garbage!" Sade cut in, "Yet you're the one to talk about bad decisions? What about all those guys you've been hanging out with, huh?— Dunsin and Gates? How do you think they'll feel when they find out you've been stringing them along?"
"That's different! I'm not the one who—"
"Who what? Made a mistake? You think I wanted this to happen? You think I planned to be caught in that situation?" She retorted.
Eva turned away, too upset to meet her gaze.
"I just... I can't believe you would do that with him," she murmured. "To think that you'd talk about my situation like this? No, Sade, I won't stand here and watch you compare what I have going on with this little web of deceit of yours. You and I are completely opposite!" Eva challenged.
"Believe it! And maybe you should take a good look at yourself in the mirror and think twice before judging me." Sade stepped closer, "You've been out with Gates, Dunsin, and God knows who else, pretending everything is fine while you're still hung up on your toxic ex!" She yelled.
"That's not fair!" Eva said, finally meeting her gaze. "I've moved on from him, and you know it. You can go ahead and say whatever you want to, if it makes you feel any better, but you know what I'm saying is true. You messed up big time, Sade."
"No, you think I'm the only one making mistakes? You've been hiding behind your 'perfect' facade while pushing me away!"
The silence that followed was unmistakable, with unspoken words and unresolved feelings.
Eva tried to think about Sade's accusations. She knew It was true— she had been distant since the incident, but it felt easier to avoid confrontation than face the reality of what had happened.
"I just don't understand how you could do something like that," Eva finally said, "I know you're still hung up on Theo, but it's time to let go. Think about his new girlfriend, how would you feel if you were in her shoes?"
Sade's expression softened for a moment.
"He was mine before she came into the picture unexpectedly, and I don't exactly feel sorry for her. In fact, he assured me that he was going to break up with her… I don't get why you're acting so innocent when you're not, Eva. You've made bad choices too."
"I never said I was perfect, but at least I can see for myself how different my poor choices are from yours. One thing's for sure— I hold myself accountable for my actions, but I can't say the same for you!"
"No, but you act like it." Sade shot back, "You act like I'm some kind of disgrace because I made a mistake while ignoring your own flaws."
"Maybe I thought we were better than this!" Eva yelled.
"Better than making mistakes? Because newsflash- everyone makes them!" Sade replied.
"You know what? I'm done here. I can no longer tolerate this foolishness. Have your fantastical fun time with Theo, and I hope you get caught while at it." Eva said, leaving the room and banging the door so hard at her.
"Stop pretending, Eva, and let's be real with each other for once!" Sade trailed her outside, speaking at the top of her voice.
Who the hell does she think she is, huh? Judging me like she's some saint!
Sade lay in the bed, allowing her intrusive thoughts devour her. The event of the day escalated beyond comprehension. She had earlier intended on having a decent conversation, before she let her emotions get the best of her.
While Eva on the other hand, took a walk, hoping it would help clear her head. The confrontation between them overwhelmed her and it made her wonder what their relationship, moving forward, would be like.
As she returned to the room, about two hours later, she found Sade sitting on the sofa. The two friends stared at each other for a moment in silence, allowing their emotions to settle before speaking again.
"I'm sorry for how I reacted," Eva said quietly, "I should have tried listening instead of shutting you out."
Sade nodded in understanding.
"And I'm sorry for putting you in such an awkward position with Theo."
As they spoke openly for the first time since the incident, they could feel their bodies relaxed. They began to share their fears and insecurities— about recent happenings and their relationships.
"I guess we both have our demons." Eva said after a while.
"Yeah." Sade agreed with a smile. "But maybe we can face them together?"
Eva smiled back, feeling positive at the thought of repairing their friendship.
"Together sounds good."
The two friends finally hugged it out.
"So, what do you intend to do now? I mean, will you keep seeing him?" Eva asked, with sincerity in her eyes.
Sade sighed. The thought of the question hurt her fragile heart, but she knew she had to do the right thing.
"No." She began, "I think it'll be best to end things with him once and for all. I deserve someone better and you're right…what I'm doing to that poor girl is unfair and I do hope he gets caught."
Eva smiled at her friend, feeling good hearing her say all that. She knew it was hard for Sade, but it definitely felt like the right thing to do.
"I love you, Sade. And I'll support your decision every step of the way." She kissed her cheek…
