Chapter 12 - Vespera: First Contact.

The banging of a gunshot piercing through the air barely makes her blink as she slowly descends the staircase, the sound made by her red stilettos echoing with every step she makes.

I wonder who he dropped this time… his thirst for spilled blood never seems to surprise me, yet he refuses to have his meals fresh from the source. Ha! What's so good about blood bags? It comes in cold and tastes like stale iron, if that's even a thing. I hope the little lady is okay… Maybe I should see if I can pay her a visit when I'm back from the meeting. I want her looking at me, with those large, innocent brown eyes… Wait… I shouldn't be thinking about her like this…

Vespera shakes her head slightly as she gets to the front door, straightening her tightly fit black dress suit, her eyes trained on the closed door. She raises her right hand, pointing two fingers at the door, and lazily motions them towards her right, the door automatically flying open as she steps out, her right hand now pointing backward as she motions her fingers once again, the door closing behind her. A bodyguard awaits just beneath the front door steps as she appears. He quickly opens up the black unbrella he had been holding and falls in step beside her, holding it above her head as he keeps up with her pace, walking towards the black SUV that was awaiting her. The driver spots her before she gets close and hurries to step out of his driver's seat, rounding up the car to open the back door for her. She spares a second to look at her watch, cursing as she hastens her pace.

I'm late already. They are not going to be happy about this. All because of that stupid girl... Ugh, Silica… Why do I have to work with you on this? Just a little more... I have to tolerate you for a limited amount of time, then I will gladly do away with you. If he will not have your blood, I will...

She glares at the driver, "I will not be needing you today." He nods as he bows his head towards her, closing the door and moving away from the car. Vespera heads towards the driver's side, opens the door, and slides in. The guard steps back, closing the umbrella as he bows, stepping away from the car as she slams the car door. Starting the car, keying in the location on the GPS, and she steps on the gas pedal and leaves the compound.

After a boring hour of being on the road, she turns the car into a rough road, noticing how deserted the place was but also filled with trees all around. She notices some movement, and immediately, her foot steps on the breaks. Her eyes shoot towards her rearview mirror, and she notices that the path she has just come from is now covered in trees.

They sure do know how to cover their tracks. Slimy bastards…

She steps on the gas once more, driving slowly down the dust-filled path, her eyes shifting to check her GPS and noticing that she has quite a distance to cover to get to the destination. Her thoughts drift as her eyes focus on the road ahead.

What's with this impromptu meeting anyway? Did something happen? I thought we simply were allowed to communicate through the self-destructing letters... I've never really thought this day would come... and this soon...

The car arrives at a clearing, her eyes checking her rearview mirror once more, only for her to see a thick forest behind her. Confused, she checks the GPS pin and notices that it shows that she has arrived at the destination, but looking out through her windscreen, all she could see was a large field covered in dried grass. She takes out her phone, confirming the address that was sent to her by an anonymous and untracable number, seeing that she was in the right place. Cursing under her breath, she leans back into her seat, her eyes trained onto the plain field ahead, and that's when she notices it—a slight ripple in the air. Her eyes light up, a small chuckle escaping her lips as she steps on the gas once more. Not even halfway through the field, she sees the air ripple once more, the car slowly getting swallowed into the portal, her car now appearing in front of a short driveway leading to what looked like an old, rusty-looking three storey castle that has been abandoned for decades.

Why do they need to take so many precautions just for this meeting? I hope that everything will go well; if they don't, then I will be ready for them.

She parks her car overlooking the front door, contemplating whether to carry her guns or not. She finally settles on just strapping her 9mm glock in her waistband and steps out of the car, taking a moment to study her surroundings. There was no sign of life around her, only the stench of death and decay. The dried-up fountain to her left was filled up with small pebbles, debris, and weeds. She decides to head inside, climbing the three steps swiftly, but before she could bring her fingers up to open the door, her eyes widen from what she could vaguely make out, carved on the dusty wooden doors.

What is the meaning of this? Why is my family's crest carved on this wooden door? This dragon is the same one we have on our castle back home. What the fuck is going on right now?

As she concentrates on the door, she notices a slight ripple on the door. Sighing, she stretches her hand forward only for it to pass through and dissapear behind the door.

Vespera steps through the portal, no longer taken by surprise from the shift of venue once more. Finding herself in a wide, bright hallway, golden wall lamps light the way towards the massive door at the other end. She walks steadily, her firm posture and stoic facial expression masking all the confusion and uneasiness she felt inside. The clicking of her heels now nonexistent, the sound swallowed by the red carpet underneath her feet. The closer she got, the easier it was for her to hear voices and take note of the hearts beating on the other side of the door.

Three people, and from their voices and the rhythms of their hearts, I can tell they are men... But what is this uneasiness I can't seem to shake off? Well, fuck it…

Bringing up her fingers, the doors open slowly with just a swoosh of her hand. Stepping in, she's greeted by the sight of a large diamond-shaped table directly in front of her, and before she could take a moment to take in what she just walked into, she feels the hairs at the back of her neck stand and her eyes shoot to the floor from fear and the feeling of inferiority. She could feel all eyes now trained on her, especially since there were four.

How did I not hear the other person's heartbeat? Who are they, and how are they this powerful? I can sense the aura of their presence and gaze weighing my whole body and spirit down. FUCK…

She takes a deep breath and looks up, noticing two masked men each seated along one edge of the table. Her eyes scan the man who was directly in her field of view, his face hidden behind the black mask, leaving the eyes and lips exposed. He gestures for her to take the empty seat in front of her before he turns his head to his right to address the man seated on his right, unintentionally revealing the black scorpion crest etched on his neck in black ink.
