IMMORTAL QUEST
Chapter 47: The Echo of Betrayal
Mia blinked as the world around her solidified, and the scene before her took shape. The familiar faces of her friends—Scott, Allison, Derek, Theo, and Malia—were gone, replaced by a vision of another time, another place. The air was thick with a cold that seeped into her bones. She looked around, and a chill ran through her as she realized where she was.
It was the house. Her house. But it wasn't the one she had left behind—it was a place from the past, from a time before the trials, before everything had changed. The walls were cracked and weathered, and the faint scent of dust filled the air, mingling with a sense of sorrow. It was as if time had stood still in this place, the once warm and welcoming home now transformed into something hauntingly cold.
Her heart raced as she took a step forward. She could hear voices—muffled, distant—but they were unmistakable. One was her own, calling out to someone, and another was a voice she knew all too well. A voice she had trusted. A voice that had once been her greatest ally. The voice of her mother.
But as Mia moved toward the source of the voices, something shifted. The door creaked open, revealing the scene inside. Her mother stood there, her back to Mia, but she was not alone. There, standing beside her, was Scott. His posture rigid, his eyes hard and distant, as if he were someone else entirely.
"No," Mia whispered, her breath catching in her throat. She wanted to call out, to step forward, but her legs felt like lead. The sight before her was like a cruel twist of fate.
She watched, frozen, as the scene played out.
"Mia wouldn't understand," her mother said, her voice filled with a mix of regret and something else—something colder. "But she's too young, too naïve to see the bigger picture. We can't keep pretending, Scott."
Scott's face was a mask, unreadable, but his eyes—they didn't meet her mother's. They didn't meet Mia's. They were cast downward, as though guilty of something unspeakable.
"Mia will be fine," Scott said, his voice low. "She'll never know what's happening. This stays between us."
"No," Mia whispered, her hand reaching out toward them, but the scene was slipping away, out of her reach. She wanted to scream, to ask what they were talking about, but the words caught in her throat.
Her mother turned to Scott then, and the look in her eyes was not one of a mother comforting a trusted friend, but something darker. "It's the only way to protect her," her mother said quietly, almost as if trying to convince herself. "You know that."
Mia's heart shattered as the truth settled in. Betrayal. The one person she had never suspected—the one person she thought she could always rely on—had been hiding something from her, something that involved Scott. She didn't know what it was yet, but she could feel it. The deceit ran deep, deeper than she could have imagined.
The scene shifted, and Mia found herself outside the house now, looking through the window at her mother and Scott. The two of them stood there, silent, as if unaware of her presence. The cold air nipped at her skin, but it was nothing compared to the ache in her chest. A wave of nausea rolled over her. She could feel the weight of their lies pressing down on her.
And then the worst part came.
Scott, standing with her mother, turned slightly. His eyes, once full of warmth and affection for Mia, now held something darker. Something Mia couldn't bear to see. It wasn't just guilt—it was something far worse. It was cold indifference.
"I'm sorry," Scott's voice echoed in the silence, but this time, it wasn't aimed at Mia. It was a whisper to her mother. "But it's for the greater good."
And with that, the scene around her shattered, the vision collapsing like a dream fading upon waking.

Mia gasped, stumbling backward as the world around her stabilized. Her breathing was shallow, panicked. She looked around frantically, her eyes wild, searching for Scott, for anyone. The familiar faces of her friends slowly began to form in the swirling fog, their voices faint but growing louder.
"Mia?" Scott's voice cut through the haze, and she whipped her head toward him. There he stood, looking at her with a mix of concern and confusion, his face full of worry.
"Scott…" Mia's voice faltered, the hurt of the vision still raw. "You… You weren't—" She stopped herself, unable to finish the sentence. The betrayal she had seen—it felt so real, so visceral. But was it truly Scott? Or had it been a trick of the trial?
Scott's brow furrowed, his gaze softening. "What's wrong? Mia, talk to me."
The words caught in her throat, but Mia forced herself to speak. "I saw something. It was a vision. My mom and you—" She couldn't bring herself to say it. The guilt of the trial, the truth behind it, weighed heavily on her.
Scott's face shifted, but there was no trace of the coldness she had seen in the vision. His eyes, always so warm, were filled with worry as he took a step toward her. "Mia, whatever you saw, I swear to you, I would never betray you. Not like that."
Mia closed her eyes, her heart pounding. She wanted to believe him. She had to believe him. But the vision had been so real, so haunting. She could still feel the weight of his indifference, like a knife through her chest.
The trial wasn't done with her yet.
"Sometimes, the trials show us what we fear most," Zarek's voice echoed from the shadows. "What you saw was a reflection of your own insecurities. But remember this: fear is a powerful thing. It can shape your perception. It can distort the truth."
Mia felt a wave of emotion wash over her, the uncertainty, the doubt, threatening to overwhelm her. She wasn't sure if she could ever truly know if Scott had betrayed her or if it had all been a cruel illusion. But deep down, she knew one thing for certain: This was a test. A test of trust.
"I believe you," Mia whispered, her voice shaky but firm. "But I have to learn to trust myself too."
Scott nodded, his face softening as he reached for her hand. "We'll get through this. Together."
But even as they stood there, facing the aftermath of the trial, Mia couldn't shake the feeling that the true test was just beginning.
