Chapter 168 - The Final Weapon

The tension in the air was thick as Nathan and Sana walked into the underground lab. The facility was hidden deep beneath the city, accessible only through a maze of tunnels known to very few. Its existence was a secret, one that even their enemies hadn't uncovered at least not yet.

The lab was dimly lit, with blue and white lights flickering off the sleek metallic walls. Monitors and machines lined every surface, humming softly. In the center of the room stood Zara, waiting for them with an expression that was hard to read.

"You came," Zara said, her voice calm but with a slight edge.

"We didn't have a choice," Nathan replied, his tone cold. "You said you had something that could help us take down Lucien. We're here. Now, talk."

Zara smirked slightly and motioned for them to follow. "I'll do more than talk. I'll show you."

Nathan exchanged a wary glance with Sana but followed Zara deeper into the lab. She led them to a large chamber sealed by a reinforced metal door. With a series of swift movements, she entered a code on the keypad, and the door slid open with a hiss.

Inside was a sight that took their breath away.

In the middle of the chamber stood a colossal machine, its sleek frame glowing with an eerie blue light. It looked like a hybrid of advanced technology and something almost alien. Cables snaked around it, connecting to power sources and monitors that displayed streams of incomprehensible data.

"This," Zara said, gesturing toward the machine, "is the Final Weapon. The only thing capable of stopping Lucien."

Nathan's brows furrowed as he stepped closer. "What is it? Some kind of bomb? A weaponized AI?"

Zara shook her head. "It's more than that. It's a disruptor designed to neutralize Lucien's entire operation. His network, his resources, his control over the Council... all of it."

Sana stepped forward, her arms crossed. "And why should we trust you? You've betrayed us once. What's stopping you from doing it again?"

Zara sighed, her expression softening for a moment. "I don't expect you to trust me. But you don't have a choice. I built this weapon to stop Lucien because I've seen what he's capable of. I know the horrors he'll unleash if he wins."

Nathan studied her carefully, trying to gauge her sincerity. "How does it work?"

Zara moved to one of the monitors and brought up a holographic display. A blueprint of the machine appeared, showing its intricate design. "It's a frequency disruptor. Lucien's control over the Council and his ability to manipulate his soldiers relies on a unique signal embedded in their neural implants. This machine will send out a counter-signal, shutting down his network entirely."

Nathan's eyes widened. "You're saying this could cut him off from his entire army?"

"Exactly," Zara confirmed. "But there's a catch."

"Of course there is," Sana muttered under her breath.

Zara ignored the comment and continued. "The machine needs to be activated from within Lucien's main facility. The signal has to be deployed at its source, or it won't reach the entire network."

Nathan's heart sank. "That's a suicide mission. Lucien's base is the most fortified place in the city. Getting in there would be impossible."

"Not impossible," Zara corrected, a glint of determination in her eyes. "Just extremely dangerous. But it's the only way."

Sana stepped closer to Nathan, her voice low. "We can't trust her. What if this is a trap? What if she's leading us straight into Lucien's hands?"

Nathan considered her words carefully. Zara had betrayed them once, but there was something in her demeanor now something almost desperate. It was possible she was telling the truth. But it was also possible this was another one of Lucien's games.

"We'll need a team," Nathan said finally. "If we're going to do this, we need to plan every detail. One mistake, and we're dead."

Zara nodded. "Agreed. But we don't have much time. Lucien's forces are moving. If we don't act now, it'll be too late."

For the next several hours, Nathan, Sana, and Zara worked together to form a plan. They studied maps of Lucien's base, identified weak points in his security, and devised strategies to infiltrate the facility.

The tension between them was palpable. Sana remained distrustful of Zara, and Nathan was torn between caution and urgency. But they all knew the stakes. This was their last chance to stop Lucien and save everything they had fought for.

As they finalized their plan, Nathan couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. Zara's knowledge of Lucien's base was too precise, too detailed. It was almost as if she had been there recently.

"Zara," Nathan said, his voice sharp. "How do you know so much about Lucien's base? Have you been working with him again?"

Zara stiffened, her gaze locking with his. "I told you I've been trying to stop him. Yes, I've been inside his base, but it was to gather intel. I've risked my life to bring you this information."

Nathan didn't respond immediately. He could see the truth in her eyes—or at least he thought he could. But the doubt lingered, gnawing at him.

Just as they were about to leave the lab to prepare for the mission, an alarm blared through the facility. The lights flickered, and the monitors displayed a warning: UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED.

"What's happening?" Sana demanded, her voice rising with panic.

Zara's expression darkened. "Lucien. He's found us."

Before they could react, the metal door to the lab slammed shut, sealing them inside. The sound of footsteps echoed outside, followed by the ominous clatter of weapons being loaded.

Nathan grabbed his weapon, his heart pounding. "We're trapped."

Zara moved to the monitors, frantically typing on the keyboard. "I can buy us some time, but we need to defend this place. If Lucien gets his hands on the Final Weapon, it's over."

The sound of an explosion rocked the facility, and the walls shook. Dust and debris fell from the ceiling as the footsteps grew louder.

Sana turned to Nathan, her eyes wide with fear and determination. "What do we do?"

Nathan gripped his weapon tightly, his jaw clenched. "We fight. We hold them off as long as we can."

As the door began to give way, Nathan knew this was just the beginning of the end. The Final Weapon was their last hope, but they might not live long enough to see it used.

The door burst open, and a shadowy figure stepped inside. It wasn't just one of Lucien's soldiers it was Lucien himself.

"Going somewhere?" Lucien said, his voice dripping with malice.

Nathan raised his weapon, his finger on the trigger. But deep down, he knew they were out of time.
