Iris couldn't argue further, knowing she wouldn't win this conversation with Emerald.
After dinner, Alaric had to leave, saying he had something to take care of. When Emerald went to the front desk to pay, she discovered the bill had already been settled.
Gio and Iris walked her back to her apartment building.
"Ember, are you sure you don't want us to help you organize?"
"I can manage on my own. I wouldn't want to disrupt your evening."
Emerald said goodbye and stepped into the elevator.
"Ding—"
When the doors opened, she found Alaric leaning against the wall, smoking a cigarette.
Emerald sighed, feeling a sudden headache. "Mr. Corrigan."
Alaric extinguished the cigarette and stepped closer, his voice steady and leaving no room for argument. "Open the door."
Emerald opened the door.
