Chapter 18 - Unspoken Tensions

[Peter's POV]

—Sunday morning —

As we made our way downstairs, I noticed that the cut on my lip had already healed without leaving a scar. Thank goodness—I didn't want Aunt May asking questions. The atmosphere felt thick with unspoken words.

Aunt May was already in the kitchen, bustling about as the delicious smell of pancakes and bacon filled the air. My heart raced, and I glanced at Gwen, who walked beside me, her cheeks still flushed from the events of the previous night. She was trying to keep a straight face but failing miserably.

I knew I had to calm my emotions and hormones. If I let my feelings control my actions, it could be detrimental to our future. As much as I wanted to give in to my desires and fuck her senseless, I couldn't—not yet.

Breakfast was tense and awkward, the air heavy with unspoken words. I sat across from Gwen, stealing glances at her as she pushed her food around on her plate, her cheeks still pink from the memories of our close encounter. Aunt May, ever perceptive, seemed to sense the awkwardness hanging in the air.

"So, why do you both look like…?" Aunt May asked her tone light and teasing, a playful glint in her eye. My heart raced as I tried to maintain a nonchalant demeanour.

"What, May? She's just flustered because she walked into my bedroom and saw me half-naked," I replied, a smirk tugging at my lips.

"Peter…" Gwen looked up at me, silently pleading for me to stop teasing her, which only made her more adorable.

"Alright, Peter! Don't tease your girlfriend," Aunt May interjected with a grin, clearly amused.

I nearly choked on my orange juice. "Aunt May, we're just friends," I said quickly, trying to deflect the conversation. But the way Gwen's eyes darted to mine told me she wasn't buying it.

"Just friends, huh?" Aunt May raised an eyebrow, giving me a knowing wink. I kept my expression straight, but I could feel the heat radiating from Gwen as she glanced at me, her expression a mix of amusement and confusion.

"Right," Gwen said, her voice slightly shaky. "Just friends." But the way she said it felt loaded as if we both knew there was so much more beneath the surface. Maybe it was true, but I reminded myself to stay calm.

Aunt May continued to serve us, her smile unwavering. "You know, it's great to see you two spending so much time together. It's important to have someone special in your life."

"Yeah, we're going to watch movies and spend time together. We rarely get a break from all the school projects," I said, glancing at Gwen, who looked confused. I winked at her, not revealing that I was planning to train her superpowers.

After what felt like an eternity, breakfast finally came to an end. Aunt May cleared the table, humming to herself, while Gwen and I exchanged furtive glances, the tension between us palpable. I could feel the weight of the unspoken words hanging in the air, and I knew we couldn't avoid it much longer.

"Are you ready to train?" I asked, trying to shift the focus away from the awkwardness. "We should head to the old construction site."

"Yeah, let's go," Gwen replied, her voice a little too eager, as if she were trying to escape the lingering tension of breakfast. We both stood up, and I noticed her fidgeting with her hair—a telltale sign of her nerves.

Once we arrived at the construction site, the towering skeletons of buildings loomed over us, a perfect backdrop for our training. I took a deep breath, trying to shake off the remnants of breakfast and focus on the task at hand. But as we began to stretch and warm up, I could sense Gwen's eyes on me, her expression a mix of curiosity and something deeper.

"Peter," she finally said, breaking the silence. "About this morning…"

I turned to her, pretending to be confused. "Yeah?"

"What happened… back at your place?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "I mean, it felt like we were about to… you know."

"We were about to what, Gwen?" I asked with a playful smile, watching her expression as she tried to gauge whether I was teasing.

"Peter! Can you stop? You know what I mean!" she said, her tone grumpy but endearing.

"Alright, alright…" I chuckled, thinking about how to mix truth with a little lie.

"Ehem… remember I told you last time that I also got bitten by a radioactive spider at Oscorp, but I didn't manifest my powers until now?" I said, adopting a serious tone.

"Yes?" she replied, her brows furrowing.

"Wait… don't tell me you…"

"Yes, Gwen, I have spider powers just like you", I said, excitement bubbling in my voice.

I shot a web from my wrist, watching it stick to a nearby beam, then jumped up in an acrobatic motion, hanging upside down as my loose t-shirt fell over my face, revealing my well-defined abs.

"Ah… yes… true…" Gwen mumbled, her eyes wide as I landed back on my feet in front of her.

"And what does that have to do with what happened this morning?" she asked, still trying to process everything.

"Well, think about it. We both have spider powers now, and our genes are almost identical. We may be producing pheromones, just like spiders do to attract mates. That's why everything felt so intense between us."

Gwen's eyes widened as she processed my words, and I could see her cheeks flush a deeper shade of pink. "So you're saying we were… reacting to our powers?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Uhm… yes and no," I replied, not wanting her to think that everything that happened was just because of pheromones. Choosing my words carefully, I added,

"It just intensified our already existing feelings and desires." I leaned closer, my face inches from hers, and I could feel her breath quicken as she leaned into my palm.

Then, I stepped back, exhaling a deep breath to release the tension.

"As much as I want you, you also want me, right?" I asked with a smile.

"Uh, yes…" she blushed, but this time, she didn't back off from admitting her motions.

"But… I don't want to lose our friendship and our current relationship," she said, panic creeping into her voice. I patted her reassuringly.

"It's okay; I don't want to lose it either, so let's take everything slow, okay?"

She nodded, a bright smile spreading across her face. I could tell she was relieved to have indirectly admitted her feelings to her best friend.

"Okay, last time we trained about your reflexes and strength. Now, today, we'll focus on wall-crawling and a little bit of swinging," I said, winking as I handed her a mask. I put one on myself as well.

"You need it for…" Before she could process anything, I wrapped my arms around her slim waist and jumped off the ground, shooting a web to a nearby building and swinging us into the air.

"PETER! WHAT JUST—" she screamed, gripping me tightly, her chest pressed against mine, igniting the fire inside me.

"Shh… just watch what I do and learn," I said, holding her securely as I demonstrated the basics of swinging, even though I was still a newbie myself.
