Chapter 7 - The Saboteur Strikes

Emma sat at her desk, fingers tapping nervously against the keyboard. The hum of the office seemed louder today, the silence between tasks more suffocating. Something was off-she could feel it in the pit of her stomach, like the calm before a storm. The crackling tension in the air only grew as the morning hours wore on.

Then the call came.

"Emma," Adrian's voice on the phone was clipped, urgent. "Get to the conference room now. We have a crisis."

Her heart dropped. This wasn't the usual "urgent" email or conference call. She had heard that tone from him before-something had gone terribly wrong.

She rushed out of her office, down the sleek, glass-walled hallways of Arcadia Corp's headquarters. Every step sounded like it reverberated along the sterile corridors and echoed her anxiety. She wasn't ready for what lay ahead, but it was too late to go back. Adrian had made it crystal clear: she was no longer an observer but an active participant in whatever game Arcadia was playing.

As she entered the conference room, the air was heavy with tension. The usual veneer of polish on Arcadia's top executives was absent, replaced by a cold, unspoken panic. They were all there-Adrian, of course, standing at the head of the table, his face set in a mixture of determination and something far darker. The others sat stiffly around the table: top managers, security leads, and financial officers, eyes darting between one another. They were all silent, their hands clasped tightly in front of them, the weight of the room pressing down on them like a storm cloud.

"What happened?" Emma asked as she slid into a seat beside Adrian.

Adrian didn't waste time on pleasantries. His cold gaze swept over the room, settling briefly on Emma. Then he turned to the team.

"Ladies and gentlemen," his voice was sharp, biting. "This morning, one of our most critical systems was breached. A hack. A large one. We've lost millions."

The room fell silent. The words seemed to hang in the air, not to be avoided, as if digging deep into Emma's gut. Her mind began to race. Arcadia was one of the most secure companies in the world; how was this possible? And now, at a time when things were so fragile?

"Who is behind it?" asked one of the executives, Eric Price, trying to hide a slight tremble in his voice.

Adrian's gaze went icy. "We don't know yet. But we will find out. I want all systems scanned, every line of code checked, and I want answers-now. No mistakes. It could be anyone-the hacker. It could be inside the company."

Emma's breath caught in her throat. Inside the company? The thought sent a shiver down her spine. Yet she wasn't surprised. She had long since suspected as much, after all she'd learned these past weeks.

Adrian's eyes flickered briefly to Emma, his sharp gaze assessing her. "Emma," he said, his voice firm, but with an undertone of something else, a silent understanding between them. "I need you to document everything from this point forward. Keep track of every conversation. Every lead. Everything."

Emma's pulse quickened. "What do you mean?"

"I mean it," Adrian said, leaning forward, his expression suddenly intense. "This isn't just about protecting Arcadia's assets anymore. Someone is sabotaging this company from the inside. I need you to observe everything. Discreetly. I trust you more than anyone in this room right now. Don't let anything slip by you."

Her mind spun. The weight of Adrian's words was heavy, too heavy. But she couldn't back down now—not when everything was unraveling so quickly. She nodded, her hands suddenly clammy against the tablet in front of her.

"Understood," she said, keeping her voice steady.

Adrian turned to the rest, his voice firming up: "This is a code red, people. I want full access to all system logs, and I want them on my desk in the next hour. No excuses."

The room shifted uncomfortably as the executives scrambled to follow his orders. Emma noticed the quick flicker of glances between some of them-the suspicious darting of eyes that betrayed more than they intended. It was now clear to her: distrust ran deep in Arcadia. But how deep?

Adrian didn't waste any more time. He moved toward the projector, pulling up the data of the compromised system. The numbers were staggering: millions of dollars siphoned, and the breach just left chaos in its wake. Whoever was behind this knew Arcadia's systems all too well-someone who knew exactly what he was doing.

Whoever did this was inside," Adrian said, his voice low, but every word carried the force of a command. "They knew exactly where to hit, and they knew exactly what would bring us down. We've been compromised, and it's worse than we thought."

Emma's mind was racing. She'd seen the cracks in the company's financial reports before-there were hidden discrepancies, things that didn't add up. But she hadn't connected the dots until now. The hack was just the latest in a series of calculated moves, a sabotage orchestrated to bleed the company dry from within.

As Adrian continued outlining the steps they'd need to take to secure the company's systems, Emma's attention drifted to the people in the room. Each of them was hiding something. She could see it in the tightness of their jaws, in the way their eyes avoided Adrian's gaze. There were whispers here—whispers of betrayals and hidden agendas. Emma was no longer just a bystander in this game. She was becoming part of the bigger picture.

The meeting dragged on for hours, but Emma's mind was elsewhere. She mentally counted every word Adrian uttered, every decision made, every word that could bring them closer to the truth. There was no room for error now. Someone in this room, or someone close to Arcadia, was trying to tear it down from the inside.

As the meeting finally broke up, Emma found herself walking beside Adrian down the hall. The other executives scattered in different directions, each caught up in their own crisis, but Emma and Adrian were silent as they moved through the corridor, the hum of the building surrounding them.

Adrian glanced at her, his expression unreadable. "Are you ready for this?" he asked, his voice softer now.

Emma swallowed hard. "I don't know what is coming, but I won't back off. I am with you on this one."

A moment longer he looked into her eyes, as though weighing her words. After that, silent, he turned and headed toward his office, accelerating his footsteps.

Emma followed, her heart pounding in her chest. She had known this moment would come. The stakes had always been high, but now they were higher than ever. The saboteur was out there-and Emma was in the middle of it all.

She knew what she had to do. She had to trust herself. She had to trust Adrian. And most importantly, she had to find out who was behind this—and why they were willing to destroy everything Arcadia had worked for.

As they stepped into the elevator together, Emma felt the weight of the moment settle over her. There was no going back now. The storm was coming. And when it hit, it would change everything.
