Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: The Herald’s Warning

The trio stepped out of the ruined temple, the morning sun slicing through the dissipating mist. The battle with Morvas still lingered in their minds, his parting words echoing like an ominous drumbeat: The darkness will consume you all.

Kazuya glanced at Lyriana, who walked a few paces ahead, her expression tight with worry. Solmara hovered silently behind them, her glowing form casting faint shadows across the forest floor.

"We're not done with him, are we?" Kazuya asked, breaking the tense silence.

Lyriana shook her head without turning around. "No. Morvas won't stop until he fulfills whatever twisted plans the shadow has for this world."

Solmara spoke, her voice calm but resolute. "Morvas is a herald, a harbinger of the shadow's will. Where he appears, corruption festers. His retreat means little; he is likely regrouping to strike again. And next time, he will not be alone."

Kazuya tightened his grip on his sword hilt. "Then we'll be ready for him. Whatever it takes."

Solmara's glowing eyes turned to Kazuya, her expression unreadable. "You are strong, Kazuya Hiyotoshi, but strength alone cannot win this war. The shadow has allies, and its roots run deep. To defeat it, you must grow beyond mere power."

Kazuya frowned. "What do you mean?"

"You must understand the essence of the shadow," Solmara explained. "It does not seek destruction for its own sake. It thrives on despair, division, and fear. If you are to overcome it, you must unite this fractured world."

Lyriana turned, her brow furrowed. "Unite the world? That's… impossible. The elves, dwarves, beastmen, and humans barely tolerate each other. Some outright hate one another."

Kazuya sighed. "Sounds like my world wasn't much different. But if unity is what we need to stop this, then I'll do it."

Solmara's faint smile returned. "Spoken like one chosen by the light. But beware, Kazuya—the shadow's greatest weapon is not brute force. It will seek to turn your allies against you, to exploit your doubts and fears. Only by standing firm in your convictions can you hope to prevail."

As Solmara's words sank in, the forest ahead opened into a small village nestled in a valley. Smoke rose from chimneys, and the distant hum of life reached their ears—a stark contrast to the desolation of the temple.

"Finally," Lyriana muttered. "A place to rest."

Kazuya followed her gaze, but his instincts flared with unease. Something felt… off.

"Does it look a little too quiet to you?" he asked, his hand hovering near his sword.

Lyriana's ears twitched, and she frowned. "Now that you mention it…"

The trio entered the village cautiously. The streets were empty, and the air was heavy with an unnatural stillness. Doors hung ajar, and half-eaten meals sat abandoned on tables.

"This isn't right," Lyriana whispered, her bow drawn. "Where is everyone?"

Kazuya activated Analyze, scanning the area for signs of life. His screen lit up with faint traces of mana, but something about the readings made his chest tighten.

"They're here," he said, his voice low. "But it's like their life force is… distorted."

Solmara raised her hand, and a soft glow spread across the village. The light illuminated faint black tendrils snaking along the ground, leading to the center of the village square.

At the heart of the square stood a massive tree, its branches twisted unnaturally. Black ichor dripped from its bark, pooling at its roots. The tendrils of shadow converged there, pulsating like a living thing.

"The corruption," Solmara said, her voice cold. "It has taken root here."

Kazuya drew his sword. "Then let's cut it out."

Before anyone could respond, the ichor shifted, and figures began to emerge from the shadows—villagers, their eyes black and their movements jerky. They surrounded the trio, their expressions vacant but hostile.

Lyriana gasped. "The villagers… they've been corrupted!"

Kazuya gritted his teeth. "We can't hurt them. There has to be a way to break the corruption without killing them."

Solmara stepped forward, her light intensifying. "Leave that to me. Protect me while I channel my energy."

Kazuya and Lyriana nodded, forming a defensive line in front of Solmara. The corrupted villagers lurched forward, their movements unnatural but fast.

Kazuya activated Dash, closing the distance between himself and the first wave of attackers. His enhanced speed allowed him to dodge their wild strikes, using the flat of his blade to knock them back without causing serious harm.

Lyriana fired arrows laced with light magic, each shot aimed to disable rather than kill. Her precision kept the villagers at bay, but their sheer numbers began to overwhelm them.

Solmara knelt, her hands glowing as she chanted softly. A circle of radiant energy spread outward, purging the tendrils of shadow it touched. But the process was slow, and the corruption fought back, sending waves of dark energy toward her.

"Solmara, hurry up!" Lyriana shouted, loosing another volley of arrows.

"I need more time!" Solmara replied, her voice strained.

Kazuya gritted his teeth, cutting down another wave of attackers. His stamina was infinite, but the sheer number of enemies was wearing on his focus.

Just as the situation seemed dire, Solmara's light flared brighter than ever. The circle expanded rapidly, engulfing the entire village in its radiance.

The corrupted villagers froze, their blackened eyes clearing as the shadows dissolved. The ichor on the tree evaporated, leaving behind only the twisted bark.

When the light faded, the villagers collapsed, unconscious but alive.

Kazuya lowered his sword, breathing heavily. "Is it over?"

"For now," Solmara said, standing shakily. "But this is only a small victory. The corruption will return unless we destroy its source."

Lyriana approached the tree, her expression grim. "This isn't natural. The shadow planted this here deliberately. It's spreading its influence."

Kazuya nodded. "Then we'll stop it at the source. Whatever it takes."

Solmara placed a hand on his shoulder. "You have the strength to do so, Kazuya. But the road ahead will test you in ways you cannot yet imagine."

Kazuya met her gaze, determination burning in his eyes. "Let it try. I'm not backing down."

As the villagers began to stir, the trio turned their attention to the horizon, where dark clouds loomed. The fight against the shadow was far from over, but Kazuya knew one thing for certain: he would not falter.
