Chapter 1 - Memories of Yesterday

I'll never forget the smell of freshly cut grass and the sound of children's laughter that filled the air on warm summer days. It was a smell and a sound that brought me back to a time when life was simpler, when my heart was whole, and when I was still naive enough to believe in fairy tales.

As I stood in my small backyard, sipping coffee and watching the sun rise over the horizon, I couldn't help but feel a pang of nostalgia. It had been ten years since I graduated from high school, ten years since my life had changed forever.

I thought about the girl I used to be, the girl who had been so full of life and hope. She had been a girl who believed in love, who believed that true love could conquer all. But that girl was gone now, replaced by a woman who was wiser, more cautious, and more guarded.

As I stood there, lost in thought, I heard the sound of my phone ringing from inside the house. I sighed, knowing that I had to answer it. I walked back into the house, coffee still in hand, and picked up the phone.

"Hello?" I said, trying to sound more awake than I felt.

"Vivienne, it's Emily," my best friend said, her voice bubbly and energetic. "What's up? You sound like you just woke up."

I laughed, feeling a little more awake now. "I did," I said. "What's up with you? You sound like you're ready to take on the world."

Emily chuckled. "I am," she said. "I just got tickets to a charity gala tonight, and I was thinking that you should come with me."

I hesitated, unsure if I was ready to face the crowds and the noise of a charity gala. But Emily was persistent, and eventually, I agreed to go with her.

As we made plans for the evening, I couldn't shake off the feeling that this was going to be a bad idea

I tried to brush off the feeling, telling myself that I was just being paranoid. But the feeling lingered, and I couldn't help but wonder what the night had in store for me.

After I got off the phone with Emily, I decided to take a shower and get ready for the day. As I stood under the warm water, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. Maybe tonight wouldn't be so bad after all.

But as I was getting dressed, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. And for a moment, I saw the girl I used to be staring back at me. The girl with the broken heart, the girl who had been left behind.

I felt a pang of sadness, and I quickly looked away. I didn't want to think about the past, not today. But as I turned to leave the room, I couldn't shake off the feeling that the past was about to come crashing back into my life.

I pushed the thought aside and focused on getting ready for the day. I had a lot to do before the gala tonight, and I didn't want to be late.

As I was finishing up my hair, I heard a knock at the door. It was Emily, dropping off the tickets for the gala.

"Hey, girl!" Emily said, as she handed me the tickets. "I'm so excited for tonight! You're going to love it."

I smiled, trying to match Emily's enthusiasm. "I'm sure I will," I said. "Thanks for getting us tickets."

Emily grinned. "No problem, happy to do it. Now, let's get ready for a night to remember!"

As Emily left, I couldn't help but feel a sense of trepidation. What was tonight going to bring? Was I really ready to face whatever lay ahead?

I took a deep breath and pushed the thoughts aside. I would deal with whatever came my way, one step at a time.

The rest of the day flew by in a blur. I spent the afternoon running errands and getting ready for the gala. As the sun began to set, I took a moment to collect my thoughts.

I stood in front of the mirror, smoothing out my dress and checking my hair. I looked...okay. Not great, not terrible. Just okay.

As I turned to leave the room, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. And for a moment, I saw the girl I used to be staring back at me. The girl with the broken heart, the girl who had been left behind.

I felt a pang of sadness, and I quickly looked away. I didn't want to think about the past, not tonight. So I took a deep breath and pushed the thoughts aside. I would deal with whatever happened anyway, one step at a time.

As I made my way to the living room, I heard the sound of the doorbell ringing. It was Emily, here to pick me up for the gala.

"Hey, boo!" Emily said, as I opened the door. "You look stunning! I love that dress on you."

I smiled, feeling a little more confident. "Thanks, Emily. You look amazing too."

Emily grinned. "Thanks, I was hoping to make a statement tonight."

As we made our way to the car, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement. Maybe tonight wouldn't be so bad after all.

The drive to the gala was quick and easy, and before I knew it, we were pulling up to the venue. It was a beautiful old mansion, with sprawling gardens and a grand entrance.

As we stepped out of the car, I felt a sense of awe wash over me. This was definitely going to be a night to remember.

Emily took my arm, and we made our way into the mansion. The foyer was filled with people, all dressed to the nines and sipping champagne.

I felt a little overwhelmed, but Emily just smiled and led me through the crowds. We made our way to the ballroom, where the gala was being held.

As we entered the ballroom, I was struck by the sheer scale of the event. There were hundreds of people here, all dressed in formal attire and mingling with each other.

Emily and I made our way to the bar, where we ordered a couple of glasses of champagne. As we sipped our drinks, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease.

Something didn't feel right. And then, I saw him.

Rico.

My ex-boyfriend.

The boy who had broken my heart into a million pieces.

He was standing across the room, looking more handsome than ever. His eyes locked onto mine, and I felt a jolt of electricity run through my body.

What was he doing here?

And why did he look so...intense?

I felt a sense of panic wash over me, and I quickly turned to Emily. "I need to get out of here," I whispered. "Now."

But Emily just smiled and shook her head. "No way, Vivienne. You're not going anywhere. You need to face your past, and Rico is definitely a part of that."

I glared at Emily, but she just laughed and took my arm. "Come on, let's go mingle. I'm sure Rico will come find us eventually."

As we made our way through the crowds, I couldn't help but feel a sense of trepidation. What was Rico doing here of all places?, and Although I'm not a gambler I could bet it had something to do with me but the thing is what?... what could he possiblywant from me?

I was about to find out.
