Chapter 40 - Talking Through The Night.

Diane gently placed the cover on the child that Pratically cried herself to sleep. They decided not to take her to her room, since it might disturb her sleep, and since she seemed comfortable on their bed, they didn't mind letting her stay for the night. She was presently in the middle of the bed, Diego to the left, Diane to the right. "Are you still thinking about what she said?" Diane asked, as she gently stroked Leonia's hair. "No, I just feel kind of disappointed in myself. I wanted to give her every good thing in this life so she should keep smiling, and yet..." "You are not a god, Diego." Diane cut him off. "We all have our shortcomings, we are not perfect. Human beings always tend to make mistakes, so don't beat yourself up for it." Diane said. "All she wants is to spend more time with her brother, that's all." She added. "So try not to keep yourself in the office from dawn till dusk, hmm?" She said with a smile, a smile that said she too was annoyed about the affair. "I really can't tell If you are berating me or advising me." Diego said, a little confused. "I am doing both!" Diane exclaimed.(how myopic could you possibly be?) "You are such a workaholic, honestly. If not with me, at least spend some time with the kids." Diane said. "Do you wish for me to spend some more time with you?" As Diane heard that, her heart gave a particular thump. She looked away from him. "Don't you ever get tired of teasing me?" She asked, a little annoyed. "At this rate, your mockery will be the end of me." She said. "I am serious, Diane." "What?" Sge exclaimed, subconsciously turning to him. Well he was pretty serious, his face said it all. "But the contract..." "Why are you always so eager to bring that up?" Diego asked, getting a little annoyed. "I want to know you better as a friend, not as a lover." Diego said sternly. "Did you really have to be that specific?" Diane asked, astonished by his frankness. "I like getting straight to the point, not beating around the bush." Diego said, while lying down. "Besides, after our outing tommorrow, I will have Natasha to resume your lessons." He continued.

Diane laid on her back, staring at the ceiling. It was quite dark, but she wasn't sleepy yet. "Diego." She called out softly to the man, who had his back turned to her. "Are you asleep?" She asked. "I almost fell asleep." Diego replied, turning to her. "Is anything the problem?" He asked. "Well, you said you were going to tell me more about yourself." Diane said, her eyes shimmering. "Is now the right time and hour for that?" Diego asked, surprised at her courage. "But you promised!" Diane said, whining like a little child. "Alright, fine. Just don't wake Leonia up." He said.

"I really don't have much to talk about though" Diego said. "You Liar." Diane thought in her mind. "Alright, tell me a little about your parents then." She said. "My parents, really?" Diego asked, surprised at the subject matter she brought up. "Yes, really." Diane replied. Her gaze serious. Diego sighed. "Where do I start from now?" He said, as he half-laid on the bed, resting his chin on one hand. "I guess I will start from the basics, my parents were the best things that ever happened to me." He began. "Even though my father wasn't the eldest son, he still managed the affairs if his household with such prestige. I really admired him for that, the way every other family member obeyed his command without even thinking twice." He said. "How strict of a man was he?" Diane asked. "Not that strict though, to me at least. He was my very first friend. There was nothing that bothered me that I couldn't tell him about, no aspect of my life he wasn't aware of." He said. "He does hate one thing very Much though, and that is lying." He continued. "You see there was one time I broke a vase when I was five, and I placed the blame on Natasha.." "Why would you do that?" Diane asked, surprised. "Why do children do what they do?" Diego said. "I thought you don't like answering questions with questions." Diane said, while pouting her lips. "Because I was a child, and I was mischievous, even more so than Leonia is, and I didn't like the fact that I would be punished for it, and- wait a second, don't tell me you never felt that urge to pin the blame on your siblings as a child?" Diego asked, while asking himself internally why he was hearkening to her words. "Well, not if I can handle it." Diane said, looking away awkwardly. "Anyway, why did Natasha let you put the blame on her?" Diane asked. "That is something complicated about her that I don't seem to understand, even even as an adult." Diego replied. "She will rather go through pain than to see the ones that she cares for to suffer. If you want to find out that badly, why don't you ask her yourself?" Diego said. "Did you know what my dad did when he found out? That man Pratically starved me for three nights." "That doesn't seem that bad of a punishment, though. Diane observed. "Easy for you to say. All my favorite meals were served those three nights." Diego said. "What are your favorite meals?" Diane asked enthusiastically. Diego placed his finger on the bridge of his nose. "Diane, one topic at a time, please, it is already getting late as it is- I can't afford to digress." He said. "Fine." Diane grumbled. "He did feel bad though, because I took ill after that." Diego said. "I can't believe not eating your favorite food for three days can make you fall ill." Diane teased, a mocking smile hanging on her lips. "If you continue to act like this, I will stop telling the story." Diego threatened. "It was a joke, it was a joke!" Diane swore. "So what did your dad do?" Diane asked. Her eyes began to droop at this point. Diego's voice was truly very- captivating, especially when he smiled when talking about his father. 'If thus is what can get you to smile, then I will talk about your parents more often.' Diane thought. "Well, he did make it up to me, what else could he have done. My mom, would let him know no peace." "Are you a mommy's boy?" Diane sleepily asked. "I beg your pardon?" Diego sounded perplexed. "You said father but when referring to your mother, you said mom. I was wondering why that was so." Diane said, her voice muffled and almost incomprehensible at this point. Damn it- was this man a natural Sedative? Just mere hearing the sound of his voice could make anyone feel relaxed. "No, I am not a- whatever you called it. I used that word because out of the two of them, my mom is the one that gets me the most. She.. Diane?" Diego began, when he saw Diane's head buried under the sheets. "Silly girl, are you trying to suffocate yourself?" He asked no one in particular. "I will continue the story next time." Diane's eyes sprang open. "I am still awake!" She said, bolting upright, but Diego wasn't buying it. "You are exhausted, and you have a long day ahead of you, so go to sleep now." He said, giving her a small smile. Diane Laid back, his handsome features now eternally Engraved in her mind. "Go to sleep." Diego repeated himself, when he noticed that she was still staring at him. Her eyelids continued to grow heavy until...
