Chapter 16 - Machine's Problem

For a long time, numbers kept changing rapidly on the machine's screen. It was the first time such rapid changes persisted for so long. Watching the machine work like this left everyone in the lab puzzled, with question marks on their faces. The lab was silent except for the sound of the machine, as everyone hoped anxiously, "It's about to start now… any moment." They all knew the machine was searching for the perfect multiverse. But in such a tense situation, every second felt excruciatingly long.

When the machine continued for about four minutes, everyone began suspecting a malfunction. Breaking the silence, Dr. Devendra asked Kabir, "Kabir, should we restart the machine?" Just then, the numbers on the screen began changing even faster, and suddenly, the multiverse traveling machine disappeared from the lab.

Kabir and Veer found themselves sitting in the machine in an open field. The field was covered with grass about a foot tall. The weather was warm, and clouds surrounded the sun. The field stretched endlessly, and about 300-400 meters away, dense forests and mountains were visible. Kabir and Veer stepped out of the machine, their faces beaming with joy. Kabir exclaimed, "Brother, we did it!" and shouted, "Hooo...!" Veer added excitedly, "Now, this is our world," spreading his arms wide and taking a deep breath. Kabir mimicked him, inhaling deeply, and said, "Brother, this place is so peaceful!" Veer replied, "Yes, it feels like we should just stay here forever." Kabir grinned, "Why worry? This world is ours now."

Suddenly, they heard a strange noise. Veer asked, "Did you hear that?" Kabir replied, "Yeah, I did." The sound came again. Kabir said, "Let's check it out." Both Kabir and Veer got back into the multiverse traveling machine.

The machine had been redesigned to function like a vehicle, equipped with four large wheels for traversing rough terrains. Its body was strong enough to withstand attacks from any animal, yet light enough for two people to carry. The machine could run on water and sunlight, as the scientists working on the multiverse project believed these resources would be available in any multiverse.

Kabir drove the machine while Veer sat in the adjacent seat. The vehicle moved slowly toward the source of the sound, which seemed to be coming from a dense forest at intervals. As they approached the forest, the sound grew louder.

Kabir and Veer had no idea what was making the sound, but it seemed like an animal. Kabir asked Veer, "What do you think it could be?" Veer replied, "I have no idea." Kabir added, "This isn't something we imagined during our multiverse planning." Veer admitted, "No, I never thought of such a creature, but we'll know for sure once we see it."

Just then, the sound of thunder roared. Veer remarked, "It might rain soon." Kabir and Veer were about 100 meters from the dense forest when Veer noticed large trees swaying as if something massive was moving through them. He told Kabir, "I think it's a huge animal." The sound suddenly stopped. Kabir guessed, "Maybe it's an elephant." Veer replied, "No, it's even bigger than an elephant."

At about 30 meters from the forest, Kabir stopped the vehicle. "We'll have to proceed on foot," he said. Veer agreed, "Yeah, the terrain ahead is too rough."

Both Kabir and Veer grabbed their guns and started walking toward the forest. They were only 10 meters from the vehicle when a massive dinosaur emerged from the forest. Seeing the dinosaur, Kabir and Veer froze for a few seconds. Then Veer shouted, "Run, Kabir!"

They ran toward the vehicle, but the dinosaur was also fast. Knowing their bullets wouldn't harm it, they refrained from shooting. Luckily, the dinosaur hadn't spotted them yet. They quickly ran toward a nearby hill and hid. The dinosaur, seemingly in a hurry, charged ahead and collided with the multiverse traveling machine. The impact sent the machine rolling several times before it hit a rock.

Once the dinosaur was out of sight, Kabir and Veer approached the vehicle. The exterior seemed intact, but the interior was damaged. Kabir asked Veer, "Did you select a dinosaur multiverse?" Veer replied, "No, I didn't. But I did think about dinosaurs briefly when choosing the multiverse animals."

Kabir was shocked. "What?! You thought about a multiverse with dinosaurs? This is not okay!" Veer defended himself, "I was only thinking about the animals we needed, but for a split second, dinosaurs came to mind. I didn't think such a brief thought would cause this much trouble."

Kabir examined the vehicle and said, "Look at its condition now." Veer sighed, "Yeah, but what can we do?" Kabir, visibly disappointed, tried restarting the machine. While the lights came on, the data was encrypted, as indicated on the screen. This meant Kabir and Veer couldn't return home.

Tension was evident on Kabir's face. Veer asked, "What's wrong? Why are you so worried?" Kabir replied, "We can't go back home."

Veer was shocked. "Why not?" Kabir explained, "All the multiverse data is corrupted." Veer asked, "Doesn't the backup exist?" Kabir answered, "Yes, but the drive containing it is lost."

Veer clapped sarcastically. "Wow, my friend, well done!" He added, "But we can still travel to another multiverse, right?" Kabir shook his head. "Not without the drive."

Veer asked, "Where did you drop it?" Kabir replied, "Probably outside when we were running. I was wearing it around my neck." Veer said, "Then why are we sitting here? Let's find it!"

Just then, a herd of dinosaurs began approaching them. One of the dinosaurs spotted Kabir and Veer and charged toward them. They quickly hid the vehicle near a hill and ran as fast as they could. The herd, now alerted, began chasing them. Thunder rumbled loudly, and a few drops of rain began to fall. Within seconds, it started pouring heavily.
