Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The Monster's Reckoning

Kazuya's heart pounded in his chest, but his mind was clear. Every instinct he had honed over the past few weeks kicked in, sharpening his focus as he surveyed the creature before them. It was a twisted abomination, its body an unholy mix of humanoid and reptilian features. Its claws were long and curved, glistening with a dark sheen, and its eyes glowed with an unsettling intelligence that sent a chill down Kazuya's spine.

The villagers, who were huddled together, looked terrified—helpless in the face of this monstrous creature. It had them cornered, their backs pressed against a jagged rock face. The fear in their eyes was palpable, but there was no room to escape. The creature advanced on them slowly, savoring the moment, like a predator toying with its prey.

Kazuya's grip tightened around the hilt of his weapon. He could feel the surge of power within him, a force that had grown within his body ever since his arrival in this world. His stats were high—speed, strength, durability—but it was the sheer determination in his heart that made the difference. He wasn't going to let these people die.

Lyriana stood beside him, her face as focused as his. She nocked an arrow to her bow, her eyes never leaving the creature. It was clear from her stance that she was ready to attack, but they needed a plan. Rushing in without thinking would be a mistake—they had to move as one.

"We need to distract it," Lyriana said softly, her voice barely above a whisper.

Kazuya nodded. He had already started thinking ahead. The creature had long claws that could tear through stone, and its speed was deceptively quick for its size. A direct confrontation would be dangerous. They needed to use the terrain to their advantage.

"Let me get its attention," Kazuya suggested. "You get the villagers to safety. I'll hold it off."

Lyriana hesitated, then gave him a sharp nod. "Just don't do anything reckless."

Kazuya gave her a brief grin. "When have I ever done anything reckless?"

Lyriana didn't respond, but he could see the faintest trace of a smile on her lips.

He didn't wait for another moment. With a burst of speed, Kazuya dashed forward, moving faster than the creature could track. The monster snarled, its eyes narrowing as it twisted its head to face him.

Before it could fully react, Kazuya closed the distance, his body already in motion. With a single swipe, he slashed his blade through the air, the steel biting into the creature's thick hide. The monster roared, more in surprise than pain, and swung its claws down in retaliation.

Kazuya's reflexes were faster. He ducked beneath the swipe, feeling the wind from the claws pass just inches above him. He didn't stop moving. He sprinted around the creature, staying just out of reach of its claws while waiting for the perfect opening.

His body felt lighter than ever before. His stats—especially his speed—were almost limitless. He moved with the grace of a shadow, every step calculated, every breath in perfect rhythm with his movements. The creature couldn't keep up.

"Over here!" Kazuya shouted, trying to provoke it further.

The creature snarled and turned, its sharp teeth gleaming in the dying light. It leapt toward him, its claws outstretched, but Kazuya was already gone. He dashed to the side, moving so quickly that the creature's swipe only met air. He could feel the adrenaline coursing through his veins, his heart racing with the thrill of the fight.

Lyriana, meanwhile, had already started ushering the villagers to safety. She moved with quick, efficient precision, her elven agility making her seem almost invisible as she helped them to a nearby cave entrance. It was hidden, well-concealed from the view of the creature, and she had no doubt it would be their safest haven for now.

Kazuya, however, wasn't about to let the monster have free rein. He wasn't just going to play the role of a distraction. He wanted to bring it down.

The creature swung again, its claws scraping against the stone beneath it as it tried to land a solid blow. Kazuya leapt to the side, narrowly avoiding the attack, and then, with a surge of energy, he charged forward.

He couldn't just wear it down. Not with the amount of destruction it had caused in the village. He needed to end it, and he needed to end it fast.

His mind shifted into battle mode, the world around him blurring as he focused solely on the creature. He was faster than it, stronger than it, but it wasn't just brute force that would win this fight. He needed precision.

With a single leap, Kazuya closed the distance and slashed upward with his weapon. The blade met its target—a soft spot on the creature's underbelly. It screeched in agony, stumbling back as blood sprayed from the wound. Kazuya didn't give it a chance to recover.

He followed up with another strike, quicker this time, hitting the monster's exposed side. The creature howled, its claws flailing wildly, but Kazuya was already moving again, his next attack already in motion. He slashed at its throat, the blade slicing through the tough hide with ease.

The creature let out one final, blood-curdling roar before it collapsed, its body going limp as it hit the ground with a heavy thud.

Kazuya stood over the fallen creature, panting but unscathed. His heart still raced from the fight, the adrenaline still flooding his system. But he didn't have time to revel in his victory. He turned quickly, looking toward Lyriana.

"Is everyone safe?" he asked.

Lyriana emerged from the cave with the last of the villagers. They were shaken, their faces pale with fear, but they were alive.

"They're safe," Lyriana said, her voice steady, but there was a glint of something—respect—in her eyes as she looked at Kazuya. "You did it."

Kazuya gave her a wry grin. "It wasn't that hard."

Lyriana didn't respond, but there was no mistaking the warmth in her gaze. She respected him, and more than that, she trusted him. And that trust was something Kazuya valued more than anything.

"Let's get them to safety," Kazuya said, motioning toward the cave. "We need to figure out what this thing was—and why it's here."

Lyriana nodded, and together, they led the villagers into the cave, leaving the remains of the creature behind. Kazuya's mind was already racing. This was only the beginning. The world was full of monsters, but now, he was ready. Ready for whatever the future held.

And whatever it was, he was going to face it head-on.
