Chapter 156 - The Hunter Becomes The Prey

The team's descent into The Nexus had already gone sideways. The blaring alarms echoed through the narrow shaft as red emergency lights bathed everything in an eerie glow. Nathan could feel the tension thick in the air as the sound of boots stomping against metal reverberated closer. Their covert mission had turned into a full blown survival test.

"Move!" Nathan barked, leading the charge down the shaft. Behind him, Zara clutched her laptop tightly, trying to keep up while still working on disabling Argus, the AI security system that had detected their presence. Kane, trailing behind, seemed eerily calm, as if he had expected this outcome.

As they reached the base of the shaft, the team found themselves in a massive, dimly lit underground chamber. Machinery hummed softly, and cables ran along the walls like veins feeding into the heart of The Nexus. The only way forward was a series of pathways that crisscrossed over a seemingly bottomless pit.

"Which way?" Alex demanded, his eyes scanning the labyrinthine network of walkways.

Kane stepped forward, pointing to the left. "That path will take us to the main control hub. But we'll have to move fast Argus will be sending drones after us any second."

"No kidding," Zara muttered, her gaze locked on her screen. "Argus has already deployed guards. We've got about two minutes before they're on top of us."

Nathan nodded, gripping his weapon. "Stay close and stay sharp. Let's move."

The team darted across the narrow walkways, their footsteps echoing in the cavernous chamber. Above them, mechanical whirring grew louder as small drones equipped with searchlights and weapons descended from hidden compartments in the ceiling.

"Here they come!" Sana shouted, raising her rifle and taking aim.

The first wave of drones unleashed a hail of bullets, forcing the team to scatter. Alex and Sana returned fire, their shots precise and calculated. Nathan stayed at the front, leading Zara and Kane toward the control hub while dodging incoming fire.

"Zara, can you shut them down?" Nathan yelled over the chaos.

"I'm trying!" Zara snapped, her fingers flying over her keyboard. "But Argus keeps rerouting control systems. It's like playing whack-a-mole with an AI."

One of the drones swooped low, targeting Kane. He rolled to the side just in time, firing his pistol and hitting the drone's weak spot. It exploded in a shower of sparks, but Kane's face showed no satisfaction—only grim determination.

As they neared the hub, the team encountered a new challenge: heavily armed guards blocking their path. These weren't ordinary soldiers they moved with precision and coordination, clearly elites trained by the Shadow Council.

Nathan's team found cover behind crates and machinery as a firefight erupted. The guards had the upper hand, with superior positioning and heavier firepower.

"Zara, we need something anything to turn this around!" Nathan called out.

Zara's eyes lit up. "I've got an idea!" She tapped furiously on her laptop, and moments later, the lights in the chamber flickered and died, plunging the area into darkness.

"What did you do?" Alex whispered.

"I rerouted power from this section to overload the drones," Zara replied, a smirk on her face. "They won't be bothering us for a while."

Using the darkness to their advantage, Nathan and Sana moved silently, taking down guards one by one. Kane, surprisingly, proved to be an asset, using his knowledge of the terrain to flank the enemy and create openings for the team.

For a moment, it seemed like they might have the upper hand.

Just as the last guard fell, a chilling voice echoed through the chamber.

"Impressive. But did you really think it would be that easy?"

The team froze as a figure stepped out of the shadows a man dressed in a sleek, black tactical suit, his face obscured by a helmet. It was Lucien, one of the Shadow Council's top enforcers, known for his ruthless efficiency and unrelenting pursuit of enemies.

"You've caused quite a bit of trouble," Lucien said, his tone calm and menacing. "But this is where your little rebellion ends."

Lucien clapped his hands, and suddenly, more guards emerged from hidden passageways, their weapons trained on the team. Drones buzzed back to life, their searchlights casting harsh beams across the room.

"Drop your weapons," Lucien ordered. "Or watch your friends die."

Nathan clenched his fists, his mind racing. They were outnumbered, outgunned, and surrounded. But surrender wasn't an option—not with the Hourglass Protocol still in play.

Before anyone could act, Kane stepped forward, his hands raised in a gesture of surrender. "Wait," he said, his voice steady. "You don't need all of them. Take me instead."

"What are you doing?" Sana hissed, her eyes narrowing at Kane.

Kane ignored her, addressing Lucien directly. "I know things things you'll want to hear. Let them go, and I'll tell you everything."

Lucien tilted his head, considering the offer. "Tempting. But how do I know you're not just buying time?"

"You don't," Kane admitted. "But if you kill us all, you lose any chance of getting the intel I have. Your choice."

The room was deathly silent as everyone waited for Lucien's response.

Lucien finally nodded. "Fine. You come with me. The rest of them stay here—alive, for now."

Kane turned to Nathan, his expression unreadable. "Trust me," he said quietly. "This is the only way."

Before Nathan could respond, Lucien signaled his guards, who restrained Kane and began leading him away. The remaining guards kept their weapons trained on the team, ensuring they didn't move.

As Kane disappeared into the shadows with Lucien, Zara whispered, "Do you think he's really helping us? Or is this another betrayal?"

Nathan didn't answer. His eyes were fixed on the path ahead, his mind already racing to form a new plan. Whatever Kane's intentions, one thing was clear: they were running out of time.

The alarms blared louder, signaling that the Nexus was preparing for something big. And as Nathan glanced at Zara's screen, he saw a chilling message flashing in red:

ACTIVATION SEQUENCE INITIATED.
