The atmosphere at the Ichiraku stand was usually warm and welcoming, but today, for Naruto, it felt strangely heavy. Sitting on his usual stool, he ate slowly, almost mechanically, from his bowl of noodles. Each chopstick-full of noodles he brought to his mouth tasted bland, flavorless, as if Sakura's words had drained all the joy he normally found in this place.
The stand hadn't changed: the same curtains fluttering lightly in the wind, the soft aroma of broth filling the air, and Teuchi, always behind the counter, bustling about with his usual smile. But today, even that smile seemed unable to pierce the bubble of gloom surrounding Naruto.
He let out a long sigh, his thoughts circling back endlessly to the harsh conversation he'd had with Sakura. Her words were like a blade, still twisting in his mind.
"Maybe Shikamaru was right," he thought at last, setting down his chopsticks. "I need to stop living to please others... But how do you even do that?"
Teuchi, who had been observing Naruto for a while, gently placed a clean bowl on the counter before approaching. He had noticed the young ninja's somber expression since he'd arrived and could guess what was bothering him. After all, he'd seen Sakura pass by a few days earlier, looking upset, while Naruto seemed utterly downcast.
"Naruto," Teuchi began in a kind tone, "you know, love isn't always what we imagine it to be. Sometimes, you have to accept that some things just don't work out and move on."
Naruto looked up at him, surprised. The old vendor rarely delved into such personal topics, but his words carried a certain weight.
"Move on, huh?" Naruto murmured, frowning as if the words struck a chord within him.
Teuchi nodded, a fatherly smile on his face. "The important thing is to stay true to yourself, Naruto. If you change, do it for you, not for someone else."
Naruto reflected deeply on those words. Just as he was about to ask a question, a familiar voice called out behind him.
"Naruto! Why didn't you come to our party last night?"
He turned to see Ino entering the stand, looking slightly annoyed but with a hint of curiosity in her eyes. She wore her usual purple outfit, and her long blonde hair swayed as she approached.
Naruto winced slightly, embarrassed. He hadn't really thought of an excuse for his absence.
"I... uh... I wasn't in the mood," he admitted honestly, lowering his eyes to his bowl.
Ino narrowed her eyes, crossing her arms. "Not in the mood? What's wrong? You didn't spend all your time training, did you?"
Naruto shook his head, hesitant to respond.
"So what, we're not good enough for you now!?" Ino pressed, seeing him clearly searching for excuses.
Naruto, realizing he probably had no other choice, finally gave in and murmured, "It's because of Sakura."
Ino's eyes widened. "So it's true, what they're saying?"
Naruto's head shot up. "What? Everyone knows?"
Ino shrugged. "Not everyone, but you know how it is. People talk. And no, it wasn't Shikamaru who spilled. That's not his style."
She made a point of clarifying that it wasn't Shikamaru because, when he came to the party without Naruto, whom he was supposed to bring along, no amount of insistence from the others could extract the reason from him. That guy's really something.
Ino pulled up a stool beside him and sat down. "Alright, spill it. What happened?"
Naruto hesitated, but the sincerity in Ino's eyes convinced him. He briefly explained the conversation with Sakura, her words, and how they had affected him. Ino listened silently, nodding occasionally.
"And that's it," he concluded. "I guess I've been too... persistent with her. Maybe I really am annoying."
Ino raised an eyebrow, a teasing smile forming on her lips. "Maybe you are," she teased, eliciting a slight smile from Naruto.
"But seriously," she continued, "you're not annoying, Naruto. Well, not always. You're... persistent, and that's a good thing, but sometimes, it can be a bit much. You get what I mean?"
"And you know Sakura with her bad temper… I don't think she meant to hurt you intentionally, especially since things aren't easy for her right now."
"She didn't mean to hurt me... If only that were true..."
Naruto nodded, taking her words to heart, though he remained skeptical of Sakura's true intentions. The words she'd used earlier clearly showed she was out to crush him.
Silence settled for a moment, broken only by the sound of noodles in Naruto's bowl. Then, he turned his gaze toward her, his blue eyes meeting hers.
"Maybe I've been blind this whole time," he said suddenly.
Ino, surprised, tilted her head. "What do you mean?"
"I mean," Naruto replied with disarming sincerity, "I've spent so much time focusing on Sakura that I never noticed how cute you are, especially now, trying to cheer me up."
Ino froze, her cheeks taking on a faint pink hue. "W-what?" she stammered before regaining her composure, a sarcastic smile appearing on her face. "Stop saying nonsense, Uzumaki."
Naruto shrugged, a genuine smile on his face. "I really mean it, you know. Thanks, Ino."
She turned away, trying to hide her embarrassment. "Tch, idiot," she muttered, but her tone held no malice.
Naruto finished his bowl and stood up. "I've got to go. Thanks again, Ino. And thanks to you too, old man," he added, glancing at Teuchi, who had been silently watching them with a knowing smile.
As Naruto got up to leave, Ino grabbed his arm, stopping him from leaving the stand immediately.
"Wait a second, Naruto," she said with a determined smile. "Tomorrow night, we're having another get-together. This time, you're coming."
Naruto grimaced, hesitating. "Uh... I don't know, Ino. I've got a lot going on... Training, ninja stuff..."
Ino rolled her eyes, clearly unimpressed. "Stop making excuses. You're not as busy as you pretend to be, Naruto. Everyone knows you train like crazy, but you also need to unwind."
Naruto tried a sheepish smile. "Yeah, but... I mean, after everything that's happened, I'm not sure it's a good idea."
"Exactly why it's a great idea," Ino countered, crossing her arms with an authoritative look. "You're always the first to say we shouldn't give up, so don't start now. We all need you, Naruto, and you need us."
Naruto lowered his gaze, still searching for a way out. "But if Sakura's there..."
"If Sakura's there, you ignore her. Simple," Ino declared with a mischievous smile. "And besides, you're big enough to handle it, right? I know you; you're stronger than this."
Naruto remained silent for a moment before sighing, defeated. "Fine, but only because you're forcing me."
"Exactly," Ino replied with a wink. "Tomorrow night, don't be late."
Naruto nodded, a small smile on his face, before leaving the stand.
