Chereads / The Secret Marriage Pact / Chapter 175 - Breaking The Code

Chapter 175 - Breaking The Code

The air was thick with tension as the team huddled in their makeshift hideout, a small underground bunker they'd found after narrowly escaping the attack at the safe house. The explosion had left them shaken, but not defeated. Each member of the team bore wounds physical and emotional but their resolve remained unbroken.

Nathan paced back and forth, his mind racing. Zara sat at a corner desk, her laptop open and screens filled with lines of complex code. She had recovered a fragment of Lucien's encrypted files during their battle with the shadowy enemy, files that could hold the key to stopping them.

"We don't have much time," Nathan said, his voice tense. "They're hunting us, and they won't stop until we're gone. What do we have?"

Zara didn't look up, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "This encryption isn't just tough it's nearly impossible. It's like Lucien built this with layers of traps, designed to self-destruct if anyone tries to break it."

"Nearly impossible?" Sana asked, leaning against the wall, a hand on her holstered gun. "I don't like those odds."

Zara smirked faintly, though exhaustion showed in her eyes. "Good thing I'm not just anyone."

Elias sat nearby, clutching his side where his wound had been hastily patched. Despite his pain, his focus was razor-sharp. "What's in these files, Zara? Why are they so important?"

Zara stopped typing for a moment and glanced at him. "Lucien called it 'The Omega Protocol.' I don't know exactly what it does, but from what I've seen, it's a failsafe. If activated, it could give someone anyone total control over the world's digital infrastructure."

Nathan's eyes narrowed. "You're saying they could control everything? Banking systems, defense networks, even communication?"

Zara nodded grimly. "Everything."

A heavy silence fell over the room. The stakes had never been higher.

Hours passed as Zara worked tirelessly. Sweat beaded on her forehead, and the glow of the screen illuminated her determined expression. Nathan occasionally checked the entrance to ensure their location remained secure, while Sana and Elias alternated between resting and keeping watch.

"I'm getting close," Zara muttered, mostly to herself. "But this last layer... it's adaptive. Every time I make progress, it changes."

Nathan leaned over her shoulder. "Can you bypass it?"

Zara frowned. "Not without a key. Lucien must've had something a device, a password, maybe even a biometric scan."

Nathan sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "We don't have time to look for a key. Is there another way?"

"There's always another way," Zara said, determination flaring in her voice. "But it's risky. If I force the system too hard, it could wipe everything."

Sana stepped forward. "And if you don't?"

Zara's silence was answer enough.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Zara leaned back in her chair. "I've created a workaround. It's not perfect, but it might get us what we need."

"What's the catch?" Elias asked.

Zara hesitated. "It's going to trigger an alarm in their system. They'll know exactly where we are."

Nathan exchanged a glance with Sana and Elias. "Then we'll have to move fast. Zara, do it."

With a deep breath, Zara initiated the sequence. The bunker filled with a faint hum as her laptop worked overtime, decrypting the files piece by piece. On the screen, lines of code unraveled, revealing fragments of Lucien's secrets.

"I'm in!" Zara exclaimed, her voice filled with both relief and urgency. "There's a file here—a blueprint for the Omega Protocol. It's worse than we thought. If this gets into the wrong hands…"

Her sentence was cut short as alarms began to blare. The screen flashed red, displaying a chilling message: "Intrusion detected. Response team en route."

"They're coming," Sana said, her voice calm but firm. "How long do we have?"

Zara glanced at the timer on her screen. "Five minutes. Maybe less."

Nathan grabbed his gear. "Download what you can and wipe the rest. We can't let them recover this."

Zara nodded, her fingers flying across the keyboard. Data streamed onto her external drive, but the percentage bar crept forward painfully slowly.

Elias, still weak but resolute, readied his weapon. "We'll hold them off."

Sana smirked. "Speak for yourself. I plan to make them regret finding us."

Nathan tightened his grip on his rifle. "Stay focused. We don't win this fight we just buy time."

The sound of approaching vehicles echoed through the tunnels, growing louder with each passing second. Nathan and Sana took up defensive positions near the entrance while Elias covered Zara.

"Almost there," Zara said, her voice strained. "Just a little longer."

The first explosion rocked the bunker, shaking the walls and knocking dust from the ceiling. Smoke filled the entrance as the enemy stormed in, their black armor gleaming ominously. They moved with precision, their weapons trained on the team.

Nathan fired first, his shots forcing the enemy to scatter. Sana followed suit, her movements swift and deadly as she took down two attackers with well-placed shots. But for every one they dropped, two more seemed to appear.

"Zara!" Nathan shouted over the chaos. "How much longer?"

"Thirty seconds!" she yelled back, her fingers moving faster than ever.

The enemy pressed forward, their numbers overwhelming. Elias gritted his teeth and fired, his injuries forgotten in the heat of battle. But it was clear they were being pushed back.

Finally, Zara shouted, "Got it! The data's secured!"

Nathan didn't hesitate. "Blow the servers. Now!"

Zara hit a button, and a series of charges they had rigged earlier detonated, destroying the equipment and sending a shockwave through the bunker. The enemy paused, momentarily thrown off balance.

"Fall back!" Nathan ordered, helping Zara to her feet. The team retreated through a hidden exit, the sound of gunfire and explosions fading behind them.

As they emerged into the night, bruised but alive, Zara handed Nathan the drive. "This is it. Everything we need to stop them."

Nathan nodded, his expression grim. "Then let's end this."

But before they could move, a voice echoed from the shadows. "You're not going anywhere."

The team spun around to see the armored leader from before, flanked by a new squad of heavily armed soldiers. He raised his weapon, his voice cold and merciless.

"You've run long enough. This ends now."

The team surrounded, their victory overshadowed by the arrival of a relentless enemy who seemed to be one step ahead.
