Chapter 49 - The First Ultrasound

Amelia sat nervously in the waiting room of the clinic, her hands clasped tightly together. The room was quiet except for the occasional sound of pages turning as other patients flipped through magazines. Lucas sat beside her, his leg bouncing slightly in a rare show of unease. It was a moment both of them had been anticipating and dreading.

"This is it," Amelia whispered, breaking the silence.

Lucas reached over and squeezed her hand. "We'll face whatever comes, together."

Her heart warmed at his words, but the weight of the past few weeks still pressed heavily on her. Between Victoria's schemes, Luca's cryptic warnings, and the growing tension within their family, the baby was the one pure and untouched thing they both clung to.

A nurse appeared in the doorway, smiling kindly. "Amelia, the doctor is ready for you."

Amelia stood, her legs feeling shaky. Lucas helped her up, and they followed the nurse down the hall into a small, softly lit examination room.

"Go ahead and lie down, dear," the nurse instructed. Amelia complied, her heartbeat quickening. Lucas stood by her side, his hand never leaving hers.

The doctor entered moments later, a cheerful older woman with a calming presence. "Good morning, Amelia, Lucas. Ready to see your little one for the first time?"

Amelia nodded, though her nerves made it difficult to speak. The doctor prepared the ultrasound machine, and Amelia felt the cool gel applied to her stomach.

"Alright, let's take a look," the doctor said, moving the probe gently over Amelia's abdomen.

The room filled with the faint sound of a heartbeat. Amelia's breath caught in her throat, and tears welled up in her eyes. "That's the baby?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Lucas leaned closer, his own eyes glistening. "That's our baby," he confirmed, his voice filled with awe.

The doctor smiled warmly. "That's right. A strong and healthy heartbeat. Everything looks great so far."

Amelia let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. For the first time in weeks, a wave of peace washed over her. In that moment, all the chaos and danger seemed to fade into the background.

But as the doctor continued to adjust the probe, her expression shifted slightly. It was so subtle that most people wouldn't have noticed, but Amelia did.

"Is something wrong?" she asked, her voice trembling.

The doctor hesitated for a moment before shaking her head. "Not at all," she said quickly, but her tone lacked its previous warmth. "It's just... I'm going to take a closer look. Hold on a moment."

Amelia exchanged a worried glance with Lucas. His grip on her hand tightened, offering silent reassurance.

The doctor studied the screen intently, her brow furrowing slightly. After a few moments, she spoke again. "I'll print these images for you. Everything seems fine, but I'd like to schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor the baby's growth."

Amelia nodded, but a sense of unease lingered. The doctor's earlier hesitation had planted a seed of doubt in her mind.

As they left the clinic, Amelia couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't quite right. Lucas noticed her silence and stopped walking, turning to face her.

"What's wrong?" he asked softly.

"I don't know," Amelia admitted, her voice barely audible. "The doctor said everything was fine, but... I feel like she was holding something back."

Lucas cupped her face in his hands, forcing her to meet his gaze. "Whatever it is, we'll deal with it together. I promise you, Amelia. We'll protect this baby, no matter what."

She nodded, leaning into his touch. His words gave her strength, but the unease in her heart remained.

That evening, Amelia sat alone in the nursery they had begun to prepare. The room was still bare, with only a crib and a few boxes scattered around. She ran her fingers over the edge of the crib, imagining the day their baby would sleep soundly within it.

Her phone buzzed on the nightstand, breaking her thoughts. She reached for it, expecting a message from Lucas or perhaps an update from the doctor. Instead, the screen displayed an unknown number.

Her heart skipped a beat as she opened the message.

"Enjoy the moment while it lasts. The baby isn't safe."

Amelia's blood ran cold. Her hands trembled as she read the words over and over. Who would send such a message? What did they mean?

Before she could think further, there was a loud crash downstairs. Her instincts kicked in, and she rushed out of the nursery.

"Lucas?" she called out, her voice echoing in the quiet house.

No response.

Her pulse quickened as she descended the stairs, her eyes scanning for any sign of him. The living room was empty, but the front door was slightly ajar, swaying in the evening breeze.

She stepped outside, the cool night air biting at her skin. The street was eerily quiet, and Lucas's car was gone.

Her phone buzzed again, and she hesitated before opening the new message.

Her fingers trembled as she unlocked her phone, dread pooling in her stomach. The new message glowed ominously on the screen.

"If you truly care about Lucas, don't call the police. Meet me at the old warehouse on Greyson Street in one hour. Come alone. Or else."

Amelia's heart raced as she reread the message. It was clear this wasn't just some empty threat. Whoever sent it knew where Lucas was and had taken him. She felt panic creeping in, but she forced herself to think.

Her first instinct was to call the police, but the warning in the text made her pause. If she involved anyone else, Lucas could be in even greater danger. She clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms. She couldn't risk his life.

Amelia glanced at the clock. She had 45 minutes left. Her mind raced as she tried to plan her next move. If she was going to face this alone, she needed to be prepared.

She grabbed her jacket, slipping a small pocketknife into her pocket for some semblance of protection. Her heart hammered in her chest as she thought about walking into the unknown, but she didn't hesitate. Lucas needed her.

The drive to the warehouse was nerve-wracking. The streets seemed darker than usual, the silence almost suffocating. Every shadow made her jump, her eyes darting to the rearview mirror constantly, as if she expected someone to be following her.

When she finally reached the old warehouse, it loomed in front of her like a monster from her nightmares. The windows were shattered, the building abandoned for years, yet the faint flicker of light from inside suggested someone was waiting for her.

Amelia parked a short distance away, taking a deep breath to steady herself. She couldn't let fear control her. If Lucas had been brave enough to face all their struggles, she could do this for him.

She pushed open the creaking door, her footsteps echoing in the vast, empty space. The smell of rust and decay filled the air, making her stomach churn.

"Hello?" she called out, her voice trembling slightly.

A figure stepped out from the shadows, their face obscured by a mask. They held up a phone, showing her a live feed of Lucas tied to a chair, his face bruised and his eyes blazing with defiance.

"Amelia," the masked figure said, their voice distorted. "You're brave to come. But bravery has its price."

Before she could react, the lights in the warehouse shut off, plunging her into darkness.

To be continued...
