I was trapped in my house, about to burn to death in a house fire. Although I was disappointed by the fact that I wouldn't live past the age of sixteen, I was more concerned about the fact that I hadn't yet been able to run for President and change the world. I wanted to make and leave the world perhaps a little better than I had come into it.
I was dead, at least that is what I thought. Yet, I then awoke in an ethereal plane. Facing me was a man I had never met before, yet he seemed to know me. He wore red robes, had tan skin, and black hair tied up in a top knot. His eyes, with irises that looked as if they were made of gold, radiated heat, warmth, light, and life.
Welcome to the Spirit World, my young chosen. I tilted my head in confusion and thought, 'Was I not dead? What did he mean by "chosen"? And am I about to be thrown into another world like in one of those anime I watched sometimes?'. He laughed and said, "Yes, you are actually."
I looked at him and said, "Wait, did you read my mind just now?" He simply replied, "Yes, as a matter of fact, I did." "Okay, what exactly are you, and what is going on?" I asked, trying to maintain my confidence and composure so I wouldn't panic or freak out.
"Well, I shall explain the situation to you, my chosen," he said, and then proceeded to say, "I am a Spirit. I am known as Agni, the Spirit of the Sun, and I have chosen you to complete three tasks for me." "But you know nothing about me," I said. "Actually, I know you have no friends or living relatives to speak of, and you have spent most of your life mastering martial arts as well as weapon combat," Agni said, and then proceeded to say, "You also spent just as much time studying history, economics, philosophy, engineering, politics, and science."
He paused and then went on to say, "You've been receiving straight A's from middle school all the way through college, which got you admitted early because you weren't just a great student and athlete, despite the fact that you're still sixteen. You also received some military strategy training. You possess much passion, desire, discipline, and ambition, but you also have the drive to help not just yourself but everyone around you. You are not just driven; you are also kind, compassionate, and caring, not just for yourself but for everyone around you."
I stared dumbfounded and then said, slightly embarrassed, "Okay, so you do know things about me. What exactly are these tasks you want me to do?" Agni looked at me and said, "Your first task is to stop the death of my friend Tui, the Moon Spirit, by Admiral Zhao." I then realized and said, "You are that Agni from Avatar: The Last Airbender, so you are sending me to the Four Nations, then." He was pleased with that and said, "Yes, I am. Now, your second task is to help the Avatar stop the Fire Lord, and your third task is unique compared to the other two. I want you to become the next Fire Lord."
I raised an eyebrow and said, "But isn't that supposed to be Zuko? At least that's what happened in the show." Agni nodded and said, "While that is true, Zuko would be a good Fire Lord, he lacks ambition. So, I thought it would be best if we had a more well-rounded and ambitious person become Fire Lord instead." He then added, "While it may seem a little harsh for me to just replace him with someone else, I think he has suffered enough under the weight of the crown." He paused and proceeded to say, "You, however, know just as much, if not more, than any politician, general, or royal family in the Four Nations."
I breathed and said, "Okay, so how do we start this? Are you going to put me in the Fire Nation?" "No, you are going to the Southern Water Tribe about three months before Sokka and Katara found the Avatar." I raised an eyebrow. "Why so early, and why there?" I asked. "I believe it would be better if you had some time to train and get to know them before you begin your journey with Aang." I nodded. "Why do I need to train for three months beforehand? I already mastered martial arts and weapons combat, like you said before?"
Agni said, "Because I am going to give you fire bending to help you on your journey, and besides, what future Fire Lord can't fire bend?" My eyebrows shot upwards. "You're going to make me a bender?" I inquired. He nodded and said, "Yes, and your bending will be unique. It will be true fire, and I will also give you a very special fire bending scroll that will help you along the way."
I nodded. "Ok, will I have the same appearance I had in my old world?" I asked. He nodded and said, "You will look the same, but your eyes and clothes will be different. Your eyes will be golden like mine, and your clothes will appear similar to those of Fire Nation citizens."
I said, "I'll have to come up with a cover story until I meet up with Aang and begin our journey." He nodded. "I think you should be honest about your origins and mission with Aang, Katara, and Sokka as well. You four have to be able to trust each other and believe in each other," he said with a smile. "Ok, thank you for the chance," I said.
With a smile on his face, he said, "I know you can help the people of the world." And with a clap of his hands and a blinding flash, I was suddenly in the middle of a snow-covered plain. "I need to learn how to do that flash-clap; it could come in handy sometime," I said. I took a chance to take stock of what I had. I had a red bag with some scrolls in it and a set of red clothes, a bit torn up and faded, but still served their purpose.
I nodded and looked around for any signs of a village. In the distance, I saw smoke, so I started walking towards it. The walk was very quiet and peaceful. I was almost to the village when I heard a voice coming from behind me, saying, "Halt right there, ash maker, and don't try anything." I slowly turned around and saw a boy about my age with a spear pointed at me.
I took a breath and then introduced myself, "Pardon my appearance; I have been on the run from the Fire Nation for the last few months." He tilted his head slightly. "What do you mean, 'on the run'?" he asked. "I gave my honest opinion and disagreement about the war going on, as well as the many atrocities that have been committed against the people of the other nations."
His eyes widened. "You disagree with the war that was started by your own nation?" he inquired. I nodded and said, "Yes, what has been happening in this war is atrocious and evil. Unfortunately, the military didn't like my 'radical ideas and views' about the war, so they declared me a traitor to the Fire Nation." I continued, "I managed to get a few of my family's scrolls and escape from my home. Unfortunately, I was caught in a storm and crashed a few miles away. I managed to get off the boat before it sank and saw what looked like smoke in the distance, so I made my way to it and then ran into you."
He asked, "What about your family?" I looked down and said, "They were killed in battle almost four years ago, and my grandparents died about a year ago because they got sick, and I couldn't afford medicine." He was shocked to hear this. "Well, I don't trust you yet, but I can't let someone freeze in the snow. So, you can come back to the village." I looked up at him and said, "Thank you for your kindness. I will earn my keep. You have my word." He stuck out his hand and said, "My name is Sokka. What is yours?" I took his hand and shook it, saying, "My name is Zen. It is a pleasure to meet you."
