Chapter 135 - Blood Ties

The countdown clock on the device displayed less than ten minutes. The glow from its pulsating core cast eerie shadows across the room as Nathan and Zara scrambled to figure out their next move. Evelyn's chilling image flickered on the monitor, her voice echoing through the chamber.

"You'll never stop it in time," Evelyn said, her tone devoid of remorse. "This was always bigger than you, Nathan. It's about power, control... and blood."

Nathan's fists tightened. "If you think I'm going to let you win, you don't know me."

Evelyn smirked. "Oh, I know you better than you think. You see, this isn't just about stopping the Council or saving lives. It's about understanding who you are and what you're willing to sacrifice."

Her words struck a nerve, but Nathan pushed the emotions aside. There was no time to dwell on Evelyn's cryptic taunts.

"Zara," he said, his voice firm, "we need a plan. Now."

Zara, still analyzing the device's interface, looked up with a grim expression. "There's one way to shut it down, but it's risky. We'll need someone to access the device's core directly."

Nathan glanced at the device, its energy surging like a living entity. The thought of getting close to it sent a chill down his spine, but he didn't hesitate. "I'll do it."

Zara grabbed his arm, her eyes wide. "Nathan, it's too dangerous! The core's radiation levels are off the charts. If you get too close"

"then I'll do what needs to be done," Nathan interrupted, his voice resolute. "If we don't stop this, everyone dies. I'm not letting that happen."

Before Zara could argue further, a sound behind them made them both spin around.

From the shadows emerged a tall, lean figure a man Nathan hadn't seen in years. His breath caught in his throat as he recognized the face.

"Daniel," Nathan whispered.

It was his younger brother, a ghost from his past. Nathan hadn't seen Daniel since the day their family was torn apart by tragedy and betrayal. But now, here he was, alive and standing in the middle of the chaos.

"You're supposed to be dead," Nathan said, his voice filled with a mix of disbelief and anger.

Daniel stepped closer, his expression unreadable. "I was dead to you, Nathan. But not to them." He gestured toward the device. "The Council saved me. Trained me. And now, I'm here to stop you."

Zara's hand moved subtly toward her weapon, but Nathan raised a hand to stop her. "Wait," he said, his eyes never leaving Daniel. "Why are you doing this?"

Daniel's jaw tightened. "Because you left me behind. While you were off playing the hero, I was taken. They showed me the truth, Nathan. The Council isn't the enemy. They're building a new world a better one."

Nathan shook his head, his heart heavy with guilt and frustration. "You don't understand, Daniel. The Council doesn't care about anyone but themselves. They're using you."

"Am I?" Daniel asked, his voice cold. "Or are you the one being used?"

The tension between the brothers was palpable, the weight of their shared history hanging in the air.

Zara, sensing the urgency of the situation, broke the silence. "We don't have time for this. If we don't shut that thing down"

"I won't let you," Daniel said, drawing a sleek, black weapon and aiming it at Nathan.

Nathan didn't flinch. "If you're going to stop me, you'll have to pull the trigger."

For a moment, the room was silent except for the hum of the device. Daniel's hand trembled, the conflict evident in his eyes.

"I don't want to hurt you," Daniel said, his voice breaking.

"Then don't," Nathan replied softly. "Help us. You know this isn't right. You know what they've done—what they'll keep doing if we don't stop them."

Daniel's grip on the weapon faltered, and for a moment, Nathan thought he might have reached him.

But then Evelyn's voice cut through the tension. "Don't listen to him, Daniel. He abandoned you. He doesn't deserve your loyalty."

Daniel's gaze hardened. "I made my choice a long time ago."

Before Nathan could react, Daniel lunged at him, knocking him to the ground. The two brothers grappled in a brutal fight, their movements fueled by years of pain and anger.

Zara tried to intervene, but a sudden surge from the device sent a shockwave through the room, knocking her off balance.

"Nathan!" she shouted, struggling to regain her footing.

Nathan managed to pin Daniel down, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "Listen to me! This isn't who you are!"

Daniel glared up at him, his eyes filled with pain. "You don't know who I am anymore."

With a sudden burst of strength, Daniel threw Nathan off and grabbed his weapon. But instead of aiming it at Nathan, he turned it toward the device.

"What are you doing?" Nathan asked, his voice laced with confusion.

Daniel hesitated, his hand shaking. "Ending this. If I destroy the core"

"No!" Zara shouted, scrambling to her feet. "If you destroy the core, it'll trigger a chain reaction! The explosion will kill us all!"

Daniel froze, his conflicted expression betraying his inner turmoil.

Nathan took a step forward, his voice calm but firm. "There's another way. Work with us, Daniel. Trust me."

For a moment, it seemed like Daniel might lower the weapon. But then Evelyn's voice echoed once more.

"Don't be a fool, Daniel. Finish what you started."

Daniel's face twisted in anguish as he turned to Nathan. "I can't trust you. Not after everything."

Before Nathan could respond, Daniel fired.

The shot didn't hit the core, but the force of it destabilized the device even further. Sparks flew as the energy field began to spiral out of control.

Zara screamed as she was thrown back by another shockwave. Nathan barely managed to stay on his feet as the room was bathed in blinding light.

When the chaos subsided, Daniel was gone.

Nathan's heart sank as he realized his brother had disappeared into the shadows, leaving behind nothing but questions and heartbreak.

Zara crawled to the device, her face pale. "The core's on the brink of collapse. We're out of time."

Nathan clenched his fists, his mind racing. He had hoped to save his brother, but now he had to focus on saving everyone else.

As the countdown clock ticked down to its final seconds, Nathan made a decision.

"Zara," he said, his voice steady. "Get out of here. I'll finish this."

Zara's eyes widened in shock. "No way! I'm not leaving you!"

"You don't have a choice," Nathan said, grabbing her arm and pulling her toward the exit. "If I don't make it"

"You will make it!" Zara interrupted, her voice breaking.

Nathan didn't respond. He gave her one last, determined look before turning back to the device.

As he approached the unstable core, the room filled with a deafening roar. The energy surged wildly, threatening to consume everything in its path.

Nathan reached for the manual override, his fingers trembling. But just as he was about to activate it, a shadow fell over him.

"Nathan," a voice said softly.

He turned to see Daniel standing there, his face a mixture of guilt and resolve.

"I'm not letting you do this alone," Daniel said.

Before Nathan could respond, the countdown clock hit zero.

The room was consumed by blinding light as the core reached critical mass.

And then, everything went silent.
