Chapter 189 - The Mask Slips

The team bolted out of the self-destructing facility with seconds to spare, their hearts pounding as explosions roared behind them. They had narrowly escaped, but their mission was far from over. Orion's face on the screen, taunting them, remained etched in their minds. His words were not just a threat they were a challenge. He wanted them to come after him, to play his twisted game.

Sana's knuckles whitened as she gripped her weapon. "He thinks he's untouchable," she said, her voice low and furious. "It's time to prove him wrong."

Back at the hideout, tensions were high. The team had managed to retrieve fragments of the master file, but much of it was still encrypted. Zara worked furiously at her computer, sweat beading on her forehead as she tried to crack the code.

"This file could be the key to taking him down," Zara said, her voice strained. "But it's like he designed it to mess with my head."

Rylan stood by the window, scanning the streets for any signs of pursuit. "We don't have much time. If Orion knows we're alive, he'll send everything he has to eliminate us."

Sana paced the room, her mind racing. Evelyn sat in a corner, unusually quiet, her face pale. The guilt and fear she carried were evident.

Sana finally stopped and turned to Evelyn. "You know more than you're telling us. Spill it."

Evelyn's head snapped up. "I've told you everything I know."

"Really?" Sana said, her voice dripping with skepticism. "Because every time we uncover something new, your name seems to be connected to it."

Evelyn's hands trembled as she stood. "You think this is easy for me? Do you think I wanted to be part of his schemes? He manipulated me, just like everyone else!"

"Maybe," Sana said, stepping closer. "Or maybe you've been playing both sides."

"Enough!" Rylan barked, stepping between them. "This isn't helping. We need to focus on the file and figure out our next move."

Zara interrupted, her voice urgent. "I've got something."

Everyone gathered around the computer as Zara pulled up a decrypted portion of the file. It contained detailed information about Orion's operations—names, locations, and strategies. But one entry stood out: Project Ghostmask.

"What is this?" Rylan asked.

Zara clicked on the entry, and a series of documents and images appeared on the screen. The project detailed Orion's creation of false identities and infiltrators within organizations worldwide.

"Ghostmask..." Evelyn whispered, her face paling further. "It's not just a codename. It's a person."

Sana's eyes narrowed. "Who?"

Before Evelyn could answer, Zara pulled up a video file attached to the project. The grainy footage showed a figure in a dark room, their face obscured by a high-tech mask. They removed the mask slowly, revealing a face that sent chills through the room.

It was Evelyn.

"What the hell is this?" Rylan demanded, turning to Evelyn.

Evelyn's breath hitched. "I... I don't know. That's not me."

The room fell silent, the weight of the revelation crushing.

Sana's voice was icy. "You expect us to believe that? That footage shows you working for Orion."

Evelyn shook her head vehemently. "It's a setup. He must have created it to sow doubt. You have to believe me."

Rylan looked conflicted. "Orion is a master manipulator. This could be fake. But it could also be real."

The tension was interrupted by a sudden beep from Zara's computer. "We're being tracked!" she exclaimed. "Someone's trying to hack into my system."

"Can you stop it?" Rylan asked.

"I can try, but this is advanced. It has to be Orion," Zara said, her fingers flying over the keyboard.

As Zara fought the intrusion, the screen suddenly went black. Orion's face appeared once again, his cold smile mocking them.

"You're closer than you think," he said, his voice calm yet menacing. "But are you ready for the truth?"

Before anyone could respond, the screen switched to another video. It showed Evelyn in a laboratory, speaking directly to Orion.

"I'll do whatever it takes to ensure the project's success," Evelyn said in the video.

The team stared at the screen, their expressions ranging from shock to fury.

"No..." Evelyn whispered, her voice barely audible. "That's not real. It can't be real."

Sana's voice was sharp. "How do you explain that, Evelyn?"

Evelyn backed away, her hands trembling. "I don't know. I don't remember saying that."

"You don't remember? Or you don't want to admit it?" Sana shot back.

"Enough!" Rylan said again, his voice echoing through the room. "We need answers, Evelyn. Right now, you're the only link we have to Orion."

"I'm not your enemy," Evelyn said, her voice breaking. "I've been trying to help you."

"Then prove it," Sana said, her gaze unwavering. "Because if you're lying, I swear I'll—"

"Stop!" Zara interrupted, her voice panicked. "We've got incoming."

Before anyone could react, the hideout shook violently as an explosion rocked the building. Dust and debris filled the air, and the sound of approaching footsteps echoed in the chaos.

"They've found us," Rylan said, grabbing his weapon.

Zara grabbed her laptop, quickly packing it into her bag. "We need to move now."

The group scrambled to escape, but as they reached the exit, they were confronted by a squad of heavily armed mercenaries. At their center stood a man with a cold, calculating expression.

"Going somewhere?" the man said, his voice eerily familiar. He pulled off a mask, revealing a face that stunned them all.

It was Evelyn.

But the real Evelyn stood behind the group, her face a mask of confusion and terror.

"Impossible..." she whispered.

The team caught between the mercenaries and the doppelgänger, their trust in Evelyn hanging by a thread. Is this the ultimate deception, or is there more to Evelyn's past than even she knows? The lines between friend and foe blur as the truth remains just out of reach.
