Chapter 136 - The Point Of No Return

Nathan felt weightless, his senses overwhelmed by a deafening silence and blinding light. The core's energy surge had brought him to the brink of destruction, but he wasn't sure whether he was alive or dead. Slowly, the roar faded, replaced by the sound of his own ragged breathing.

When his vision cleared, he found himself lying on the cold metal floor. The device's core had dimmed, pulsating weakly like a dying heart. Smoke filled the air, and the acrid scent of burnt circuitry stung his nose.

"Nathan," Zara's voice called faintly, cutting through the haze.

He turned his head to see Zara struggling to her feet, her face smeared with dirt and worry. Relief flooded him—she was alive.

But his relief was short-lived. Standing beside the core was Daniel, his younger brother, who had just reappeared from the shadows in the previous chapter. Daniel's expression was one of conflict, his weapon still in hand.

"You saved it," Nathan said, his voice hoarse.

Daniel nodded, lowering his weapon. "Barely. But it's not over."

Nathan staggered to his feet, his legs unsteady. "Why, Daniel? Why are you still fighting for them? You see what this thing can do it nearly killed us all."

Daniel's jaw clenched. "I never fought for the Council. I fought for myself, for survival. And now I'm here to make things right."

Zara stepped forward cautiously. "Then help us. We need to shut this down completely before it starts up again. There's no second chance after this."

Daniel hesitated, his gaze shifting between Nathan and Zara. "I don't trust you. Either of you. But… I can't ignore what I've seen."

Nathan reached out, his voice filled with urgency. "This isn't about trust. It's about saving lives. You can still do the right thing, Daniel. It's not too late."

For a moment, the tension in the room seemed to dissipate. Daniel looked at his brother, his resolve wavering. But just as he appeared ready to agree, the chamber shuddered violently.

A deep, resonating voice echoed through the room, amplified by unseen speakers. It was Evelyn.

"You think you've won, Nathan? You've merely delayed the inevitable. The Council's plans are already in motion, and there's nothing you can do to stop us."

Nathan glared at the nearest camera, his anger bubbling to the surface. "We'll see about that."

Evelyn's laughter was cold and cutting. "The core is only one piece of the puzzle. You think this is the end? It's barely the beginning. Look around you, Nathan. Your allies are falling apart. Your so-called team is fractured. And your brother? He'll never truly stand by you."

Nathan turned to Daniel, whose face was etched with guilt and pain. Evelyn's words struck deep, threatening to shatter the fragile bond they had just begun to rebuild.

"Don't listen to her," Nathan said firmly. "She's trying to manipulate you, like she always does."

Daniel shook his head, his voice trembling. "She's right about one thing. I don't know where I stand anymore."

The floor shook again, more violently this time, as alarms blared throughout the facility. Zara quickly checked her tablet, her expression growing grim.

"The system's destabilizing," she said. "If we don't shut it down now, the entire complex will collapse. We have minutes, maybe less."

Nathan looked at the dimmed core, his mind racing. "What do we need to do?"

Zara pointed to a series of control panels on the far side of the room. "We need to override the failsafe manually. But it's a two-person job. One of us has to stay here to stabilize the core while the other activates the override."

"I'll stay," Nathan said without hesitation.

"No," Daniel interjected, stepping forward. "This is my mess as much as it's yours. I'll handle the core."

Nathan stared at his brother, torn between relief and suspicion. "Are you sure?"

Daniel nodded, his eyes steady. "I owe you this much, at least."

Zara hesitated but finally handed Nathan the tablet. "You'll need this to navigate the override sequence. I'll guide you remotely."

Nathan turned to Daniel one last time. "Don't mess this up."

Daniel smirked faintly, a hint of the boy Nathan once knew. "Just go."

Nathan and Zara sprinted toward the control panels, leaving Daniel alone with the unstable core.

The control room was in disarray, wires sparking and screens glitching as the system buckled under the strain. Zara quickly accessed the main terminal, her fingers flying over the keyboard.

"Okay," she said, her voice steady despite the chaos. "The override sequence is locked behind multiple encryptions. We'll need to work together to break through."

Nathan nodded, focusing on the tablet in his hands. "Tell me what to do."

Zara began feeding him instructions, and together they worked to dismantle the security barriers. But the process was slow, and the timer on the screen ticked down relentlessly.

"Come on, come on," Zara muttered under her breath.

Suddenly, Daniel's voice crackled over the comms. "The core's getting worse. I can't hold it much longer."

"Just a little more time!" Nathan shouted back, his fingers flying across the tablet's interface.

The next barrier fell, and then another. They were close so close.

But then, the screen flashed red, and a deafening alarm blared.

"What happened?" Nathan asked, panic creeping into his voice.

Zara's face went pale. "Evelyn must have installed a countermeasure. The system's locking us out."

Nathan slammed his fist against the console. "There has to be another way!"

"There is," Zara said reluctantly, her voice barely above a whisper. "But it's not safe. We'd have to bypass the entire system, and if we make even one mistake"

"We don't have a choice," Nathan said firmly. "Do it."

Zara hesitated for only a moment before launching into the bypass sequence. The room seemed to close in around them as the pressure mounted, every second feeling like an eternity.

Back in the core chamber, Daniel struggled to maintain control. The device pulsed erratically, sending out waves of heat and energy that threatened to overwhelm him.

"Nathan," he said through gritted teeth, "whatever you're doing, do it faster."

"We're almost there!" Nathan's voice replied, muffled by static.

Daniel glanced at the countdown clock. Less than a minute remained. His thoughts drifted to the choices that had led him here the betrayals, the regrets, and the hope that maybe, just maybe, he could make amends.

"Come on," he muttered to himself. "Hold it together."

In the control room, Zara let out a triumphant shout. "Got it! The override's ready!"

Nathan didn't wait for further instructions. He activated the final command, watching as the screen flashed green.

"It's done," he said, his voice filled with relief.

But his relief was short-lived.

The comms crackled with Daniel's voice, filled with urgency. "The core it's not shutting down. Something's wrong!"

Nathan's heart sank. "What do you mean?"

"It's like… it's fighting back. The override didn't work."

Zara's face went pale. "That's impossible. Unless…"

"Unless what?" Nathan demanded.

Zara hesitated, her voice barely audible. "Unless Evelyn installed a manual trigger. If that's the case, the only way to stop it is to destroy it directly."

Nathan's stomach turned. "But that would"

"—kill whoever's closest," Zara finished grimly.

A heavy silence fell over the comms as the weight of her words sank in.

Daniel's voice broke the silence. "I'll do it."

"No!" Nathan shouted. "There has to be another way!"

"There isn't," Daniel said firmly. "You know that. This is the point of no return, Nathan. Either I stop this, or we all die."

Nathan's chest tightened as he fought back tears. "Daniel"

"Take care of them, big brother," Daniel said, his voice soft. "And tell Mom I'm sorry."

Before Nathan could respond, the comms went dead.

In the core chamber, Daniel took a deep breath, his eyes fixed on the pulsating device. With a final, determined glance at the countdown clock, he plunged forward, disappearing into the blinding light.

And then, everything went silent.
