Chereads / Reincarnated as a Carp: The Evolution System / Chapter 22 - Shadows Beneath the Depths

Chapter 22 - Shadows Beneath the Depths

The Catacombs stretched endlessly before Daniel and Mira, their darkened walls lined with ancient carvings that pulsed faintly, as if alive. Each pulse sent an unsettling vibration through the water, echoing in the silence. The oppressive weight of the Abyss grew heavier with every meter they descended.

Daniel's system chimed with a soft alert:

[Entering Zone: Submerged Catacombs.]

[Threat Level: High.]

[Anomalous Energy Detected.]

"Well, that's comforting," Daniel muttered, glancing at Mira.

Her expression remained grim. "These carvings are ancient warnings. They're meant to keep intruders out."

Daniel inspected the engravings more closely. Jagged symbols spiraled across the walls, weaving into a cryptic story that his system failed to translate fully. Yet the occasional glyph shimmered with recognition: danger, guardians, and sacrifice.

"Warnings or not, we don't have much of a choice," Daniel said, adjusting his position in the water.

Ahead, the tunnel widened into a massive chamber. Pillars of coral and bone spiraled upward, their surfaces etched with glowing runes. At the center, a pedestal held what looked like an orb, swirling with inky shadows.

"Is that…?" Daniel began.

"A fragment," Mira confirmed, her voice tinged with awe and apprehension.

Daniel's system flared to life:

[Artifact Detected: Abyssal Fragment.]

[Potential Unlock: Abyssal Surge – High-Risk Ability.]

Before either of them could act, the water trembled violently. Shadows peeled away from the walls, coalescing into grotesque forms. Their eyes burned with malevolence as they circled Daniel and Mira, their movements eerily synchronized.

[Entity Identified: Abyssal Shades.]

[Quantity: 5.]

[Threat Level: Severe.]

Daniel braced himself. "Looks like they don't want us taking their treasure."

"No one ever does," Mira replied, unsheathing her blade. "Stay sharp."

The first shade lunged without warning, its clawed appendages slicing through the water like black lightning. Daniel narrowly dodged, countering with a Hydro Dash to reposition. He swung his blade, but the shade dissolved into shadow, reforming behind him.

"Physical attacks aren't enough!" Mira shouted, striking another shade with a bioluminescent burst. The creature recoiled, its form flickering briefly before solidifying again.

Daniel gritted his teeth. "Got it."

He activated Ripple Shockwave, sending a burst of energy outward. Two shades were forced back, their forms momentarily destabilized.

[Analysis Complete: Abyssal Shades Vulnerable to Energy-Based Attacks.]

Daniel's system offered a new suggestion:

[Unlock Recommended: Abyssal Surge.]

[Warning: High Energy Cost. Risk of System Overload.]

"Not now," Daniel muttered, focusing instead on coordinating with Mira.

One shade attempted to flank her, but Daniel intercepted it with a Piercing Surge, the blade humming with residual energy. Mira took advantage of the opening, delivering a decisive blow that caused the shade to dissipate entirely.

"Four left," she said, her breathing steady.

The remaining shades grew more aggressive, their movements faster and more coordinated. They wove together, creating a cyclone of shadows that descended on Daniel and Mira.

"Watch out!" Mira called, activating her luminescent aura to create a brief shield.

Daniel's system chimed urgently:

[Critical Threat: Combined Entity Detected.]

The cyclone coalesced into a massive, humanoid shade, its form towering above them. It roared, the sound reverberating like an underwater quake.

[Entity Identified: Abyssal Warden.]

[Threat Level: Critical.]

"Oh, come on!" Daniel groaned.

The Warden struck with blinding speed, forcing the duo to scatter. Its massive claws slammed into the ground, sending shockwaves through the chamber.

"Mira, any ideas?" Daniel shouted, dodging another strike.

"We need to disrupt its core!" she replied. "That orb—it's feeding off it!"

Daniel glanced at the pedestal. The fragment pulsed with dark energy, tethering the Warden to its power.

"Cover me," he said, darting toward the fragment.

Mira nodded, engaging the Warden with a series of quick, precise strikes. Her blade flickered with light, keeping the massive shade's attention on her.

Daniel weaved through the chaos, dodging smaller shades that tried to intercept him. He reached the pedestal and extended a fin toward the fragment.

The moment his touch connected, his system blared:

[Contact Established: Abyssal Fragment.]

[Initiating Synchronization.]

Dark energy surged through Daniel, a cold, alien force invading his body. His vision blurred as the system struggled to stabilize the connection.

[Warning: Synchronization Unstable.]

The Warden roared, turning its full attention to Daniel.

"Daniel, hurry!" Mira shouted, barely holding her ground.

Focusing through the pain, Daniel activated Ripple Shockwave, amplified by the fragment's energy. The resulting blast ripped through the chamber, shattering the Warden's tether and destabilizing its form.

"Now, Mira!" Daniel called.

Mira delivered a final, devastating strike, her blade piercing the Warden's core. The massive shade disintegrated, its particles scattering into the void.

[Combat Concluded: Abyssal Warden Neutralized.]

The chamber fell silent, the oppressive weight lifting slightly.

Daniel collapsed to the seafloor, breathing heavily. The fragment's energy coursed through him, more stable now but still alien.

"You okay?" Mira asked, swimming to his side.

"Define 'okay,'" Daniel replied with a weak smile.

Mira smirked. "You did good. Let's hope Korrath thinks so too."

As they prepared to leave, the carvings along the walls pulsed again, brighter this time. A low, echoing voice resonated through the chamber:

"The Abyss watches. The price has been paid—but the debt remains."

Daniel and Mira exchanged uneasy glances before swimming upward, the weight of the Abyss following them like a shadow.
