Chapter 1 - 1. The Receipt

"Oh my God, girl! Sometimes I just wish I had a washing machine, these clothes can be a lot of stress to wash by hand." Anna vents to her best friend.

She had her ear piece plugged in with the phone in her back pocket, while she sorts the clothes by separating the dark colours from the lighter ones.

"I know right?" She exclaimed in response to her best friend's comment from the other side of the phone,

"And Jacks Jean's trousers are too thick, but he never washes them, trust me, girl, my husband is a lazy ass when it comes to laundry. But I don't care because he is a good cook, I hate cooking."

As Anna sorted the clothes, she checked the pockets to ensure that neither her nor her husband had left something important in the pockets. One time she found an important slip that would have made her cry if it were washed with the clothes.

Ever since, Anna took her time to check every pocket one after another and today it seemed to be taking up so much time, mostly because she was talking to her friend.

"I mean, I'd rather do laundry than cook anything, and I can do laundry twice a week that's fine, but cooking is every day." She continued but paused when something caught her attention.

While her best friend was speaking on the other side of the phone, Anna took out a paper that was folded in half from one of Jack's jean trousers. She opened it to see what it was, hoping that it was a random receipt from a grocery store.

And it was. She immediately wanted to toss the small piece of paper to the side when she caught a glimpse of an item on the receipt.

"Diapers?" She muttered,

"Oh, sorry Tess, I got distracted." She quickly apologized to her friend, the item had taken her by surprise, especially considering that they didn't have a child, and neither did any of Jacks's family members that she knew about.

"Can I call you back please?" She requested and quickly dropped the call because the items on the receipt were unsettling.

"Who the hell is this for?" She wondered. For a start, the purchase was made two days ago, and the total cost was quite outrageous.

It could have been someone else's receipt, but Jacks's name was written on it, and it didn't make any sense why he purchased so many baby supplies after complaining to her about his financial struggles.

She has provided so much in the house for over a week, and she didn't earn so much from her freelance job as a writer. As much as she hates to admit it, the thought of Jack having a child elsewhere crossed her mind.

She tried to pave it off, but what other possible explanation could there be? For a start, she was infertile, and couldn't conceive a child, and this has been her biggest insecurity. Although Jack has sworn to love her with or without a child, she couldn't help but fear that he might get desperate and leave.

Thus everything was a reason to be scared, and this one was the worst. The evidence was clear to her, yet she tried not to overreact.

Standing up from the pile of clothes around her, Anna took the paper and was about to walk into the kitchen to ask Jack a few questions. But halfway she stopped like she had forgotten something. Anna returned to the clothes, and picked up the trousers which she got the receipt from.

She searched the other pockets but found nothing else in there.

"Okay." She sighed

"let's just get this one cleared out."

Out of the room, through the living room, until she got to the kitchen, Anna walked like nothing had happened. She tried not to be upset, having learned that a fight wouldn't get her the answers she needed, rather it'd matters worse than it already was.

"Jack?" She called his name from the kitchen entrance, her voice hinting that she wanted to inquire something of him.

"Huh?" Jack turned around, his brown eyes staring straight into his wife'

"What's up?" He asked, and as soon she began to approach him with a receipt in her hand, his heart skipped a beat. But that was for something else entirely.

"I was curious," Anna stated as she unfolded the receipts and handed them over to him.

"Are we expecting a baby or something?"

As soon as Jack saw the receipt, his heart began to beat faster. She had taken him so unaware and he wasn't prepared to answer the question she threw

at him.

'How did I not throw this away?'

"Nah… it's for a friend, he sent some money to me to help him purchase these things for his wife. He was at the hospital with her and couldn't leave because he was with the doctor."

Quite convincing, but Anna wasn't satisfied, and even though his words were plausible, she wanted to do her investigation.

"Oh, don't be upset." She apologized to him,

"I guess I started to overthink again."

"That's totally fine," Jack smiled, he drew he in for an embrace and kissed her on the forehead. But that was a big mistake on his end, because Anna felt his heart beating against his chest so rapidly.

"he's lying." She thought to herself, and this gave her more reasons to investigate, and gather more evidence before confronting him.

"Once I save up some money from my new job, we will try that procedure that the doctor suggested. Then you'll stop worrying yourself so much about everything."

"Yeah," Anna mumbled,

"I think the fries are burning."

"Oh shit!" He exclaimed and released her from his embrace to put off the stove.

"Could have been worse."

"I'll be outside washing their clothes at the tap, let me know when food is ready." She said with a smile and walked out of the kitchen without looking back.
