Amelia stood by the window, her heart heavy with the weight of everything that had happened. The sound of distant traffic hummed below, but she couldn't shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong. It had been days since Victoria's threat, and each moment since had felt like a countdown. Amelia couldn't deny the fact that the walls were closing in around them.
Lucas had done his best to shield her from the worst of it. He'd promised that they would find a way out, but Amelia knew better. She knew that Victoria wasn't someone who could be easily outmaneuvered. No, Victoria was methodical and relentless, and if Amelia wanted to protect the ones she loved, she had to take matters into her own hands.
She turned away from the window and walked back into the room. Lucas was sitting at the desk, his back to her. He had been working nonstop, trying to find a solution to their problems, but the strain was visible on his face. His usually sharp features were drawn, and the weight of their situation seemed to press down on him more with every passing hour.
Amelia approached him, her footsteps soft on the carpet. He didn't turn around, but she could see his shoulders tense as she drew closer. "Lucas," she said gently, her voice laced with a quiet urgency, "we need to talk."
He turned around slowly, his tired eyes meeting hers. There was something in his gaze—something that made Amelia's heart ache. "What is it, Amelia?" he asked, his voice tinged with exhaustion.
Amelia hesitated for a moment, gathering the courage to say what had been weighing on her for days. She had known this moment would come, but she wasn't prepared for it. "I think I know how we can end this," she said, her voice steady but filled with resolve.
Lucas frowned, confusion flickering across his face. "End it? What do you mean?"
Amelia took a deep breath, feeling the gravity of her words. "I mean Victoria. We can't keep running from her. She's too powerful, too dangerous. We have to take her down."
Lucas stood up from the desk, his expression now one of concern. "What are you talking about? We'll figure this out. We'll find a way to defeat her together."
But Amelia shook her head. "No, Lucas. It's too risky. If we keep fighting this way, we'll lose. You'll lose everything. I won't let that happen."
Lucas reached for her, his hand brushing against her arm. "What are you saying, Amelia?"
Amelia swallowed hard, her chest tight with emotion. "I'm saying that I'm going to make a sacrifice. I'm going to give Victoria what she wants."
The words hung in the air, and for a moment, it felt like the world stopped spinning. Lucas stared at her, his expression unreadable, his eyes dark with confusion and concern. "What do you mean? You can't—"
"I can," she interrupted, her voice firm despite the lump in her throat. "I can give her what she wants. If I do that, she'll leave you alone. She'll stop trying to tear apart everything you've built. And we can finally be free of her."
Lucas stepped back, his hands clenched into fists at his sides. "No. Absolutely not. I won't let you sacrifice yourself for me. There's another way. There has to be."
Amelia felt a pang of guilt as she looked at him. She knew how much he cared for her, how deeply he loved her, but she also knew that this was the only way to stop Victoria. "Lucas, I've made up my mind. This is the only way to protect you, to protect everything we've worked for."
Lucas shook his head, his voice rising with frustration. "I can't let you do this. There has to be another way. You don't have to do this, Amelia."
She reached out and placed her hand on his chest, feeling the rapid beat of his heart beneath her palm. "I'm doing this because I love you," she said softly. "I can't stand by and watch you lose everything. This is my choice. Please, trust me."
For a moment, there was a long silence between them. Lucas's eyes searched hers, his expression a mix of pain and understanding. "I trust you, Amelia," he whispered, his voice breaking slightly. "But I can't lose you."
Amelia gave him a sad smile, trying to reassure him. "You won't lose me. I'll be right here, I promise."
Lucas's hands reached up to gently cup her face, his touch tender. "I'll find another way. I won't let you go through with this."
But Amelia could see the truth in his eyes. There was no other way. Victoria's power was too great, and if she didn't give in, the whole family would pay the price. Lucas had his pride, but Amelia had always known that sometimes, sacrifice was the only path forward. And this was one of those times.
"I've made my decision, Lucas," she said, her voice firm despite the tears that threatened to fall. "I'll do whatever it takes to keep you safe."
Lucas looked like he was about to argue again, but Amelia placed a finger against his lips, silencing him. "Please," she whispered. "Let me do this."
He stared at her for a long moment, as if trying to find a way to change her mind. But he knew, deep down, that it was too late. She had made up her mind. And in that moment, he realized there was nothing he could do to stop her.
Amelia turned away, wiping the single tear that escaped her eye. She needed to be strong now, for him, for the family. She had already made the sacrifice, and now it was time to put it into motion.
But as she stepped toward the door, ready to face Victoria and make the trade that would secure their safety, a sudden thought stopped her in her tracks. What if this wasn't the end? What if Victoria had another game in mind, one even more dangerous than the one they were already playing?
Amelia's heart pounded as she turned back to Lucas, her eyes wide with fear. "Lucas, wait—"
Before she could finish her sentence, the door slammed open. A shadow stood in the doorway.
It was Victoria.
