Chereads / The Mafia Marriage Contract / Chapter 36 - Web of Lies

Chapter 36 - Web of Lies

The air in the Moretti mansion was thick with tension. Amelia's revelation of her pregnancy had brought a flicker of joy, but it was fleeting. Dante found himself wrestling with conflicting emotions: elation for the future and unease from the shadows of his past and present.

Dante was in his study the next evening, poring over documents. His mind was restless. Though Liliana was no longer officially part of his operations, her persistence was unnerving. Every deal she had brought to the table seemed more intricate than it appeared.

As he scanned a particularly dense contract, his phone buzzed. It was an encrypted message from one of his operatives:

"We have a leak."

Dante's grip tightened around the phone. He immediately called Luca.

"Meet me in the safe house. Bring only trusted men," Dante said tersely.

Luca's voice was calm but sharp. "On it. What's the move?"

Dante didn't answer. He hung up, grabbed his gun, and left without telling Amelia where he was going.

Amelia had been sitting in the living room, resting her hand on her belly, when she saw Dante leave in a hurry. No explanations. No goodbyes.

Her intuition, sharper than ever, told her something was wrong. She remembered Eva's earlier warning about Liliana's mysterious phone call and how Liliana had been unnervingly present.

Unable to shake her unease, Amelia called Eva into the room.

"Eva, I need you to keep an eye on Liliana. Discreetly. If she makes another move, I want to know immediately," Amelia instructed.

Eva nodded, her loyalty unwavering. "Consider it done, ma'am."

Amelia knew she couldn't sit idle. Something about Dante's behavior lately felt bigger than just business. She resolved to dig deeper.

Dante arrived at the safe house, a cold, desolate place hidden in the outskirts of the city. Luca and three of his most loyal men were already waiting.

"The leak... any idea who it is?" Dante asked, his voice cold and clipped.

Luca nodded grimly. "It's not just a leak. It's Liliana. She's been playing both sides."

Dante's blood ran cold. He slammed his fist on the table. "I should've cut her off completely!"

"It gets worse," Luca continued. "She's been feeding information to Mateo's allies. They're regrouping. And they're coming for us."

Dante's jaw clenched. Mateo's name was like poison in his veins. Though the man was dead, his network remained alive, a hydra growing more heads.

Back at the mansion, Amelia's instincts told her to act. She slipped into Dante's study and began rifling through his files. Her hands trembled as she stumbled upon a stack of documents bearing Liliana's name. They detailed partnerships, business ventures, and coded communications.

One letter stood out:

"To ensure the deal remains lucrative, you must ensure Moretti is distracted. The wife may prove to be his Achilles' heel. Use her if necessary."

Amelia's heart raced. Liliana wasn't just a nuisance she was a threat.

At the safe house, Dante and Luca devised a plan to eliminate the growing threat. But they hadn't anticipated how deep the betrayal went.

As they prepared to leave, the sound of approaching vehicles broke the stillness of the night.

"Move!" Dante barked.

The men scrambled for cover as bullets tore through the safe house walls. The enemy had found them.

Dante, gun in hand, fired back relentlessly. Luca covered his flank, taking out several attackers.

But they were outnumbered. One of Dante's men fell, clutching his chest, while another dragged him to safety.

Luca shouted over the gunfire, "We need an escape route, now!"

Dante's mind raced. He refused to let this be the end.

Back at the mansion, Amelia's unease reached a breaking point. She tried calling Dante, but there was no answer. Her heart pounded as she realized something was terribly wrong.

Her phone buzzed it was Eva.

"Ma'am, Liliana is here," Eva whispered. "And she's not alone."

Amelia's stomach dropped. She clutched her belly protectively, fear coursing through her veins.

"Keep her busy," Amelia said, her voice steady despite the panic rising within her. "I'll handle this."

Back at the safe house, Dante and his remaining men managed to fight their way out, though not without losses. Bloodied but alive, Dante's rage burned brighter than ever.

As they sped away in an armored vehicle, Luca glanced at Dante.

"She's going to pay for this," Luca said.

Dante's eyes darkened. "Liliana's made her final move. Now it's my turn."

Amelia paced the living room, clutching the incriminating letter she had found. The front door opened, and Dante stepped in, his face bruised and bloodied.

"Dante!" she cried, rushing to him.

He stopped her with a gentle hand, his eyes scanning her face. "Amelia, I'm fine. But we need to talk."

Amelia held up the letter

Dante's gaze burned into Amelia as he held the damning letter in his hand. He said nothing, but the silence was suffocating, wrapping around her like a noose.

She stood her ground, refusing to cower despite the dangerous glint in his eyes. "You can't just sweep this under the rug, Dante. Liliana is plotting against you and us. How long are you going to let her play this game?"

Dante's lips curled into a cold, humorless smile. "Careful, cara mia. You're speaking as if you have a say in how I handle my business."

Amelia stiffened. His tone was a stark reminder of who he was a man who didn't ask for permission or forgiveness.

"And you're speaking as if I'm just another one of your pawns," she shot back, her voice sharp. "I'm your wife, Dante, not some trophy you can control."

In a flash, Dante closed the space between them, his hand gripping her chin firmly but not enough to hurt. His eyes, dark and predatory, locked onto hers.

"You are my wife," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "Which means you'll learn to trust me even when I don't explain myself. I protect what's mine, Amelia. Always."

Her heart pounded in her chest, but she refused to look away. "And what happens when what's yours starts fighting back?"

For a moment, a flicker of amusement danced across his face, but it was gone as quickly as it appeared. "Then I remind her exactly who she belongs to."

The next day, Amelia woke up alone in their grand, cold bed. Dante's absence was a stark reminder of how he compartmentalized his life business and power always came first.

As she wandered through the mansion, she found herself in the library, flipping through old books to distract herself. Her thoughts were interrupted by Eva, who entered with an air of urgency.

"Amelia," Eva said quietly, "you need to be careful. Liliana isn't the only one you should be watching."

Amelia frowned. "What do you mean?"

Eva hesitated, glancing around to ensure no one else was listening. "Dante may love you, but he has a way of using people's weaknesses against them even the ones he cares about. If you want to survive in his world, you need to start thinking like him."

Amelia's grip tightened on the book in her hands. "I'm not playing Dante's games, Eva."

"Then you'll lose," Eva said simply. "And in his world, losing isn't an option."

Later that night, Dante returned, his suit disheveled, his face etched with the strain of the day.

Amelia waited for him in the living room, her arms crossed. "Are you going to tell me what happened?"

He looked at her, his expression unreadable. "It's handled."

"That's not an answer," she pressed. "Dante, I'm not some naive girl you can keep in the dark. If we're in danger, I have a right to know."

Dante's jaw tightened, and in an instant, he was in front of her, his hands gripping her arms. "Do you have any idea what I've done to keep you safe? What I'm willing to do?"

She flinched at the intensity in his voice but didn't back down. "Then stop shutting me out! You can't protect me by keeping me in the dark. That's not how this works."

His grip loosened slightly, but his gaze remained unrelenting. "This is how it works, Amelia. My world is built on secrets and shadows. The less you know, the safer you are."

She shook her head, tears threatening to spill. "That's not love, Dante. That's control."

For a moment, the mask slipped, and she saw the vulnerability beneath the devil's exterior. "Maybe control is all I know," he admitted softly. "But it's the only way I can keep you alive."

Elsewhere, Liliana sat across from Viktor in her dimly lit penthouse, the city skyline twinkling behind her.

"Dante will come for me," she said, her voice calm but deadly.

Viktor raised an eyebrow. "And you're not worried?"

Liliana smirked, swirling the wine in her glass. "Worried? No. Dante thinks he's the devil, but he forgets hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. If he wants a war, I'll give him one."

"What about the wife?" Viktor asked.

Liliana's smile grew colder. "Amelia is his Achilles' heel. He'll crumble the moment she's in danger. But I'm not going to hurt her not yet. Breaking Dante means breaking her first."

The next morning, Dante summoned Marco and Luca to his private office.

"Liliana's making her move," he said, his voice clipped. "She's using Viktor to bait me. We're going to turn the tables."

"What's the plan?" Marco asked.

Dante leaned forward, his eyes glinting with dark determination. "We give her what she wants a false sense of victory. And then, we destroy everything she's built."

Luca nodded, but there was unease in his expression. "And Amelia?"

Dante's gaze darkened. "She doesn't need to know the details. Keep her safe. That's all that matters."

That evening, Dante found Amelia in the garden, sitting beneath the soft glow of the moonlight.

"You shouldn't be out here alone," he said, his voice softer than she expected.

She glanced at him, her expression guarded. "I needed some air. It's suffocating in that house."

He sat beside her, his presence overwhelming. "I know you're frustrated, Amelia. But you have to trust me."

She looked at him, her eyes searching his. "Trust isn't the problem, Dante. It's the lies. You say you're protecting me, but it feels like you're protecting yourself your secrets."

He reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "My secrets are what keep us alive."

"And what if they destroy us instead?"

For a moment, Dante said nothing. Then, he leaned closer, his lips brushing against her ear as he whispered, "If I destroy us, it'll be because I'm trying to save you. And I'll burn the whole world down before I let anyone take you from me."

Amelia shivered at the raw intensity in his voice, torn between fear and desire. She hated the power he had over her but part of her craved it, too.

"This man keeps changing, he is much more unreadable than I thought'' Amelia thought

He is always blowing hot or cold each time.....
