Chapter 157 - The Storm Within

The team stood frozen in the aftermath of Kane's shocking departure with Lucien. The chamber was eerily silent, except for the distant hum of the Nexus's machinery. The message flashing on Zara's laptop ACTIVATION SEQUENCE INITIATED added an invisible weight to the air. It was clear: whatever the Shadow Council had planned, it was already in motion.

Nathan clenched his fists, his jaw tight with frustration. "We're running out of time. We need to move."

"What about Kane?" Sana asked, her voice sharp with suspicion. "He might've just handed us over to them."

Nathan shook his head, though doubt lingered in his eyes. "Kane's playing a game, but we don't have time to figure out his motives right now. Zara, can you track the activation sequence?"

"I'm on it," Zara replied, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "But this system's more complex than anything I've seen. It's like the code is alive, shifting every second."

Alex stepped forward, his face grim. "Then we split up. Zara and I will stay here and try to disable the activation. Nathan, you take Sana and head for the control room. If we're going to stop this, we need eyes on what they're doing."

Nathan nodded, his gaze hardening. "Let's move. And stay alive."

As Nathan and Sana moved deeper into the Nexus, the oppressive atmosphere seemed to close in around them. The corridors were cold, the metallic walls reflecting their dim flashlights. The hum of machinery grew louder, almost like a heartbeat, echoing their own racing pulses.

Sana broke the silence, her voice low but sharp. "Do you trust Kane? Because I don't."

Nathan hesitated. "I don't trust him. But I don't think he's entirely against us either. He's always had his own agenda, and I think he's betting on us to clean up this mess."

Sana frowned, gripping her rifle tighter. "If he betrays us, it'll be on you."

"I know," Nathan replied, his voice steady. "But right now, we don't have the luxury of doubt."

The conversation ended as they turned a corner and found themselves facing a massive, reinforced door. A glowing panel beside it pulsed faintly, indicating it was secured.

"This must be it," Nathan muttered, examining the door. "The control room."

Sana pointed her rifle at the panel. "Step back. I'll blow it open."

Nathan grabbed her arm. "Wait. That'll set off every alarm in the Nexus. Let's try Zara's way first."

Pulling out a small device Zara had given him earlier, Nathan plugged it into the panel. The screen flickered as the device began hacking into the system. But just as it showed progress, the sound of approaching footsteps reached their ears.

"Guards," Sana whispered, raising her weapon.

Nathan and Sana ducked into the shadows as a squad of armed guards approached the door. The guards were talking in low voices, unaware of the two figures hiding nearby.

"This is bigger than we thought," one guard said. "Lucien's got Kane in interrogation, and the Council's prepping the final stage."

"What about the Hourglass Protocol?" another guard asked. "Is it ready?"

"Almost. Once the activation completes, there's no stopping it."

Nathan and Sana exchanged a glance. They couldn't afford to let the guards secure the door.

Without a word, Nathan signaled to Sana. They moved swiftly, taking out the guards in silence. The last one fell with a muffled cry, leaving the corridor eerily quiet again.

Nathan returned to the panel and saw the device had finished its job. The door hissed open, revealing the control room beyond.

The control room was a stark contrast to the dark corridors. Bright screens lined the walls, displaying streams of data and security footage. In the center stood a massive console, its interface glowing with ominous red warnings.

Nathan approached cautiously, scanning the room for any hidden traps. Sana covered him, her rifle at the ready.

"This is it," Nathan said, staring at the console. "The heart of their operation."

Sana kept her eyes on the entrance. "Then let's shut it down."

Nathan pulled out another device Zara had prepared, connecting it to the console. Lines of code filled the screen as the device began its work.

But as the process started, an alert flashed across the monitors: SECURITY BREACH DETECTED. LOCKDOWN IMMINENT.

Sana cursed. "They know we're here."

The sound of heavy footsteps echoed down the hall. This time, it wasn't just guards—it was Lucien's elite unit, and they weren't holding back.

The first shots rang out, shattering the tension like glass. Nathan and Sana dove for cover as bullets tore through the control room. Sparks flew from shattered equipment, and the air filled with the acrid smell of burning circuits.

"We're pinned!" Sana shouted, firing back at the advancing enemies.

Nathan crawled toward the console, shielding Zara's device with his body. "I just need a few more minutes!"

"Minutes we don't have!" Sana snapped, her shots forcing the elites to take cover.

The firefight raged on, the room turning into a battlefield. Nathan worked frantically, his hands moving faster than his thoughts. Lines of code filled the screen, but the process seemed agonizingly slow.

Just as he thought they might hold their ground, a grenade rolled into the room.

"Grenade!" Sana yelled, diving to push Nathan out of the way.

The explosion rocked the room, throwing them both to the ground. Nathan's ears rang, and his vision blurred as he struggled to get up. The console was damaged, but Zara's device was still active, its screen showing 87% completion.

Lucien stepped into the room, his presence commanding even in the chaos. His rifle was slung over his shoulder, and his calm demeanor sent a chill down Nathan's spine.

"Well, well," Lucien said, his voice cold. "The hunters have become the hunted."

Sana tried to raise her weapon, but one of Lucien's men kicked it out of her hand. Another restrained her, forcing her to her knees.

Nathan, still dazed, reached for his pistol, but Lucien aimed his rifle at him. "Don't. You've already lost."

Nathan gritted his teeth, his hand hovering over his weapon. He glanced at Zara's device—it was at 94%.

Lucien smirked. "You think you're clever, but you're just a pawn in a much bigger game."

Nathan met his gaze, defiance burning in his eyes. "Then let's see how this pawn changes the board."

Lucien's smirk faltered as he noticed the device. "What did you do?"

Before Nathan could answer, the device beeped. The screen flashed: OVERRIDE COMPLETE. COUNTERMEASURE ACTIVATED.

A low rumble shook the Nexus, and the lights flickered. Lucien's confident expression twisted into one of rage.

"What have you done?!" he bellowed.

Nathan, bleeding and battered, managed a weak smile. "You'll find out."

The room erupted into chaos as explosions rocked the facility, and the team's fate hung in the balance.
