IMMORTAL QUEST
Chapter 46: Breaking the Chains
Mia's heart pounded as the world around her fractured like glass. The vision of the twisted forest dissolved, the dark shadows unraveling like threads. Scott's figure, once frozen in place, flickered and began to shift. The dark aura surrounding him started to dissipate, and his body softened beneath her touch. The coldness that had consumed him ebbed away, replaced by the warmth of her presence.
"Mia…" Scott's voice was hoarse, weak, but the sound of it was like a lifeline thrown in the midst of a storm. His eyes flickered open, and for a moment, he looked confused—disoriented. His hand grasped hers, and his grip tightened as if afraid that the world would slip away again.
"I'm here," Mia whispered urgently. "I'm not letting you go. We'll get through this. Together."
The darkness around them writhed and screamed in frustration, but Mia stood firm. She had made her choice, and there was no turning back now. Her love for Scott had been tested to its limit, and she had chosen to break through the shadows. The power that had threatened to consume them both now began to lose its grip.
Scott's breath slowed, his body relaxing in her arms. "I thought… I thought I'd lost you."
"You haven't," Mia said, a soft smile forming on her lips despite the gravity of the situation. "I won't let anything separate us. Not now, not ever."
But even as the shadows began to recede, Mia knew they weren't out of danger yet. There was still the matter of the final trial. The world around them hadn't returned to its normal state. Instead, the environment continued to shift, as though the trial was testing them in ways they couldn't yet understand.
Zarek's voice echoed once more, this time deeper, more urgent. "The trial is not yet over. The choice you made was but the first step. There will be others. Sacrifice is not a one-time test—it is a constant challenge. Are you prepared for the consequences of your decisions?"
Mia stood, pulling Scott to his feet, her gaze unwavering as she faced Zarek. The dark figure loomed in the distance, his presence imposing, but Mia felt no fear. Her resolve had solidified with the choice she had made. No matter what trials lay ahead, she would face them head-on, with her friends by her side.
"We're ready," Scott said, his voice now stronger, the faint trace of doubt gone.
Zarek regarded them silently for a moment, before nodding slowly. "Very well. You have passed the first trial, but the path ahead will demand more from you. The next test is one of unity." He raised his arms, and suddenly, the barren landscape began to shift once more.
This time, the world around them warped into something more familiar—something that felt like home. The harsh darkness of the trial receded into the background, and in its place, they were standing at the threshold of a city—an ancient city, with towering stone walls and grand arches. The air was thick with the scent of history, but something felt off.
Mia's senses heightened, and she immediately noticed the absence of people. The streets were eerily silent, as though the city had been abandoned for centuries. The buildings seemed weathered and worn, their surfaces cracked and crumbling. But amid the decay, there was a pulse of power—something ancient, something restless.
"Where are we?" Allison asked, her voice echoing off the stone walls. She looked around, her brow furrowing. "This place feels wrong."
"This is the city of the lost," Zarek explained. His voice seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once. "The city was once a great civilization, but its people fell to greed and corruption. They sought power at any cost, and in the end, they destroyed themselves."
Mia felt a chill run down her spine. She could sense the weight of the place, the tragedy embedded in the very stones beneath their feet. This wasn't just a city—it was a warning.
"There's a reason this city was abandoned," Theo said quietly. "And it's not just because of greed."
Zarek nodded, his gaze distant. "You are correct. The city's people were consumed by their thirst for power, but they were also betrayed by those closest to them. The greatest tragedy of this place is not the destruction of its people—it is the betrayal that occurred here."
Mia's heart skipped a beat. Betrayal. She could feel the word hanging in the air, its weight pressing down on them. The trials had shown them their deepest fears, their inner darkness, but this—this was something else entirely.
"Each of you will face a vision in this city," Zarek continued. "A vision of your greatest fear. A fear that is tied to your deepest bonds. A betrayal, either by a friend, a loved one, or yourself. Only by facing this betrayal head-on will you be able to pass the trial."
Scott's hand found Mia's, his grip firm as the weight of Zarek's words settled over them. Betrayal. The thought sent a shiver through her, but she pushed it aside. They had faced too much together to fall apart now.
"Let's face it," Mia said, her voice steady despite the uncertainty swirling around her. "We've made it this far. We'll make it through this too."
The ground trembled beneath them, and before Mia could react, the world around her dissolved once more. The city, the people, and the dark whispers of the trial vanished as if they had never been. What replaced it was a scene that made her blood run cold.
