Chapter 188 - Threads Of The Past

The team moved through the facility cautiously, their nerves frayed from the betrayals and the looming threats. Every hallway felt like a trap, every shadow a potential enemy. Evelyn led the way, her knowledge of the facility proving invaluable, though the air between her and Sana was thick with distrust.

"Keep your guard up," Rylan whispered to the group. "Orion wouldn't leave any part of this place unprotected."

Sana, walking behind Evelyn, kept her weapon ready. Though they were forced to rely on Evelyn, every step reminded her of the lies and betrayal that had almost cost them everything. Zara followed closely, her eyes darting nervously at every sound, while Rylan brought up the rear, his weapon sweeping for threats.

As they turned a corner, Evelyn paused at an intersection. "This way," she said, pointing to a narrow corridor on the left.

"How do you know?" Sana asked sharply.

Evelyn hesitated. "Because... I've been here before."

"Great," Zara muttered under her breath. "More secrets."

Evelyn ignored the comment and pressed forward, but her hesitation wasn't lost on the group. They moved into the corridor, and the air changed, growing colder. The walls were lined with old, rusted machinery, and faint whispers seemed to echo through the space.

"This place feels wrong," Zara said, shivering.

"It's not the place," Evelyn murmured, almost to herself. "It's the memories."

Sana frowned. "What are you talking about?"

Evelyn stopped and turned to face the group. "Orion didn't just build this facility as a base. It's... more than that. This place was where his experiments began."

"Experiments?" Rylan asked, his voice low.

Evelyn nodded. "On people. On me."

Her words hit the group like a shockwave.

Sana narrowed her eyes. "You're saying you were one of his test subjects?"

"Yes," Evelyn admitted. "Years ago, before I escaped. Orion didn't just manipulate technology; he manipulated minds. He used people as experiments to develop his control programs his ultimate tools for domination."

Zara swallowed hard. "That explains why he's always been one step ahead. He's been perfecting his methods on real people."

Evelyn's face darkened. "I thought I was free when I escaped. But no one ever truly escapes Orion. He has a way of pulling you back, no matter how far you run."

Rylan looked at her, a mix of pity and suspicion in his eyes. "So you're saying he still has control over you?"

"I broke free from the programming," Evelyn said, her voice steady. "But I can't erase what he did to me. And I can't ignore the damage he's still doing to others."

They reached a sealed room at the end of the corridor. Evelyn hesitated before entering. "This room... it holds files. Records of everything Orion has done."

Sana stepped forward. "Then we need to see them."

Evelyn placed her hand on the scanner, and the door hissed open. Inside, the room was lined with shelves filled with old data tapes, each one marked with a date and code. A single terminal sat in the center, its screen glowing faintly.

Zara hurried to the terminal and began accessing the files. "There's so much here," she murmured, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "Schematics, projects, personnel records... wait." She froze.

"What?" Rylan asked, stepping closer.

Zara turned to the group, her face pale. "There are files on us. All of us."

One by one, Zara pulled up the files. They saw surveillance footage of their pasts, private moments they thought were their own. Orion had been watching them for years, planning, manipulating, and weaving them into his grand scheme.

"He's been orchestrating this from the beginning," Rylan said, his voice heavy with anger. "Every decision, every move we've made he's been ahead of us."

Sana clenched her fists. "No. He might've been watching, but our choices are our own. We're here because we want to stop him."

Evelyn looked at the files, her expression unreadable. "You don't understand. This isn't just surveillance. Orion uses these files to predict behavior. He's been mapping our every thought and move."

Sana glared at her. "And you knew this? You were part of it?"

Evelyn met her gaze, unflinching. "I didn't know the extent of it. Not until now."

Zara suddenly gasped. "There's more. These aren't just surveillance files. These are experiments." She clicked on one file, and a video began to play.

The screen showed a young Evelyn, strapped to a chair, her face filled with fear. Orion's voice echoed through the room as he conducted his twisted experiments. The footage shifted to other victims, each subjected to the same cruel process.

The group watched in silence, the horror of Orion's actions sinking in.

"I... I didn't know he was doing this to so many," Evelyn whispered, tears in her eyes.

Sana's voice was cold. "How convenient."

"Enough," Rylan said, stepping between them. "This isn't helping. We need to figure out how to use this information to stop him."

Zara nodded. "There's a master file here. It's encrypted, but if we can crack it, it might give us the upper hand."

As Zara worked on decrypting the master file, the facility shook violently. Alarms blared, and the lights flickered.

"What now?" Sana demanded.

Evelyn's face turned pale. "He knows we're here."

Suddenly, the terminal screen went black, replaced by Orion's face. He smirked, his eyes cold and calculating.

"Did you really think you could uncover my secrets without consequences?" he said. "You've opened the door, but you won't live long enough to walk through it."

The screen went dark, and a robotic voice announced: "Self-destruct sequence activated. Ten minutes remaining."

Zara cursed under her breath. "I'm not done with the file yet!"

Sana turned to the group. "We have to make a choice stay and get the file or leave and save ourselves."

The team standing in the room, the countdown ticking ominously in the background, as they face the ultimate decision: risk everything for the information that could stop Orion or abandon it to survive another day.
