Chapter 176 - Unforseen Alliances

The team stood frozen, surrounded by the heavily armed squad that had cornered them in the clearing. Their adrenaline still pumped from the narrow escape, but this moment felt heavier than any battle they'd faced so far. The leader of the enemy squad, a tall man with a cold expression and steely eyes, stepped forward, his weapon raised.

"Hand over the drive," he demanded, his voice calm but threatening. "And maybe I'll let you live."

Nathan tightened his grip on his gun, his mind racing for a plan. Behind him, Zara clutched the drive like her life depended on it which it did. Sana and Elias moved subtly, positioning themselves for a potential counterattack.

"You're making a mistake," Nathan said, his voice steady despite the chaos in his mind. "You don't know who you're dealing with."

The leader smirked, unimpressed. "I could say the same about you."

Before anyone could act, a loud explosion echoed from the trees nearby. Smoke billowed into the air, and chaos erupted as another group of armed individuals stormed the clearing. Their black uniforms bore no insignias, and their advanced weaponry suggested they were more than mercenaries.

The new group opened fire, targeting the enemy squad that had surrounded Nathan and his team. The ambush sent the original attackers scattering, their leader barking orders as bullets flew.

"Who are they?" Zara asked, her voice trembling with both fear and confusion.

"No idea," Nathan replied, pulling her behind a tree for cover. "But we're not waiting to find out. Move!"

The team scrambled through the dense forest, dodging gunfire and explosions. The sound of shouting and combat grew louder behind them. Sana paused for a moment, glancing back at the clearing.

"They're not here for us," she said, realization dawning. "They're targeting each other."

Elias, limping but determined, shook his head. "Doesn't matter. We're still in the crossfire."

Nathan led them deeper into the forest, his mind racing. He couldn't shake the feeling that this new group wasn't just a coincidence. Someone else was playing a game, and they were caught in the middle.

After what felt like an eternity, the team stumbled into a small, abandoned cabin hidden in the woods. They secured the door and windows, their breaths heavy with exhaustion.

"Does anyone have any idea who that was back there?" Elias asked, slumping against the wall.

Zara shook her head. "They're not Lucien's men. Their tactics are different—more precise. Whoever they are, they're professionals."

Before anyone could respond, a knock echoed through the cabin. The team froze, their weapons drawn and aimed at the door. Another knock came, this time softer, followed by a voice.

"You're safe for now. Open the door."

Nathan gestured for everyone to stay back as he cautiously approached the door. "Who's there?"

"A friend," the voice replied. "And your only chance of surviving the next 24 hours."

Nathan hesitated but finally opened the door slightly. A man stepped inside, his face hidden beneath a hood. He moved with a confidence that suggested he wasn't afraid of them.

"Who are you?" Nathan demanded.

The man pulled back his hood, revealing sharp features and piercing green eyes. "My name is Rylan. I'm here to help."

Rylan explained quickly, his tone clipped and urgent. "The group that attacked you was sent by Lucien. The second group? They're part of a rogue faction trying to dismantle his operation."

"And you?" Sana asked, her gun still pointed at him. "What's your angle?"

Rylan met her gaze without flinching. "I used to work for Lucien. Until I saw what he was planning."

Nathan narrowed his eyes. "And why should we trust you?"

"You shouldn't," Rylan admitted, shrugging. "But if you want to take Lucien down, you're going to need me. I know his network, his resources, and his weaknesses."

Zara stepped forward. "If you know so much, why haven't you stopped him yourself?"

Rylan's expression darkened. "Because Lucien has leverage on me. On my family. I've been trying to bring him down from the inside, but I can't do it alone."

Rylan pulled out a device from his pocket and placed it on the table. A holographic map appeared, showing a vast network of locations and names connected to Lucien's operation. The team stared in awe.

"This is his empire," Rylan explained. "The Omega Protocol is just the beginning. If you don't stop him, he'll have complete control over the global infrastructure."

Elias crossed his arms. "And how do we know you're not leading us into a trap?"

"You don't," Rylan said bluntly. "But you have the drive, and I have the knowledge to decode it. Without me, you'll never reach Lucien in time."

Nathan glanced at the team. Trusting Rylan was a gamble, but they had little choice. Finally, he nodded. "We'll work together. But if you betray us, I'll end this partnership personally."

Rylan smirked. "Fair enough."

The team spent the next few hours devising a plan with Rylan's help. He revealed the location of Lucien's primary base a heavily fortified compound in a remote region. The map showed a possible weak point in the security system, but breaching it would require perfect timing and coordination.

As they finalized their strategy, Zara's laptop beeped, signaling an incoming transmission. She frowned and opened the message, her eyes widening as she read.

"What is it?" Nathan asked.

Zara turned to the team, her face pale. "It's from Lucien. He knows we have the drive."

The message played aloud, Lucien's voice dripping with menace. "You think you've outsmarted me? You've only delayed the inevitable. Surrender now, or watch as everything you care about burns."

The message ended, and the room fell silent. Rylan broke the tension, his voice grim. "We don't have much time. Lucien's coming."

Nathan stood, his expression steely. "Then we move. No more running. It's time to take the fight to him."

But as the team prepared to leave, Zara noticed something alarming on her screen. "Wait... this isn't just a threat. He's tracking us."

The cabin shuddered violently as an explosion rocked the ground outside. The team barely had time to react before the sound of approaching helicopters filled the air.

Nathan turned to the others, his voice sharp
