Chapter 11 - Knowledge Retrieval

A knock at the door brought Caleb out of his focused session.

'Must be the meal I ordered.' He got up and went to open the door.

"The meal you ordered, sir."

A young and beautiful blonde lady in a maid outfit said with a beaming smile. In her hand was a tray with steaming potato stew and a small cup of water.

"Ah, thanks."

Caleb took the dish and tipped the fair lady with a couple of copper coins.

"Thanks for the tip." She replied with a smile and disappeared.

Caleb's stomach growled again, urgently demanding food as the sweet aroma of the stew filled the air.

"Come down, buddy. Food is served."

He quickly went to sit down and immediately began wolfing down his food.

'Not bad.'

While the food tasted different from what he was used to, it did have its own appeal.

As he ate, his mind drifted back to the small scuffle he had with his killers.

'M moves were unrefined at all. The only advantage I had was my speed and power. I can't remain like this.'

He brought back the status window and began skimming through to find something that could help his situation.

Growing up in a world where fighting skills were not a necessity, Caleb had no need nor the time for it.

Aside from what he saw on TV and mimicked, he had nothing special. But in this new world, fighting skills were a necessity in order to survive.

'There's also the fact that I may at some point have to take a life.'

His expression turned gloomy when he thought about it. One couldn't just switch from a no-kill world to one where killing was almost a daily requirement.

[Memory Encoding]

Caleb gazed at this function for a second and then clicked on it to read the description.

[Access and retrieve genetic information about learned skills, knowledge and bloodline history.]

"Bingo."

Caleb smiled in satisfaction once he got what he wanted. It was almost as if the system knew what Caleb would need in his new world.

For the next several minutes, Caleb accessed the genetic information stored in his genes, retrieved what he needed and then prompted the system to transfer the knowledge to his brain.

As the familiar energy washed over him, he felt his head hurt a bit, his muscles twitch as they recalled all the muscle and reflex actions it had learnt and then common knowledge about who the original Caleb was, the world he was in its dynamics.

"I see…"

He muttered with a profound look in his eyes, going over everything and what he learnt left him slightly surprised.

The world he lived in was called Elvoran which had multiple races with humans as the major population.

Then, there were the demon population as well and while they were in conflict with the other races, nothing serious had occurred yet, at least from what the previous Calen knew.

What was more, magical energy in the atmosphere didn't just come from anywhere as they originated from the dungeons found all over the world.

These dungeons were ranked according to the level of threat they posed and periodic subjugations needed to be carried out to prevent monster tides if adventurers' activities around the dungeons were low.

It was a job for the royals of each land to ensure they had no tides that could level their kingdom. Of course, the guilds played their roles as well.

Naturally, there were beasts found around the many forests in the Elvoran world. But unlike the monsters in the dungeons, the beasts were without cores but had mana organs like the people.

To absorb magical energy and grow strong, one had to acquire monster cores from the dungeon monsters with the more powerful ones granting more mana.

Of course, this only applied to increasing of strength. Mana naturally recovered over time once it was used and while slow, the cores could also help.

Then there was the fact that all beings were born with magical energy signatures that everyone could tell and while there were methods to hide them for certain classes of profession, that was the norm.

"This is why I stand out so much. I have no such signature. Probably because I'm not a native?"

He reasoned but he wasn't entirely sure as he needed to try refining a monster core to find out.

Also, he hadn't felt his mana replenish since he arrived here. There had to be a reason, but there was no rush.

Time was the one thing he now had in abundance. He had no loyalty to anyone and could move at his own pace.

Then there was the life of Caleb. From what he retrieved, Caleb was an orphan born in a city far from here.

He only ended up here due to circumstances after going through shit his whole life.

Fortunately for him, he picked up some skills along the way and spoiled to be an adventurer.

With his little talent, he learned a few combat skills and used that to climb the ranks, earning the title-rising star.

"But he took on a mission and the baron didn't like that…"

With a clear picture of his new world, Caleb was ready to face it with everything he had.

"And the baron will be my first step in my adventures."

He clenched his fists, feeling the thrill of adventure burn in him.

Though the combat prowess he retrieved was not anything special, it was more than enough.

By combining it with his super speed, strength and other superpowers, he was on his way to becoming a force unseen in the history of this world.

'With room for more growth.'

He grinned in delight and then went to his bed for a much-needed rest.

With the sun almost over the horizon and with no form of entertainment besides the taverns and 'other' activities, there was nothing to do.

Today was a fruitful first day and while a lot of pain was involved, it was still good.

When morning came, he would be ready to face the world of Elvoran.

Unbeknownst to him, the leaders of the town were in a meeting discussing his fate.
