I open the door and let myself in to the girl's room and immediately I get hit with immense guilt as the first thing I see is her left leg suspended in the air with braces on her legs. I mediately shut the door quietly as possible and brace myself for what was going to happen.
"Hello I'm Devin, I know I'm the last person you want to see right now and I am really sorry for what I've put you through but you have to know it was really an accident and I swore to your mother that ill help out in any thing you need till you get better "I say the speech I've been reciting in my head for the past few days all in one breath. She looks up at me with a scowl on her face. She looks a bit familiar but I can't quite put my finger on it. She opens her mouth to say something but only closes it again.
"Is that all you have to say after seeing me in this condition? "She asks in an exasperated tone while looking up and down at me.
"of course, I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am, really I take full accountability for everything and I've already discussed with your mum regarding the situation" I say pleadingly to ease the tension I can already feel building.
"So, cause you think you've probably forced my mom not to say anything to the police cause you're some kind of big shot makes you think you can get away with everything with an apology and taking care of my of my hospital bills, eh?" she says with so much venom in her voce that makes me think like I'm under intense pressure Infront of a client that I'm trying to close a deal with.
"No, I didn't force your mum to do anything, we just agreed to come to an agreement regarding the incident and we didn't see the need for the police to be involved, I'm actually surprised she hasn't briefed you on the what we've discussed about but I'm sure she had her reasons and- "before I could finish my sentence, she cuts me off abruptly by laughing which sent chills to my bone.
"You might have cut a deal with my mum that seeing she's a very lenient person but I still haven't agreed to anything when I haven't even asked the right questions" she asks while to get up to adjust her pillow to see me better.
"Please you can ask anything, I'll answer truthfully" I say to reassure her.
"That day, were you distracted on your phone while driving or where you drunk cause there's no way you didn't see me crossing the road"
"No, I wasn't distracted I was um- "she cuts me off again
"So, you were drunk, I knew it!"
" no I wasn't you must be mistaken"
"What a load of bull, I smelt the booze on you before I fell unconscious so don't try to even lie to me!"
"No that's not true, it must have been my cologne and don't forget the fact you hit your head pretty hard"
"Are you trying gaslight me right now?"
"I'm not trying to do anything here" I say desperately trying to reduce the tension in the room.
"So, let's say you weren't driving while drunk, why the hell were you speeding in a 40km/h zone near freaking school?"
"I miscalculated because I was thought it was a short cut and that the street was empty cause it was past school hours"
"So, because of your foolish miscalculation I am now in stuck in bed with a broken leg and to top it all if I just lost my chance to run for my state so thanks a lot to your 'miscalculations' my foot"
"I know there's little I can do to help your situation, If I could go back in time, I would do anything in my power to prevent this from happening, it was an honest accident that could've happened to anyone, I'm sorry once again"
"Sorry isn't going to get my leg fixed so it's not going to cut it"
"But you can tell me anything you want to help you recuperate and ill try my very best to achieve it if its within my means"
"Just leave, I'm sure you've already discussed it with my mum"
"We didn't discuss everything"
"Well, you can go do it later with her, I'm tired of this conversation, so can you leave already?"
"Yes, yes I can ill leave you to rest and we'll continue our conversation later when you're a bit more well rested" and with that I bow my head a little to refrain from meeting her eyes and head out the door.
Once I'm out I set out to find her mother as she told me she was going to get s cup of coffee from the cafeteria. She even offered to bring me one but I declined, I has no idea why she was being so nice to the person who put her child in the hospital but then again, I never really understood people.
I see her sitting down on one of the chairs and she's going through her phone so intently that she doesn't notice when I approached her.
"Excuse me" I say as I sit down on the seat across her.
"I see you're done talking to her"
"More like I tried apologizing to her" I say and I try to fix my collar
"she'll come around but it'll take time and you can't really blame her"
"I know, I really wish there was something I could do to help her, wait I know, how about I assign her personal aid to help her until she recovers, that way you'll still get to go to your job and get some rest because you look like you really need it"
"Are you telling a lady she looks terrible mister"
"No no I would never dare to" I say quickly to defend myself
"I'm kidding but I get your point, I've been so busy with taking care of her and my job that I haven't had the time to sort out our bills, especially our rent but ill gladly accept the offer you made since I know who you are"
"I'm glad we came to an agreement quickly and as for the bills you can leave it to me, ill take care pf it"
"that's not necessary"
"I insist"
"Alright and also, I'm adding one last thing to the deal we made"
"If its more money it's no problem as long as you agree not to press charges"
"don't worry its more or less a money thing"
"What exactly are you trying to say"
"I need you to figure out a way she can still get a scholarship to get into college now with her leg broken since she can't secure that in the states championship"
"I'll try but if I can't, I'll just put her in one of our company's scholarships programs"
"that'll do and one last thing before I head out for work"
"By all means go ahead"
"I need you to find two people for me"
"I'll try but I can't promise anything"
"You don't have to worry, they're not hard to find"
"Okay write down the names and ill get to it asap" I hand her a sticky note and a blue pen to write it down
She takes time to write down the names almost s if she's hesitating to find them. After some seconds of deliberating, she hands the note to me.
"Please make sure you find them and contact them and tell them I'm alive and healthy together with their daughter and niece, promise me you can do that" she says while staring at me so seriously
"I promise but first let me tell my assistant to wire the settlement money to your account"
"Not to my account, to hers"
"Okay then" I get up and escort her out the door.
I wave her goodbye and turned away to start dialing my assistants phone number to speed up the settlement process when suddenly I heard a loud crash and I immediately turn as fast I can to see what caused it.
The ambulance truck came in very fast and hit someone. Wait that looks like the direction Lillys mum was heading. I immediately get filled with dread as I rush out with the other people and nurses to check who was hit.
I run over to the ambulance car and get immediately shocked as I saw what my fears had confirmed.
It was Lillys mum that was hit and she was lying on the ground and covered in blood. I rushed to her side as I see her trying to say something. I gently raise her head and scream for the nurses, doctors and anybody to come and help her as I could feel that she was slowly dying.
"You have to keep your promise "she says in between gasps which looked like it was hard to take
"Shh, I promised I will, now don't say anything and stay awake for me" I say desperately trying to keep her awake form slipping into unconsciousness
"You have to let her father know who she is, make sure she doesn't end up like me"
"I will, just stay with me, the doctors here okay" I say as the nurses brought down a stretcher to lift her body
"Tell my baby I love her and I always will and she should forgive her father because it wasn't his fault" she keeps talking in a delirious state. The nurses slowly lift her body from the ground and unto the stretcher and start running towards with hospital with me in tow
She refuses to let go of my hand and I in turn grip it for dear life. I can't believe I'm responsible for ruining theses peoples lives. As we were approaching the ICU she lets go and gets ushered in.
I stare at the door and I'm I shock and disbelief at what just happened. I look at my hands which were red and colored in blood. I can do nothing but hope and pray she makes it out alive. For her daughter's sake at least.
After what seemed like hours but it was mere minutes, the doctor comes out of the ICU and lets me know she didn't make it and that he was sorry for my loss. She apparently lost a lot of blood and was already in a fragile state so her body was too tired to fight and she had a ruptured lung and broken ribs. She passed way during the surgery. I have no clue how I'm going to break the news to miss Lillian. I slumped down on the chairs provided and immediately reached for my phone. When I brought it out, it came with the note she gave me. I opened the note and was immediately filled with dread. What I'm seeing can't be real. It just can't. Because what I seeing is the name of someone who I've lived up to my entire life. The person who gave my life purpose and who I now plan on succeeding as his only heir. I see the name Darius booker and the name Leila hart scribbled down which confirmed my suspicions about the discussion we had some days ago. When I told her my name and the company, I represented she immediately went silent and agreed to my terms of not pressing charges against me. She only asked me one question and I answered. The question was if Obadiah booker was still alive. I told her he passed away some few years ago. She must have thought it was time to reconnect her daughter with her father as she saw an opportunity had presented itself. So, the whole time I thought I was the only heir to the company, turns out miss Lillian is the lost heiress to the billion-dollar company I had worked my entire life for. I had no idea what I was going to do regarding the promise I made but one thing is for sure, I was not going to let anyone take what belongs to me even if it means breaking the promise I made to Lillys mom. Afterall the dead don't talk, atleast not from the grave.
