Chapter 167 - A Divide Within

The quiet hum of the dimly lit control room was the only sound that could be heard as Nathan sat in front of the monitors. His fingers hovered over the keys, but the weight of the decision before him made it feel like the air had thickened. Beside him, Sana paced back and forth, her footsteps echoing in the silence. Both of them were feeling the strain of the hours they had spent trying to come up with a solution, but the situation was rapidly deteriorating.

Everything they had worked for, all the sacrifices, seemed to be unraveling before their eyes. Zara's betrayal had rocked them to their core, but what followed was even worse. The more they uncovered, the more they realized that there were cracks in their own team. Trust, the foundation that had held them together through countless dangers, was now in question.

"I can't believe she did that," Sana muttered, stopping her pacing for a moment to glance at Nathan. "Zara... She was one of us. She was a friend. How could she have been working with Lucien all along?"

Nathan let out a long, frustrated sigh. "I don't know. But it changes everything. If she's been pulling the strings behind the scenes, how many of us have been manipulated?"

The question lingered in the air, unanswered. As much as they wanted to move past the betrayal, they couldn't. Zara wasn't the only one who had been part of their circle. Others had stood by their side, but now, Nathan wasn't so sure who could be trusted.

Sana turned back to face him, her eyes filled with frustration and anger. "I thought we were doing the right thing. I thought we were fighting for something better. But now... I feel like I've been blind. If Lucien has infiltrated everything, if he has control over people we trust, how do we even begin to fight back?"

Nathan rubbed his temples, the weight of her words settling heavily on him. It was one thing to fight an external enemy, but fighting against someone on the inside, someone who had gained their trust, was a different kind of war. They were no longer just facing Lucien's army they were facing the possibility that they were surrounded by enemies within their own ranks.

"We can't just give up," Nathan said, his voice steady despite the turmoil inside. "We've come too far to back down now. We need to find out who else is with Lucien. We need to root out the traitors before it's too late."

Sana nodded slowly, but the doubt in her eyes was hard to ignore. "I know. But how do we do that? How do we figure out who's with us and who's against us?"

Before Nathan could answer, the door to the control room slid open with a soft hiss, and a figure stepped inside. It was Zara. Her face was calm, unreadable. She didn't look like someone who had just betrayed them; she looked more like someone who had already made peace with their decisions.

"What do you want?" Nathan demanded, his tone sharp, his hand instinctively reaching for his weapon.

Zara didn't flinch. "I'm not here to fight. At least, not with you two."

Sana stepped forward, her expression hardening. "Then why are you here? After everything... how can you show your face again?"

Zara's gaze shifted from Sana to Nathan. "I came to offer you something. A way out of this."

Nathan narrowed his eyes. "A way out? You betrayed us, and now you want to help?"

Zara's lips curved into a faint smile. "It's not about helping you, Nathan. It's about helping myself. And if you're smart, you'll realize that helping me is the only way for you to survive."

Sana took a step forward, her voice low and dangerous. "Survive? You really think we'll just roll over and join you after everything you've done?"

Zara met her gaze without hesitation. "No. But I think you'll realize soon enough that you have no choice. Lucien has won. The system is already falling apart. You can either join him and be part of the new world he's creating, or you can keep fighting and watch everything crumble. But make no mistake you're running out of time."

Nathan and Sana exchanged a look. The offer, as twisted as it was, made some sense. They had been fighting for so long, trying to hold on to an ideal that now seemed increasingly fragile. But they weren't willing to give up that easily.

"You're wrong," Nathan said, his voice firm. "We'll stop Lucien. We'll find a way. And we'll do it without you."

Zara's smile didn't fade, but there was a coldness in her eyes now. "You think you have time? You're not just fighting Lucien, Nathan. You're fighting against the people who have been with you from the beginning. You're fighting against the very system you're trying to save."

The words hit harder than Nathan expected. What did Zara mean? Who was she talking about?

"You don't understand," Zara continued, her voice quieter now. "You don't realize just how deep the corruption runs. Lucien isn't the only one who's been playing the game. There are people among you people you trust who've been working with him from the start."

Nathan's heart skipped a beat. "Who?"

Zara shook her head, her eyes glinting with something dangerous. "You'll figure it out soon enough. But by then, it will be too late."

With those words, she turned and walked out of the room, leaving behind a trail of uncertainty and fear. Nathan and Sana stood in silence, the weight of what Zara had said settling in.

"What did she mean by that?" Sana asked, her voice trembling slightly. "Who's working with Lucien?"

Nathan didn't answer immediately. His mind was racing. Zara's betrayal was bad enough, but now, the possibility that there were more traitors among them was too much to ignore. Who could they trust? How could they keep moving forward when they didn't know who was on their side?

"I don't know," Nathan said finally, his voice grim. "But we need to find out. Fast."

As the two of them stood there, the weight of their decision pressed down on them like an invisible force. The war was no longer just about fighting Lucien. It was about fighting the very people they had trusted, the people who had once fought beside them. The line between ally and enemy had become blurred, and it was harder than ever to know who to trust.

But there was no turning back now. They had come too far, and the stakes were too high. They had to uncover the truth—no matter the cost.

Nathan turned to Sana, determination burning in his eyes. "We'll find them. We'll expose the traitors. And we'll stop Lucien once and for all."

Sana nodded, but her face was still clouded with doubt. "I hope you're right."

The silence that followed was deafening, broken only by the sound of the distant alarms blaring. They didn't have much time. The walls were closing in, and the choices they made now would determine whether they succeeded or failed.

As they prepared to leave the control room, ready to face whatever lay ahead, Nathan couldn't shake the feeling that their biggest battle was still to come.

Just as Nathan and Sana were about to exit, an explosion echoed through the facility. The ground shook, and the lights flickered. In the distance, they could hear the sound of footsteps too many to be just one person.

Someone had found them. Someone who knew they were coming.

Nathan's heart pounded in his chest as he realized that the traitor they were looking for might be closer than they thought.
