Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: The Sanctum Beckons

The remnants of battle faded behind them as Kazuya, Lyriana, and Kaelith made their way through the narrow, winding pass that led to the Sanctum of Echoes. The oppressive quiet of the valley weighed heavily on them, a stark contrast to the chaos they had left behind.

Ahead, the Sanctum loomed—a towering structure carved into the face of a mountain, its jagged spires twisting unnaturally, as if defying the laws of nature. Faint whispers seemed to drift from its shadowy depths, carrying with them an unshakable sense of dread.

Kaelith scowled, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. "I don't like this place. Feels like the shadows are alive, watching us."

Lyriana nodded, her sharp eyes scanning the path ahead. "The Sanctum is known to play tricks on the mind. It's said that even the bravest warriors lose themselves in its halls."

Kazuya remained silent, his gaze fixed on the structure. Despite the growing tension, his determination burned brighter than ever. He could feel it—the pull of something powerful within the Sanctum. Whatever Mirath had been trying to protect, it was here, waiting for them.

The Approach

As they neared the Sanctum's entrance, a massive archway carved with cryptic runes came into view. The runes glowed faintly, pulsing with an otherworldly light that seemed to respond to their presence.

"This is no ordinary magic," Lyriana murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. She placed a hand on the stone, her fingers tracing the runes. "These markings… they're ancient. Older than the empire itself."

Kaelith frowned. "What does it say?"

Lyriana hesitated, her brow furrowed. "It's a warning. 'Beyond these gates lies the Echo of Eternity. To enter is to risk your soul.'"

Kaelith snorted, though unease flickered in his eyes. "Great. Sounds like a welcoming place."

Kazuya stepped forward, his voice steady. "We don't have a choice. Whatever lies inside, we need to face it."

The others exchanged a glance before nodding.

With a deep breath, Kazuya reached out and pushed against the stone doors. They groaned in protest before slowly creaking open, revealing a dark, cavernous interior.

The Hall of Reflections

The air inside the Sanctum was cold and heavy, carrying the scent of ancient stone and decay. The faint glow of the runes on the walls cast eerie shadows that seemed to shift and flicker on their own.

As they ventured deeper, the path opened into a vast chamber. Mirrors lined the walls, their surfaces cracked and warped. Each reflected not just their images but distorted versions of themselves—twisted, darker.

Lyriana shivered, her hand tightening around her bow. "This place… it's alive."

Kaelith's reflection sneered back at him, eyes burning with hatred. "I don't like this. It's messing with our heads."

Kazuya stopped in the center of the room, his reflection staring back at him. Unlike the others, his reflection was calm, yet its eyes seemed to pierce through him, as though it knew his every thought.

"What is this place?" he muttered, his voice echoing unnaturally.

Lyriana knelt beside one of the mirrors, studying the runes etched into its frame. "These mirrors… they're enchanted. They show more than just our reflections. They reveal the darkness we try to hide."

As if on cue, the reflections began to move, stepping out of the mirrors. Each one shimmered like a wisp of smoke, solidifying into shadowy versions of the trio.

Kaelith drew his sword, his jaw tightening. "Great. Just what we needed—evil clones."

The shadowy Kaelith grinned, its movements eerily fluid as it raised an identical blade. "Are you sure I'm the evil one?" it hissed, its voice a distorted echo.

Lyriana's reflection notched an arrow, its eyes glowing with malevolence. "You'll never be good enough," it taunted, its voice dripping with venom.

Kazuya's shadow said nothing, but its presence was heavier, darker. It stood still, watching him with an intensity that sent a chill down his spine.

The Battle Within

The shadow clones attacked without warning, their movements swift and precise. Kaelith met his double's blade with a loud clang, sparks flying as the two clashed.

Lyriana loosed an arrow at her reflection, but the shadow caught it midair, snapping it in half before launching its own volley. Lyriana rolled to the side, her eyes narrowed as she reached for another arrow.

Kazuya stood face-to-face with his shadow, his grip tightening on his sword. The shadow moved first, its blade slicing through the air with blinding speed.

"Dash."

Kazuya evaded the strike, countering with a powerful swing that forced the shadow back. But the clone recovered quickly, its movements mirroring his own perfectly.

Every strike, every dodge—it was as if Kazuya were fighting himself.

"Is this all you've got?" the shadow sneered, its voice low and taunting. "You think you're strong, but you're weak. You rely on your power, but deep down, you're still that scared little boy who couldn't save anyone."

The words struck a nerve, but Kazuya gritted his teeth, refusing to let the shadow's taunts distract him.

"I've come too far to let you get into my head," he said, his voice steady. "You're just a fragment of the past. And I've already moved beyond that."

With a surge of energy, Kazuya launched himself forward, his blade glowing with raw power. The shadow raised its sword to block, but Kazuya's strike shattered it, the impact sending the clone crashing into the nearest mirror.

The shadow dissolved into smoke, leaving only Kazuya standing amidst the broken shards.

Breaking the Illusion

Kaelith and Lyriana were still locked in battle with their reflections, each struggling to gain the upper hand.

Kazuya took a deep breath, his gaze sweeping over the chamber. He focused on the runes etched into the mirrors, their faint glow pulsing in rhythm with the shadows' movements.

"This room isn't real," he realized. "It's feeding off our doubts, our fears."

He raised his sword, channeling his energy into the blade. The light radiated outward, filling the chamber with a brilliant glow that shattered the remaining mirrors.

The shadows let out an ear-piercing screech before disintegrating into nothingness.

Kaelith and Lyriana stumbled back, their breaths ragged as they looked around the now-empty chamber.

"What… just happened?" Kaelith asked, his voice shaken.

Kazuya sheathed his sword, his expression calm but resolute. "This place tests more than just strength. If we're going to survive, we need to keep our minds clear. No doubts. No fear."

Lyriana nodded, though her hands still trembled slightly. "The Sanctum won't make this easy for us. This was only the beginning."

Kazuya looked toward the far end of the chamber, where another set of doors awaited. The faint whispers were louder now, beckoning them deeper into the Sanctum.

"Then we keep moving," he said.

Without another word, the trio pressed forward, leaving the shattered Hall of Reflections behind.
