Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: The Road to the Sanctum

The forest seemed endless, its ancient trees stretching high into the heavens as if trying to touch the clouds. Sunlight filtered through the canopy in thin streams, painting patterns of gold and green on the forest floor. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and moss, the sound of birds and insects echoing faintly in the distance.

Kazuya walked at the front of the group, his steps deliberate and quiet, as his sharp eyes scanned their surroundings. Behind him were Lyriana, her bow slung across her shoulder, and Kaelith, who stayed a few paces back, their sword ready at a moment's notice.

"We're close," Lyriana said, her voice breaking the silence. She pointed ahead to where the trees began to thin. "Beyond this forest lies the Sanctum of Echoes. We should be there by nightfall if we keep this pace."

Kazuya nodded, his gaze focused. "Good. We need to find that artifact before Zaryth's forces get there."

Kaelith groaned softly as they ducked beneath a low-hanging branch. "We've been walking for hours, Kazuya. I know you don't feel exhaustion, but some of us still need breaks."

Kazuya slowed his steps, glancing over his shoulder. "Fine. Ten minutes. But no more."

The group came to a small clearing where the grass was soft and the sunlight warm. Lyriana sat on a fallen log, pulling out her canteen and taking a long drink. Kaelith slumped down with a huff, unsheathing their sword to inspect its blade.

Kazuya remained standing, his body still, but his mind racing. He could feel it—something pulling at him, like an invisible thread tugging him forward. This "Sanctum of Echoes" wasn't just another ruin; it held power. He could sense it.

Lyriana tilted her head, watching him curiously. "You're thinking too hard again."

Kazuya looked at her, startled from his thoughts. "Huh?"

She smirked faintly. "Your face gives you away. You're tense. What's bothering you?"

He paused before answering, his voice low. "It's just… this power I've gained. The shadows. They feel like they're alive. Like they want something from me."

Kaelith, overhearing, looked up with a furrowed brow. "Dark powers always come with strings attached. You need to be careful, Kazuya."

"I am careful," Kazuya replied, his tone firm. "This power is mine to control, not the other way around. I won't let it consume me."

Kaelith shrugged, though their expression remained skeptical. "Just don't forget that power can change a person. I've seen it happen before."

Lyriana interjected before the conversation could sour. "Enough, both of you. Arguing won't help us reach the Sanctum any faster."

Kazuya turned away, his jaw tight. Despite his confidence, a seed of doubt had been planted. What if Kaelith was right? What if the shadows have their own will?

The Whispering Valley

After the brief rest, they pressed on. By late afternoon, they reached the edge of the forest. The trees gave way to a steep, rocky slope leading down into a wide valley cloaked in mist. At the far end, nestled between jagged cliffs, stood the faint outline of the Sanctum of Echoes—an ancient structure built of dark stone, its spires clawing at the sky like skeletal fingers.

"There it is," Lyriana said, her voice soft with awe. "The Sanctum."

Kaelith squinted. "Looks abandoned. But places like that always attract trouble."

Kazuya narrowed his eyes, his instincts screaming at him that something wasn't right. The mist hung unnaturally thick, swirling as if alive, and the very air seemed heavier.

"Stay sharp," Kazuya warned. "We're not alone here."

The group carefully descended into the valley, moving across uneven terrain littered with crumbling stone and twisted roots. With every step, the mist seemed to close in tighter, muffling sound and obscuring their vision.

Suddenly, Kazuya froze. A chill ran down his spine, and he could feel it—eyes watching them.

"Kazuya?" Lyriana asked, sensing his unease.

"Something's coming," he said quietly. His hand moved instinctively to the hilt of his sword. "Get ready."

The ground beneath their feet trembled. Without warning, skeletal warriors burst from the earth, their hollow eye sockets glowing with an unnatural green light. Rusted armor clung to their bodies, and in their bony hands, they wielded weapons that pulsed with dark energy.

"It's an ambush!" Kaelith shouted, already drawing their sword.

Lyriana leapt back, loosing an arrow that pierced through one skeleton's skull, shattering it instantly. "They're everywhere!"

Kazuya's instincts kicked in. His body moved like lightning as he activated Dash, his form blurring forward. In a single strike, he cleaved through three skeletons, their bones collapsing into dust.

But more kept rising. For every one they felled, two more clawed their way out of the ground.

"This is no ordinary magic," Lyriana called out, backing up to fire another arrow. "Someone's controlling them!"

Kazuya gritted his teeth, his sword a blur of motion as he cut through the horde. The shadows coiled around his feet, responding to his will, lashing out like living tendrils to crush enemies from afar.

"Whoever's behind this is close," Kazuya muttered. "I can feel it."

As if in answer, a chilling laugh echoed through the mist. The skeletal warriors paused, their glowing eyes turning in unison toward the cliffs above.

A figure emerged from the fog, standing atop a crumbling stone pillar. Cloaked in black, their face obscured, they held a staff carved with sinister runes that pulsed with dark light.

"Welcome, travelers," the figure called out, their voice dripping with malice. "I am Mirath, guardian of this valley. My master Zaryth knew you would come, and I have waited to greet you properly."

Kaelith scowled. "Zaryth's minion. I should've known."

Mirath raised the staff, and the skeletal warriors surged forward once more, their hollow cries echoing through the valley.

Lyriana fired a volley of arrows, shouting to Kazuya. "Kazuya! Go! We'll hold them off—take him down!"

Kazuya's eyes narrowed. Without hesitation, he activated Dash, his body vanishing in a blur. He reappeared on the stone pillar, mere feet from Mirath, who stumbled back in surprise.

"You're fast," Mirath sneered, regaining composure. "But speed alone won't save you."

"Let's find out," Kazuya said coldly, raising his sword.

The final battle for the valley had begun.
