Chapter 12: The Battle at the Arkanis Temple
---
Shadows Strike
The cloaked figure stood tall at the temple's entrance, an aura of darkness radiating from him, cutting through the air like icy blades. Voidus creatures began creeping out of the shadows he conjured, filling the room with low growls and an oppressive presence.
"Your runes are the key to this world," he said, his voice echoing ominously. "But you are unworthy of them, Kano. This world is better destroyed than left in the hands of someone like you."
Kano gripped his sword tightly, the runes on his body glowing brighter and forming even more intricate patterns. "You talk too much. If you want to destroy me, come and try!"
The first Voidus creature lunged, its body a mass of shifting, liquid-like darkness moving at incredible speed. Kano slashed through it with his blade, only for two more to attack from either side. Dorian and Reina moved quickly to cover his back.
"Kano, focus on him!" Dorian shouted, blocking another creature's strike with his shield. "We'll handle the rest!"

Destructive Magic
Meanwhile, Lyra and Tharn worked in unison to keep the swarm of Voidus creatures at bay. Lyra's wind magic created barriers and cut through clusters of creatures, while Tharn's massive hammer smashed those that ventured too close.
"They're tethered to him!" Lyra exclaimed, unleashing a powerful blast that obliterated several creatures. "We need to cut off their source!"
"He is the source!" Tharn replied, pointing his hammer toward the cloaked figure.
The figure merely smirked, raising his hand to summon a massive magic circle above them. The circle spun rapidly, emitting tendrils of dark energy that flowed into the Voidus creatures, causing them to grow larger and stronger.
"We're running out of time!" Reina shouted, loosing a magic-infused arrow at the figure. It shattered midair, repelled by an invisible barrier.

Kano vs. the Cloaked Figure
Kano stepped forward, locking eyes with the enemy. He knew this fight couldn't be avoided. The runes on his body flared, their blue light cutting through the surrounding darkness.
"You rely too much on power you don't understand," the figure mocked. "Your runes are mere tools. Without control, they'll destroy you."
"That's not going to happen," Kano replied. He raised his sword as the runes on his body converged into the weapon, transforming it into a blade of pure light.
The figure stepped forward, shadows coalescing into a dark blade in his hand. "Then prove to me you deserve to live."
The clash between Kano and the cloaked figure was like a storm. Each strike of their swords sent shockwaves through the temple, shaking its ancient pillars. The figure's attacks were relentless, each swing of his shadowy blade aiming not just to wound but to shatter Kano's resolve.
But Kano refused to falter. Reina's words echoed in his mind—you're not alone. He studied the figure's movements, seeking and exploiting the smallest gaps in his defense.

The Runes' Truth
In the midst of their duel, the runes on Kano's body suddenly erupted with an intense light, forcing the cloaked figure to retreat momentarily. A low rumble echoed through the chamber as the central altar began to tremble.
Lyra stared at the altar in awe. "The runes… they're resonating with Kano!"
From the altar, a glowing hologram emerged, forming a circle inscribed with ancient symbols. A voice, calm and authoritative, filled the room as if speaking from another era.
"You are the guardian of balance. The Primordial Runes are not weapons; they are the key to protecting this world from destruction."
The cloaked figure's expression darkened. "Enough!" He raised his hand to unleash a blast of dark energy at the altar, but the attack was intercepted by a barrier of light emanating from Kano's runes.
"I understand now," Kano said, his voice steady and resolute. "These runes don't just give me power—they're here to protect this world."
With newfound determination, Kano launched a decisive attack. His blade, now fully imbued with the energy of the Primordial Runes, cleaved through the figure's shadowy sword in a single strike.
---
A Pyrrhic Victory
The cloaked figure staggered back but showed no signs of defeat. Instead, he chuckled softly. "You're strong, Kano. But this war is far from over."
With a wave of his hand, he opened a dark portal beneath him. "I'll return. And when I do, you'll understand what it truly means to be the 'key.'"
Before Kano could stop him, the portal closed, leaving only silence in its wake. Exhausted but resolute, Kano stood in the center of the chamber, his mind racing with questions.
Reina approached and placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "You did your best. We're alive, and we've found new clues."
Kano nodded, though he couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of a much larger battle.

A New Clue
After the battle, the team examined the altar closely. Lyra discovered an inscription beneath it, revealing a new location: a mysterious island deep within the Aetheric Sea.
"That island could be where the next Fragment is hidden," Lyra said. "But reaching it won't be easy."
Dorian sighed. "Do we ever get a break?"
"This isn't just about us," Kano said. "If we don't act, this world will fall into darkness."
With a new map in hand and their resolve stronger than ever, Kano and his team prepared for their next journey, unaware of the dangers awaiting them in the uncharted waters of the Aetheric Sea.
